You called Jayce's flaw perfectly - he does tend to follow the last person who has his ear. Maybe with experience he'll find his own center? Over the last couple of years those of us who have been steeping ourselves in international events have had to learn a lot about escalation ladders, and this episode presents the idea perfectly in Mel's case. The danger of escalation isn't just tit-for-tat escalation between sides pushing each to climb the ladder but the normalization of the current rung of escalation on a given side setting the stage for further escalation. Ambessa's line "weapons can't be unmade and they are always used" becomes a reality check for Mel letting her see how far she's let the escalation pull her away from her values so she can re-center herself and de-escalate. Also, I love that although Ambessa is evil, history supports her assertion about killing one nucleus for rebellion vs having to kill thousands - but the evil is that the choice is only necessary because violent imperialism is their family business. And I love the very simple so effective visual storytelling of the blasted throne room - yikes. A big part of the genius of the show is that most characters aren't good or bad just human and fallible, and thus able to be either the "good guy" or the "bad guy" in any given moment. Like Vi becoming arguably a bad guy in the latter part of the episode. Nobody is ready for any episode, but especially not the finale.

I think that's rather a surface reading of Jayce. When he's presented issues he has to decide on, he often gets two conflicting sets of opinions thrown at him - by choosing one of them, he's often criticized by viewers as not having his own agency - this would be their complaint whichever choice he made, which is a sort of catch-22 criticism. Additionally, he often modifies the explicit wishes of one of the sets of advice given him, and the most important decisions he makes aren't due to anyone's advice, imo.
@j.f.fisher5318
@j.f.fisher5318 Жыл бұрын
@@Hohum37 to me it isn't a criticism. He has no experience in this stuff and wasn't even sufficiently interested in history to be aware of whether military history is taught in the academy. It's just not his thing. By contrast Mel is obviously steeped politics at an early age, she wouldn't have just thought up all that "kind fat face" stuff that probably a combination of intense personal study, tutoring, and family discussion backed by observations of political interactions since even earlier childhood. And suddenly Jake is thrust into the center of Piltover politics. What's he going to do? He's in a situation and someone says something and he sees how that genuinely applies and goes with it. Ambessa for example isn't _wrong_ but she's right for someone who does violent imperialism for their family business. But eventually after he's gotten some experience maybe he'll have better options. ("with respect...")
@Hohum37
@Hohum37 Жыл бұрын
@@j.f.fisher5318 I was advocating a deeper examination of each choice he makes, rather than bridling at Jayce being criticised. On closer inspection I think you'll see that he doesn't often follow the last person who had his ear, he usually modifies his actions between the options given - and I restate: The biggest decisions he ever makes come from his own mind. His flaw, I think, is much like Caitlyn's - naivety, yet both have a willingness to learn and adapt to new information. An example. In the theater scene, Mel encourages Jayce to make what seems like possibly illegal deals (although even this isn't directly suggested - it's possibly Arcane writers letting tropes misguide the audience). Jayce offers a partnership - early access to new inventions in return for investment. That just seems like a business deal. Even Mel is surprised. To me, that seems like navigating the world of politics, which he necessarily has to do as a Councillor, without too much compromise. However, the simple reading of it is that Jayce just did what Mel said.

@@Hohum37 Jayce often changes his mind. He doesnt have strong convictions regarding what politics to persue. Those are qualities that are heavily looked down upon in politicians. Most people hate politicians who go back on their words and frequently change positions. So of course people see him as deeply flawed. I on the other hand disagree. I think he is the exact right kind of person to be in charge. Him changing his politics multiple times is a sign of great integrity. He knows that he has much to learn, and he is willing to change his views based on new information. He is not concerned with pretending he knows what he is doing. He is not concerned with appearing smart and avoiding mistakes. He tries different things that do not work out the way he envisioned them. Jayce is an ambitious and skilled scientist. And he believes in the scientific method and empiricism. He applies that to politics instead of following a given ideology. If more politicians would update their views based on reality, the world would be vastly better.

