My take was the house wasn’t necessarily evil, it just kept around the souls of everyone who died there. It became an issue when it trapped the soul of a psychopath in Poppy.. (or Polly if you are S & P)
@cherrypitblissАй бұрын
Imo I sort of feel like it was at best neutral (if not evil) based on the show (havent read the novel). SPOILERS: Even if it was kind to Nell before killing her, or that it allowed the Dursleys to die and reunite forever(?), it: -Orchestrated events to not only consume both the Dursleys baby (causing her to be stillborn) and Abigail. That led to their parents accepting death in the house to begin with in order to reunite, which I think means they were planned on being consumed into the house by the house (or possibly the ghosts?) since the beginning. - This show seems to accept that people can exist even after they die. If that is the case, then it is possible there is an afterlife as well. That would mean that Nell has likely been robbed forever of ever reuniting with her husband/soulmate. It also means every remaining family member will have to decide whether or not to return or be separated forever in death. From the look Olivia had at the end (Nell and her dad were busy embracing while she was staring with her gaze fixed on Steve), Im not sure that the house (or Olivia?) is just going to be content with only having 3 of 7 Cranes. Even outside of them what about their SOs and children? How many generations is the house interested in I wonder? Im just not sure how kind it is to manipulate someone into a disastrous ending even if youre sweet to them while you do it (Nell) but I'm also really curious from the books exactly how much influence Poppy has and why the house is the way it is. You might be right that the house is more neutral than anything but I think the director(?) mentions how kind the house decides to be to Nell so it seems like it has some agency over things. Maybe it felt bad for her a bit or it knew giving her what she dreamed of would make her "easier to digest"
@Keeshya6Ай бұрын
I've had a similar view. I felt like it depended on who was "in charge" on the spirits' side. It was Poppy, for so so long. But then Liv takes control during this episode, when she tells Poppy to back off, and when she accepts Hugh's deal. I feel like the house calmed when she became the "matron" of the house, and that's why it's implied that the haunting of the kids has officially come to an end and they're able to live happier lives.
@zimvader25Ай бұрын
@@Keeshya6there is no “in charge” or “control” of the house. Like Steve says in his closing monologue “those who walk there, walk together”. They all have a piece of the house, Poppy just leaves because she’s not really much for confrontation she’s just a manipulative psycho. But they all equally control the house just like Nelly saved her siblings from their mom’s grip.

I mean it's still evil, spirits aren't meant to be trapped in one place like that. We can assume that they can't move on while in that house. That to me is pretty evil
@kuroyuki6254Ай бұрын
It's an interesting theory, but wasn't that the house that was consuming them, driving them mad. Olivia saw Poppy only near the the end, and Poppy definitely accelerated Olivia's insanity, but even without her the house would still slowly consume them, wouldn't it?
@RiggswolfeАй бұрын
I heard that the original ending was going to be much darker. During the scene with Luke and the family gathered around him at the end with his 2 year cake it was going to pan back and you'd see the window from the red room implying they were all still trapped in the house and didn't know it. But Mike Flannagan wisely decided not to end the show that way and to give them all closure.

I like the character detail in the scene at 45:30. As the red door is closing we see Nell just happy to have her dad with her, while Olivia is staring at Steven. She relented and made the deal with Hugh but still wasn't happy about it. Her madness is still there and she still wants all of her children to stay.
@oinxxpinkАй бұрын
Omg yes! I’ve been waiting for someone to point this out. It also mirrors the scene in the last episode when Olivia is saying bye to Hugh and the kids when she was “going to see her sister”. When he goes to kiss her she has her eyes completely open and the expression on her face is so similar to this, just so unhappy. The house made her believe that Hugh was a part of the world that was going to take away her children and hurt them and she will probably always believe that

