Good to hear, learning a trade early helps a lot in the long run. My tip is that you could think about starting with tin soldering, that will give you the feel for how hot metals behave without too much trouble. Small electronics projects are a good start. Understanding parents helps a lot too. Look for pin hole project, not surface mount projects. Search for "Soldering Tutorial for Beginners: Five Easy Steps", there's a 4 minute video with that name. And if you drop the soldering iron - don't try to catch it before it hits the floor, wait until it's on the floor. Setting up a good workstation helps a lot too since you will leave a few burn marks. Just step up from there, soldering copper pipes, brazing, welding - all comes in handy later in life. You don't have to be a master, just good enough to make a good job. And don't scare your teachers with weird contraptions.

Obsolescence is definitely not a stranger to us in the fire alarm field. We have a customer who has an old faraday system. The system is so old that even the brand is obsolete. The brand was absorbed by Cerberus pyrotronics which is now branded under the Siemens name. We had to bill the customer over $2000 for a smoke detector change because the compatible detectors are so rare that nobody but eBay sellers have them and even that is a stretch. We have told the customer time and time again to upgrade the system to a brand new Edwards EST iO64 which supports a very economical and cost effective upgrade and gives access to the latest technology which would make any future repairs easy and more affordable for the customer long term. This particular customer never likes to do any major work until things break completely.

Thats effectively what happened at my old job I was maintenance there and we started to have some major issues with an old notifier panel from around 2004. IIRC the panel stopped outputting the correct voltage to the chain and went into trouble. Well the big boss didn't want to spend the money... that is until it started to false. So they got someone out to replace the panel and lo behold it didn't fix squat because it blew up some detectors with erratic voltage. Its not like they didn't need to be replaced anyway.... they were so dirty from metallic dust that when I welded (indoors in a very large area) the counts on the detector never moved. Well long story short the FD started to warn us about it not working and said it needed to be fixed or red tag. Big boss didn't want to spend the money. So I exited the company before shit hit the fan, and it did shortly thereafter I heard. Boss knows best 🙄

Out of curiosity, why does the system need to have the original devices? I'm not a technician, but my understanding has always been that most devices can be used on most systems without a problem.

@@lackedpuppet9022 Because money. You can't go "Aww, your system is more than 6 months old, I guess we're going to need to replace the entire thing!" if you have universally interchangeable parts like that.

@@uzlonewolf Not sure if you're replying to the right person. _I'm_ the one asking why _he's_ recommending replacing the whole system. @petermichaelgreen
@petermichaelgreen 25 күн бұрын
@@lackedpuppet9022 My understanding is that basic fire alarms use simple electrical interfaces, allowing easy mixing of brands but are quite limited in what they can do. Detectors are grouped into relatively large "zones" and someone would have to manually search the area to detemine which detector was the source of the alarm. So addressable systems came in, which could give each detector it's own "zone", without having to wire each one back to the panel seperately. Unfortunately it seems that many of the protocols are vendor-specific, and even the so-called "open protocols" only seem to be shared among a limited set of manufacturers. So if you back the wrong horse when selecting an addressable fire alarm system you can be SOL.

I imagine if it's 20°f hotter your liquid will just be 20° hotter as well as discharge. The CTOA or SEER should stay the same. ... but I could be wrong 😆

And now next year will be R454B units, or R32 in the case of Daiken! No more R410A units starting Jan 1, 2025. And the new units will have some kind of flammable vapor sensor which we all know will be super reliable right? So then on top of all the other causes, will get no heat or no cooling calls because of a faulty refrigerant leak sensor. Great.

Look like math are overcomplicated to really know, maybe someone will throw "AI" to tell (Even if it can be evaluate for ages) To know for sure if it is, you would have to know a lots of things like -the energy cost of the kw of heat that end into the building for each energy source including the subscription fees or increase of the fees if you already have gas for other use (easy for gas burner as you only need the price of gas and burner efficiency , harder the heat pump as the coefficient of performance is not constant as 1kw of electricity will give you 4 kw of heat with an outside temp of 10°C but only 2 at -15 so need to know the temperature profile of the place) -The cost of the devices that produce the energy, note that the sizing for cooling and heating may be higher than cooling only due to the loss of performances at lower temperature. Reversibility is more than a reverse valve as you have to redesign the condenser side to be able to act as an evaporator that will have to deal with water condensate to evacuate in freezing whether. Only then you may be able to tell. Maybe in the future you'll see "optimizer" for heat/cool popping out to use the cheapest heat source in a unit with gas and reversion valves but when you see how they are used today for the management of fresh air, even if they exist they will surely be bypassed. It's always a nightmare to explain why it's cheaper even if counter-intuitive to take outside air at 30 (but 10% wet ) and cool it to 20 instead of cooling return inside air at 25 (but 95% wet). And voila.
@tschuuuls486
@tschuuuls486 26 күн бұрын
No it's not. It's also pretty weird not to use modern inverter technology when power is expensive and the building is badly insulated. But in corporate America sale price is king, no matter the future costs. And as you probably can attest Mitsubishi Heavy and Daikin for example can build inverter drives that are reliable, but why bother when the customer doesn't demand efficiency.
@lapub.

