At this time of year it was more likely to have been a queen wasp searching out somewhere to start a nest. Hornets are still relatively rare in this country although they are increasing in numbers here due to climate change.

Japanese hornets are not lethal by themselves, but they can give you a nasty sting. They are a real threat to honeybees, and to other "keystone" insect species. With increasingly hot summers in the northern hemisphere, they are showing up all over the place. The have arrived in Canada on Vancouver Island as well as the Lower Mainland, but our Provincial Bee Inspector is quick to keep them in check.
@ggee6730

We don’t have Japanese hornets in the Uk. It was probably just a native hornet. Non aggressive, and endangered. They shouldn’t have killed it.

Unfortunately Hornets get a very bad reputation because they are a large wasp, they are very loud in flight ,& yes they can sting if they or their nests are threatened ! They are also very beautiful ,non aggressive, (unlike common wasps), intelligent ,useful creatures that are becoming rather rare ! They often fly at night & are attracted to light in houses where they may come in through open windows ! I have stood & watched one 'inspect' contents of my study ,(including ME ), pictures on walls seemed to fascinate it most, perhaps it saw its reflection in the glass ? They have encountered me whilst I fish lakes etc , where I watched them hunt insects, amongst the reeds /bushes, which they soon deal with , taking them off to their nest ! I have watched one peel squashed insects from my car windscreen , returning many times as I sat inches away inside ! I note we have many viewers here so may I take this opportunity to perhaps enlighten some please ? Thank you ..

Hello happy couple:-). Guys do you have a video on a check list or what to do / or not to do when buying a canal boat? We are curious as may sell up and buy a canal boat to retire early:-). I know it’s personal and different for many folks. You pending boat budget etc. But are there things to look out for? Ie I know on a car I’d check mot service history etc. And I have basic Engine knowledge like check for head gasket sludge. Oil cleanliness etc etc. Would so appreciate a basic “look out for” video when buying a boat xx much love. Jason and Sarah. Bsk.

We don’t float about pretending to love nature. We do love nature. We do make exceptions for hornets in our home however and safty of everyone on board. If we had left it there would have been no way to know if it had left or not and we wouldn’t have been able to sleep in there without being certain it’s was gone. Everyone one should be mindful of their impact on the natural world and we do a lot to protect it. weather that be litter picking in and around the water, saving bats birds, snails who crawl aboard and even spiders who lodge with us in summer. Hornets are also an invasive species and have been really damaging to bee populations ( which are endangered and a vital part of the eco system) so I guess it’s all a matter of perspective. I think it is also important to be mindful of the words you choose to judge other people. You should share you passion with positivity because calling people names navel changes behavior and weakens your argument