Something I like about the ending is the fact that all the ghosts show their respect to Steve, while Poppy looks at him in shock and Hazel looks at him proudly. @joe.bananaАй бұрын
did he survive though? Since in the original ending it was revealed that they are still trapped in the house. One thing I find interesting about the narrative is that it's written in such a way that you don't actually have to buy into a supernatural version to explain thing. Early on, they established that the house is old and sections are covered in black mold. One of the primary side effects of black mold exposure is hallucinations. Even back in Episode 1, Steven explains that "sometimes ghosts are bits of regret, lingering emotions" that people carry with them (like Shirley's ghost). Combined with the black mold and heightened emotion, all of this episode could technically be explained by the family experiencing things only after they got back into the mold atmosphere.

28:09 For me this was the crux of this scene. Luke was so on board with reuniting with his mom and then he sees the hat. For Olivia that hat was something he loved that she’s offering him. But she sees him as the child he was and never connects to the idea he grew up (Nell is also portrayed as a child.) For Luke though that hat has been haunting and terrifying him ever since the tall man took it back. It’s traumatizing to see it again. The one time he actually faced it; it wasn’t the tall man, it was Olivia haunting him, trying to get him back. Like she clawed at him from under the grave.

This show was so amazing, you were mad at Luke's family for not believing him, and you "as the audience" didn't believe him either. He told everyone that Abigail was real and no one believed him. It was brilliant writing because it made the audience just as complicit in the downward spiral of Luke's future (his voice doesn't matter). It is a good way to subtly teach us that we should listen to the little children in our lives more. We dismiss so much and chalk it up to children's imagination; but teach them that we don't think, that what they believe or say matters. Then, God forbid, they fall into the streets, addictions, mental challenges - we say "Why didn't you talk to me? We can be so blind to our part in molding their mindsets, doubts, fears, and low self-esteem.

55:38 they were haunted by their future selves because more or less the whole haunted house aspect is meant to be an allegory on how our trauma "haunts us" and causes generational effects that you can't escape from if you don't work through it. Basically their fates were sealed because of family dysfunction. Notice how the family only healed and stopped seeing ghosts after they all became truthful with each other and worked through their relationships.
@ygkemosabi8280Ай бұрын
sure, but also the mom could be the reason for all the hauntings and she made a deal to stop for the dad...
@Bigglesman96Ай бұрын
@ygkemosabi8280 she wasn't the reason, the hauntings effected her as well and started before her death. Each family member had their own unique "ghost" which is meant to represent each of their traumas and dysfunctions . The haunted house is literal but also metaphorical and is meant to symbolize suffocating security. hence "our forever home". the moms specific "ghost" was overprotection of her children and not wanting them to grow and and go out into the world for fear of them experiencing pain and suffering. The dads "ghost" is always "trying to fix everything", he juggles his family's issues and withholds the truth because he believes it will keep them safe, but to their detriment. The rest of the kids ghosts are something like addiction, perfection, promiscuity, and depression.
@Bigglesman96Ай бұрын
@@ygkemosabi8280 so actually you are right in a sense, the show uses a haunted house as a plot device but the metaphorical ghosts of the parents' dysfunction is actually what caused the kids to grow up with their own ghosts following them.

@Bigglesman96Ай бұрын
@@ygkemosabi8280 yes not all of them are haunted by their future selves, I'm saying nell is haunted by her future self and not the other kids because her specific trauma is depression, so her ghost is basically her tendency to suicide. But yes, the show conveys this point by making the kids have "gifts" that lend to what their specific trauma will be later on. But the gifts are "generational" and passed down, like The mom explains. It reflects the concept of generational trauma. The mom IMO wasn't directly the reason they kept seeing ghosts in adulthood, she was just a piece of it. The message conveyed is that all the past people in the house are victims of the collection of traumas that ruin and haunt peoples lives.
@tdog790Ай бұрын
The dad told the ghost mom that ‘if you open that door, I’ll make a promise to you’ so he sacrificed himself by taking all his pills so ghost him can open the door to save his kids. And yes time is non linear in the house and in people that spend time there. That’s why when ghost mom wrote ‘welcome home Nell’ on the wall in the future, but in the past they saw that writing and only peeled off some part of so it read ‘come home nell’ House is basically just a supernatural and haunted place and ghosts inside it can be good or bad .. Polly was def bad because she was literally crazy and in a nut hose and she tricked Olivia to kill herself and used her to bring her kids back and ultimately killing Nell because she was trying to ‘wake her up’ but when the dad joined them now there are 3 Craine family members haunting the house so they are able to stop polly so its not really a threat anymore. And the next one to watch is Midnight Mass for both of you. It’s a great show and in my opinion the 2nd best Mike Flanagan show . And I also love the score of this show and it’s on my Spotify playlist .

