Good call. I cleared my 5-year-old Oldhamii clumps to the ground with a reciprocating saw at the end of August. The Oldhamii canes and leaves were badly burnt up from summer with too much direct sun. My other varieties had no issue. Three weeks later I'm seeing 5' - 6' of new growth. More than 50% of the new growth are side shoots from the cut culm. It will take at least a year to fill back out but worth it to reset the clump.

I'm doing the same with my Phyllostachys Makinoi (an elegant running bamboo). Its had a rough summer, and after it dies back, new green leaves grow right next to the dead ones, so they never look lush.

You must leave a few canes for them to regenerate. Usually you keep one one-year old, one two-year old and, if can, one three-year old, like son, father, and grandfather, for the cluster to revive. In Taiwan I found if I chopped all down, the next year I might see small shoots coming out from the bases of the cut canes, then those small shoot eventually died and the whole clump was gone.

Chipping the bamboo will make your chipper blades dull. The silica is not good for chippers.

Many modern chippers are actually hammer mills, they don't require any sharpness. But you are right, I stopped using bamboo cutting boards in the kitchen many yrs ago for same reason.

Update please? Our old hamii got severely sunburnt this summer and turned yellow. 😢Not sure how to handle getting them green again. I’d hate to chop them all down being they are screening the neighbors house for privacy. We have lived in the valley for over 20 years and the summers seem to be getting drier and hotter. Help!!

@@DelightfulDissident no. the new shoots will be tiny. Will take years to recover if they don’t die. It needs big live canes with lush leaves to grow new large culms. Before that it takes a few year to get large culms.
