We are Matariki...Part 1 Kia Ora....Embedded within our beings lies the profound essence of our ancestors-their wisdom, spirit, and dignity. Regardless of the era we emerge in, our Māori identity binds us through the intricate threads of genealogy. In our actions and expressions, we echo the timeless values of Matariki: family, lineage, renewal, and reverence for our forebears. Every day, we bear the genetic legacy of Matariki and her descendants, shaping our journey with their enduring presence.(My use of imagery of books) Storytelling is a paramount practice during Matariki. Through the art of storytelling, the Māori people pass down ancestral knowledge, legends, and wisdom from one generation to the next. This oral tradition ensures the preservation of cultural heritage and promotes a deep understanding of Matariki’s significance. The Role of Storytelling in Matariki“As the stars of Matariki light up the night sky, our stories illuminate our cultural identity, connecting us to our ancestors and guiding us towards the future.” - Aroha Williams, Māori storyteller(Disclosure: The song, ‘Te Ahi Kai Pō’ (which translates to ‘the fire burning in the darkness’), is about the battle site of Te Ranga in 1864, and has lyrics penned by Ria’s friend, Te Ori Paki. Ria says it’s about healing after war, and trying to find your beacon of hope in times of despair.I wanted to use this waiata not only because the music is so powerfully moving, but because we can seek solace, refuge and strength in the guiding principles of our Tupuna and Matariki, when we are fighting our own personal battles.)