Good theory, but human Abigail dies at the tea party on the last night. The kids leave the house forever on this night. Memories sprinkled like confetti is one thing, but once the kids physically leave the house, there's no moment they would ever be at Hill House or the grounds in the presence of ghost Abigail again as children. The fact that she's seen multiple times in a blue dress can be explained by the fact that Mrs. Dudley probably made Abigail's clothes and didn't have many different dresses lined up for her to wear. So she probably wore that blue dress all the time. Luke even asks for clothes from his sister because Abigail doesn't have nice things. Although Abigail died wearing what she was sleeping in, her ghost wears the blue dress. However, I don't think the assumption can be made that anytime we see a blue dress, it's ghost Abigail.

Pretty much, Poppy drove the mom crazy and forced the mom’s hand to self transition, which then sets off this specific timeline; there were other timelines that could’ve taken place. The beauty of this show is that everyone who sees it can decide what they think the meaning behind it is and Nell's speach always gets me crying no matter how many times I watch it and I don't usually cry with that stuff so that just shows how brilliant Mike is when ot comes to pulling on your heartstrings when it's the right time to do so. I beleive in ghosts because I saw them from the age of 5 to 10 so to me they are not just guilt and all that of the person who sees them but also trapped here because of their own guilt or regrets and sometimes just because they can not accept the fact that they are dead which is sad because they become trapped in the place they died not able to move on. I love watching reactions to this show because I love hearing the different takes that people have on it and the way they see things as well. I know you both don't like horror but I suggest you at least check out Mike's movie Doctor Sleep which is the continuation for the Shinning and yes it does have some scenes that are hard to take but all and all it is really well directed and well acted and no his wife Katie aka the actress of Theo isn't in that one. Fall of the house of Usher is the newest tv show, he did and I suggest you check that one out, though just a warning it does get gory at times seeing how it's based off Edger Allan Poe short stories haha but it also deals with family drama like this one and it does have a lot of emotional parts to it as well. If you want a nice thriller that Mike did then check out Hush. That movie was written by him and Katie both and she stars in it as well. You should absolutely watch the rest of Mike Flanagan's shows: Haunting of Bly Manor (will have a similar and familiar tone to Hill House but a different story), Midnight Mass (this one is much different but still produced just as well, also great), The Fall of the House of Usher (this one is probably the odd one out and is probably the most poetic and artsy of them, but also great). If you ask people what's their favorite, you will get every answer between these four (there's also Midnight Club, but I've heard it's not as good and I haven't seen it), but for what it's worth, here are my rankings: #1 Hill House (don't get me wrong, the rest of the shows are also masterpieces, but maybe because I saw Hill House first it was just such a gut punch that I loved it) #2 Midnight Mass (it's actually very hard to decide between this one and Usher one, but I think Midnight Mass has a better story) #3 The Fall of the House of Usher (I actually think the story at its core is pretty simple and straightforward, so what's holding this show up for me is everything else - the dialogue, monologues, directing, acting, editing, cinematography...) #4 Bly Manor (I hate that I have to put ANY of them in last place because they're ALL masterpieces, so don't take this as a "Bly Manor lost" statement and more of a "they're all winners, and the other 3 just edged it out slightly to the top").