In regards to the council scene: Vi says that you can't negotiate with Silco but I believe nobody has really tried. In episode three he says - and I quote - "It's a little crude, I'll admit. The base violence necessary for change. But we both know topside won't listen to anything else.". I assume this means they (that is: the underground) have tried negotiations before but were brushed off and had enforces sent down to quell any sort of uprising. Can we really blame him for fighting for the freedom of his people when nobody seems to listen to them when they try to talk? I think when Vi says that you can't negotiate with him, it's mostly coming from a place of anger. She wants to punish him for what he did to her, to her family and to Powder. Now that doesn't mean all his actions are justified, especially considering how much he harms the people he claims to try and free, but I really think that they could easily come to an agreement if they actually tried and talked for once rather than just sending down their enforces.

This is one of the many ironies presented in the show. The reversals of the positions you expect people to take in that meeting are so well written - they are both surprising, yet completely based on their motivations / lack of knowledge. Ref Vi wanting to take out Silco. Yes, because she hates what he did - but he needs to be taken out before she (in her mind) rescues her sister - if that's done the other way around, they'd both be on the run from the most powerful force in the undercity.

Agreed. Vi is letting her own hatred for Silco colour her perceptions. Silco wants a negotiated settlement, his militancy was designed to bring Piltover to the table. As he told Vander, he doesn't need to win, he just needs to scare them. But that wouldn't help Vi.

Vi's point is hardly about the war though. She's just picking the path with greater chances of taking Silco down to get Powder back. Just like Jayce was pushing the idea of progress while that was just a side motivation for him at the moment compared to saving Viktor, Vi siding with the war now isn't really about the war at the moment. I know it's uncommon for a TV show to be faithful to its character motivations as they often jeopardize them in order to get the plot moving forward but this isn't that kind of show. It favors the characters over the plot, which I love, so you have to get used to that way of thinking. Just nitpicking though, you're catching up on a lot of complex themes in the show and coming up with good theories and I love your reactions to the show.

Good reaction. However, i have to add something. First of all, Sevika is great, i didn't like her at first, but after the third or fourth rewatch she is one of my favorite. Second, Silco is not the wolf, he doesn't want any war, he said it in episode 3, talking to Vander. Third, Victor doesn't have any addiction to shimmer, but his goal was to rapair his body, lungs, not the leg. So he just needed to repeat the process. Fourth, factory battle scene is great, but it is sad, that people care more about death of one boy, while there was a real bloodbath, dozens of enforcers from both sides were slaughtered. People who also had lifes.

I agree. Silco is a fox, he actually is an "industrialist" raising funds through both legitimate and underhanded business dealings to enrich the under-city and building shimmer soldiers to project "power" and "scare" the topsiders. The "kids" working for him are not "forced" to work, rather most have no options in the under-city other than working in the mines or other opportunistic enterprises ran by companies from Piltover. The kid who died released the shimmer guards that "killed" enforcers, both are just doing their jobs - they needlessly died because Vi and Jayce couldn't see beyond their fist and hammer to envision a diplomatic solution. Also, Silco never wavered in his goal for a nation of Zaun, but Vi changed from hating Piltover to working with them.

There is a very VERY good video about Arcane cinematography analisis in which it is explained that Viktor is running "counter-clockwise", or towards the opposite way of how western culture expresses moving forward, as he is involuting instead of evolving, and his scream seems to be filled with despair instead of joy. That long drawn-out fall of the child after being shot by Jayce was just for dramatic effect. IMO in the beginning of the series Vi had a deep-seated hatred for the Enforcers and Piltover in general because of how they treated anybody from the undercity, then after learning about Silco and that he "had" her sister, her sole purpose was to take down Silco and get "Powder" back.

As a cinephile the transition at the start from the neckless in the blood fading into sort of abstract out of focus then Mel sitting up in bed awoken by the nightmare/explosion and realizing it is one of her paintings is the best I've seen. Better than Lean's struck match into rising sun, better than Kubrick's tossed bone to space station... It isn't just cool AF, it tells you so much about Mel's character and her arc to that point. I cannot think of a better-done transition in film or TV. Side note: when Finn tells Sevika "There's bigger fish than Silco" notice it cuts to Mel's mom arriving. In cinema language this is foreshadowing that Mel's mom is the bigger fish. Notice when she talks to Mel how she already knows Jayce may be working on hextec weapons and 'problems festering in the Under City'. Watch, whether Mel lives or dies her mom will be a much bigger character in season 2.

