The anime cuts early. In the books, prince douchebag's forces improve their tactics (sabotage, guerilla warfare, assassinations, etc.) Leading to a full on split in the empire, most of the nonhumans siding with the princess and the JSDF versus the humans with the prince for some years. The manga and anime are completely different when it came to the portrayal of the viseral horrors of Modern vs Medivel. Where the manga portrayed the gore, violence and inhuman sides of the Gate series in realistic fashions, the anime went completely PG-13 and took out all of that and even shying away from showing blood, for better or for worse.