@@comeatmebro8120YES! Bly mabor doesn't suit spartan and pudgey, waaaaayyyy too gothic and romantic. They like more action and mystery, midnight mass is GREAT!

@@Marina-cq2yt But they love to theory craft and Bly is great for that. If the timeline for HH sent them spiralling they’d have fun with Bly. MM is great and they should get to that as well eventually.

I was so looking forward to you finding out about abigail, cause for some reason you both were absolutely convinced she was a ghost😂

The viewers are supposed to think Abigail is a ghost. This is deliberate by the show. Most first time viewers think this.

This series is weirdly haunting, when I first saw it I was thinking it is a masterpiee of sorts, but months and years afterwards I think of it now and then and realize how amazing it really was It was just so heartbreaking to see their father as this man who didn't seem to care much and staying away but he truly loved them so much, it is true that true heroes stay invisible I had pretty much the exact thoughts as Sparrtan about this movie, and also about the thought of watching Bly Manor or not since it isn't really a sequal Haunting of Bly Manor next 🙂 Oh and there are several adapations of this story, "The haunting" but this gangs version is by far the most daunting to me in question of real/unreal and the human aspect

Great reactions to a great show. I hope that you eventually watch Mike Flanagan's other work. Midnight Mass and The Fall of the House of Usher were my other favorites.

You should do a follow up video. There are plenty of videos detailing all the hidden ghosts that appeared in the episodes.

The Haunting of Bly Manor is next, it's a lot like Hill House but it's less scary and a lot of people don't like it as much, but i think you guys would enjoy it for what it offers. After that is Midnight Mass, which is my personal favourite and a big departure from the vibes that Hill House and Bly Manor have, but it's a lot slower and more dialogue heavy so i'm not sure if you guys would like it. Then it's The Fall of the House of Usher, which isn't scary at all and leans more unsettling in my opinion; it's VERY different from all the rest it's a lot more fun and theatrical if that's your vibe, and it's based entirely on the works of Edgar Allen Poe. There is also The Midnight Club but a lot of people rank it the lowest of all the Flanaverse shows, and it was also supposed to have a second season that got cancelled so the story isn't technically finished.
@jhornacekАй бұрын
Poppy is the only evil ghost here - all of the rest are either helpful or just living their best ghost lives: - Hazel tries to help Olivia by telling her that Poppy is lying to her. - William just wants his hat back. - The basement ghost puts Luke back into the dumbwaiter (ripping his shirt) and presses the button to send him back upstairs. - The Bent Neck Lady is just witnessing moments from Nell's life (and trying to warn her). Poppy was insane in life so she became an insane ghost. Same with Olivia - Poppy drove her insane so she became an insane ghost. And the house isn't evil - it's just a place where if you die there you become a ghost. We're told by characters that the Red Room is digesting the Cranes while they're in it, but we never see any proof of this, or signs that it's damaging them when they spend time in it (and don't know they're in the Red Room).

Haunting of Bly Mannor is kind of season 2 of this Haunting 'series' but it is a stand alone story. Then Mike Flannigan created Midnight Mass which is fantastic, Midnight Club which is good, but not as good as the others and The Fall of the House of Usher, which is fantastic as well. Mike Flannigan did an amazing job with all of the shows, but they are all standalone stories, MF just likes to use the same actors. Also, he is married to Kate Siegel (adult Theo).

Spartan - The song you were enjoying is "If I go, I'm goin" by Gregory Alan Isakov off his album This Empty Northern Hemisphere. He's honestly my favorite singer-songwriter currently active and I can't recommend him enough. I recommend "Idaho" and "Sweet Heat Lightning" as well as good intros to his style and music.