@@tschuuuls486 Talking about efficiency, I work once to install cooling in a shop that was heater by resistive heating, I talk about the option to add reversibility in order to use the unit to heat , explaining the option would repay for itself the first year, and as they already have electric heating, the backup was already here to cover the few very low outside temp so we keep the cooling sizing. The reply was "I'm the main office in charge of investment, I'm not concern by the shop bill it's not my problem, If I would I could even demolish the whole shop and build one new it will repay itself in one year too" so stupid.

Carrier at least did improve the condensation problems that the heat exchanger would experience in the summer time. Between the old Carrier RTU system and the new Carrier RTU the inducer motor now runs in the summertime when the AC is on. This helps keep the inside of the heat exchanger dry and rust free at the expense of reducing the lifespan of the inducer motor (which is pennies compared to replacing the entire RTU).

@@HVACRVIDEOS Trane 15 ton units use a traditional blower, belt drive motor, but they have a special blower motor and some kind of VFD with DC control voltage, kind of like that Carrier unit, but it looks like a VFD controlling the motor. I didn't look too closely at it, it was a no heat call that turned out to be kind of frustrating, but not too hard of a fix overall. This unit was barely over 1 year old. I can see a major design flaw in them. They supply the combustion air from inside the compressor compartment. Which is a dumb idea, because all summer long, especially if the condenser coil gets even a little dirty, if both condenser fans are running, that whole compressor compartment gets into a negative static pressure. Which then pulls air in thru the exhaust, thru the heat exchanger, back out thru the burners. What happened with that unit was the squirrel cage of the draft inducer was just slightly dirty. But it was only pulling a vacuum of -.86 inches WC. The pressure switch is looking for -1.25. Board had a pressure switch fault code. I pulled out the draft inducer, washed it out in their kitchen sink, and then it improved to -1.60 inches! Wasn't even very much dust in it, turned the water black for a minute that was about it. But to have only run for 1 cooling season, and need to remove several panels, and at least 30 screws to get access to the draft inducer was a PITA. The unit isn't even in a dirty area. Brain dead engineering at it's finest. Only takes a small amount of dust to stop a Trane!

So correct me if im wrong. Looks like 2100 CFM you can bring the static up a bit along with the VDC. Am i reading that chart wrong. Its been a long time since I've messed with one of those units with the axial fan. When those came out in 2019.....they had all kinds of issues with the high temp limit. Carrier corrected it with an auto reset....it only took them 1.5 years to get it fully corrected. I hope it doesn't sound like im dogging you, because thats definitely not my intention ...im genuinely curious if i read that airflow chart correctly ** IF THE CUSTOMER WONT LET YOU DO ANY REAL DUCT MODIFICATIONS.....THIS IS WHERE A RAWAL DEVICE WOULD REALLY SHINE. First off I don’t know how accurate the chart is, I’ve also never seen a unit work accurately according to the chart. The duct work is always messed up on 100% of the units I have in operation. I believe your logic to be correct but I don’t want to increase the speed any higher because I don’t want the static any higher so we are obviously running low airflow however according to measurequick the airflow is pretty good and the general operation of the unit is good also so yeah , also you know I would never take offense to anything you’ve said

I wonder who actually makes these units for both of these companies? I often joke that “ICP is just Carrier from a parallel universe, change my mind…” 😂

@ I actually just looked it up earlier, ICP is is subsidiary of Carrier, and Carrier is owned by a company called UTC I think. Up until about 1998 ICP and Carrier were two completely unrelated entities, until Carrier acquired ICP in 1999; which explains why the vast majority of ICP (and all of it’s other brands) units are virtually exact Carrier copies. Another fun fact, before ICP stood for International Comfort Products, it stood for Inter-City Products before Carrier/UTC took them over. It get’s even more confusing than that though. In my area, we get all our OEM Carrier stuff from Sigler, but won’t quote parts for any ICP product despite being the exact same damn thing with the same parts and owned by the same company. For ICP I have to go through United, but they won’t do Carrier parts. It’s so dumb. 🤣

As in why did I replace it with a 410a unit vs waiting 5 months for a new unit with the new refrigerant? Simply put the customer needed the unit replaced asap they couldn’t wait for the new equipment to come out
