Imagine building a military career on success and ruthless precision and then get sent on a Black op and your main kit is an EOD suit and a 9mm. Either THEY have much faith in you or THEY want you removed in the most deniable way possible.

Actually something like this happened IRL but without the EOD suit, Three MACVSOG guys went down in a huey after getting lifted out of one LZ and only had one M-79 their combat knives and special Berretta 92-F's with silencers as a means of defense. This 92-F locked the slide so as to make it a one of the only truly suppressed weapons the catch was you had to unlock the slide and rack it to chamber another round than re lock the slide again before firing or you would give away your POS. They had to hump it for almost sixty kilometers back over the border back into Vietnam before another pick up could be arranged, they spent almost six days making the trip and gathered a shit ton of intel on NVA logistics movements and personnel moving down the Ho Chi Mihn trail from Cambodia into Vietnam. If you have ever seen a scene in a movie where a small group of Soldiers hides in the tall grass and an entire battalion walks/runs right through them without seeing them it came from the reports of these three MACVSOG guys in their AAR's which were confirmed by a squad of F-4's

One of my favorite moments occurs while he was doing some solo recon in an area believed to be relatively free of Northern troops. In simple, low-key prose, he describes cresting a hill & spotting maybe a dozen soldiers in a distant meadow below. Believing them friendlies, he waves hello & they reciprocate. He then realizes he's greeting the enemy, who quickly recover from their surprise & open fire. My dad shot a video of my grandpa telling this story in person; he laughs while relating how he dove for cover, which is strange to me because I rarely saw him laugh aloud, especially regarding combat. Retrospectively, I guess, there is a kind of slapstick quality to the encounter -- a friendly exchange of greetings that instantly devolves into mayhem. Anyway, though his account of his escape isn't nearly as dramatic as what you shared, it's similar in that he watched his would-be captors conduct a brief search for him from a culvert filled with weed grass. A moment like that -- seeing the boots of guys who want nothing more than to torture & kill you walk nearly to your hiding place before finally moving off -- must change a man forever.