Abigail died the last day, she was a living human every appearance before that. It would make no sense for her to have been a ghost. The house was never after the kids, Olivia was. Olivia was the one beckoning them there, and Hugh stopped her by staying. Also, Poppy was just a psychopath...she was happy to drive anyone crazy if she could. It's scattered, but the show implies she drove her husband mad and that's why he buried himself in the walls. And my theory for Nell is the concept that we all see our lives flash before our eyes at the moment of death. Unfortunately, for Nell, her being in the house woke a sensitivity in her (or she always had it), so she could see ghosts. And when dead Nell flashed through her life, she literally did (what with time being all wibbly wobbly), and living Nell saw the flashing Nell, leading to a lifetime of trauma. The storm episode showed that we didn't see every instance Bent-Neck Nell saw Living Nell, so she likely dealt with the trauma even more than was shown throughout her entire life.

I've seen numerous people react to this show at this point, and I always find it so entertaining how absolutely everyone just assumes Abigail is a ghost from the moment they see her, even though she never does anything weird apart from not being seen by the other kids. You should absolutely check out the 1963 Robert Wise film The Haunting, which is a pretty faithful adaptation of the original novel, just to see what was new and what was part of the original story.

The original ending that Flanagan considered was that at the very end we see all the kids still in the Red Room. The happy ending scenes you saw werent real. They all died there. Flanagan reconsidered and said it would be too cruel for the audience.

I'm glad - and also not surprised - you guys loved it and that it has been a transformative experience! :) Here's a list of Mike Flanagan's other stuff that are the most appreciated ones, in order of their release and with a note that I try to make as objective as can be, where I have something to add. NO SPOILERS HERE. Basically everyone agrees that all these are reaaallly really good, but also most agree that nothing really hits the levels of Hill House. So, just adjust your expectations! :) - Hush - less of a philosophical piece, more of a thriller. This is where his style first started to develop, but it's still not really comparable to Hill House. - (Hill House) - Doctor Sleep (movie) - somewhat of a blend between soft horror, thriller and fantasy, it's pretty unique with some great acting performances, not that much philosophical - and it doesn't have to be, but definitely very entertaining - The Haunting of Bly Manor - the most similar to Hill House. It's a different story but with similar themes, setting and heart. I'd say it's less depressing. Personally, my favourite of the remaining ones. - Midnight Mass - People either love it more than the previous or less, there's a weird competition between the two, this one definitely has the best acting and most technical prowess out of the two. it's a compelling story, but the story itself is not ground breaking, the human elements are though. - The Mighnight Club - Has nothing to do with the previous one, and is generally the lowest rated. It is STILL well above the average "good horror" though and while I don't remember much of it, I'm willing to bet it's underrated. I don't think this one is deep, but it was completely entertaining and doesn't rely on jump scares either. - The Fall of the House of Usher - What do I say about this one.... This makes you feel the full spectrum of emotions. It's a mash of all the others in a really good way, but as intended, you will hate parts of it! Has some of the strongest acting out of all of them, and I'd consider this one to be the closest to poetry. It has to be appreciated as art, because it is actually based on art. Namely Edgar Allan Poe's writings, with a lot of symbolism. Quite a good story too - even on the surface. It isn't very "intense" though as far as emotions go, but is a slow gearing up, with very clever horror elements.

In order my favorites that I've seen are Hill, Usher, Bly and Mass. Hill and Usher are both so well done it was difficult for me to choose which was top but Hill wins out because it has the most re-watchability (I've probably seen it about 20 times through now) and I cry every..single..time. I am most invested in the characters of this show and the story is just so beautiful it had to take the #1 spot. But Usher is definitely a VERY close second for me.

I would say watch the haunting of bly manor just cause i feel like it's a good companion series to this one (obviously lol) but midnight mass is amazing. It's a close second behind hill house for me! You have to react to the second series, The Haunting of Bly Manor, at some point. I still haven't decided which is the better series because they are both so good. Being an anthology series, most of the actors from Hill House are in Bly Manor which makes it even better.
