Eastern Germany was specifically made to prosper by the USSR to show people from the west communism brings prosperity to the people. Every other country in the soviet block was spending it's own rescources both for upkeep of the USSR but also to keep GDR comparable to FRG.

It's always weird to me why the communists countries during the cold war had their own uniforms compared to the western aligned nations who just wore US gear. East Germany looked more german that West Germany and even used the next stalhelm after ww2, North Korea looking pretty cool imo compared to South Korea's ww2 US gear, even during the vietnam war the NVA had their own unifrom.