I agree. It's fine to think about good and bad, just not as a completely binary choice. It's a spectrum - some characters are very close to the good end, some the bad - some waver up and down the scale. Discussing quite where each character is on that spectrum can be very interesting - especially whether the changes are actually to the characters, or to our perceptions of them because of new information.

Vi is upset by the Council wanting to negotiate because she knows what that means for Undercity. They wouldn't be saving any lives, they'd just be washing their own hands of having to deal with the mess Piltover itself created. Silco's a monster that has conducted lethal human experimentation on his own people, created and used child soldiers as disposable muscle, used child labor in his drug factories (which convieniently double as human shields if raided by enforcers) and he's beaten an addict to death just to make himself feel better, he's gaslit and abused Powder, he's willfully flooded the streets of Undercity with a horrifically destructive supermeth just to gain power and control and he's deliberately put the Chembarons in charge who themselves brutalize the people of Undercity for their own profit. Aside from Sevika none of his people even seem to care about the "revolution" he allegedly wants. Negotiating with Silco just ends with Topside getting a deal to continue benefiting from "Zaun" through cheap labor without getting their hands dirty, meanwhile turning a blind eye to all the horrors and suffering Silco has propagated there.

Note the scene when Victor starts running - in the background there is a huge ship in the distance and as he runs, he starts to outpace it. This ties back to the scene of his as a kid where his little boat gets away from him and he can’t run fast enough to keep up with it. Details and callbacks like this are what make this show S-tier. Also, note the kids that are looking at Jayce after the fight in the factory. Think about how they saw it - the lead councilor, the “Champion of Progress” just shows up out of nowhere at their job with an army and just starts wrecking everything. Killing guards (probably their fathers and brothers), killing their friend, and then just walks out. Yeah - there is nuance to it all, but they don’t see it. They are now so radicalized against the upper city it’s not even funny. This show hits so hard because of how succinctly it depicts the complex real world issues happening today and how it’s so hard to navigate the world when nothing is good or bad, just shades of grey all the time. Heroes with deep flaws, villains with understandable motives, all grey everywhere.
@Hohum37
@Hohum37 Жыл бұрын
There is a smaller ship infront of the larger one that even more resembles his toy. Regarding grey - people also fall into the trap of thinking of all grey being the same shade. There is a tendency to go from the absurd simplification of good/bad being a binary choice, to an even more simple idea that everything is grey and the same.

I think that literally undercity needs to be represented in the council, that's the only true solution. First, a trusted individual, then a democratically elected councillor, with a commitment to extend council seats to have equal representation of zaun and piltover over the course of 50 years. And IMMEDIATE action to make Zaun first more safe, then more prosperous, then more free. Safety and prosperity is going to be step 1 with the trusted Zaunite, free and fair will come afterwards with the democratically elected councillor.

Vi is mostly right because she knows that the concessions the council is willing to make are not enough to satisfy SIlco. If you've seen Ep 9, you know that Vi is underestimating someone a bit in that regard but it's not really her fault, her entire life the council has been exactly like she assumes they are: Politicians who don't care and are only willing to give up the most miniscule amount of power to resolve the situation which sure as hell isn't enough to satisfy Silco. Plus if Vi hadn't done what she does later in the episode, even the person she underestimates wouldn't have done what they did next episode either, so Vi still made this possible. That being said, in theory Mel is right too, there is a diplomatic solution and it is better than attacking SIlco, it's just that Vi doesn't believe the council is willing to pay the price it would cost to pursue it, and she's right. As of yet, the council is not ready to pay that price so negotiations are doomed to fail. Of course there's also the factor that Vi's motives aren't pure, she is gunning for Silco specifically rather than trying to prevent war (although right now she sees no distinction between helping the Undercity and getting rid of Silco so it's not like her arguments are fake), but I'd like to believe that if the council had said "we'll give him everything he wants as long as he stops making shimmer or drown the undercity under destructive drugs" she would have been horribly conflicted about it. She's gonna try and save Powder no matter what, but the way she would do it might be different if she thought that how she's planning to do it would clash with the best future for the Undercity.

interesting perspective. Ok, I'll give Vi a wee bit more credit in that scene. ;)
