that's the problem with these corporations becoming so big. tens of millions of people could stop buying from Amazon. well they still have hundreds of millions more than that continue to use it and it keeps them profitable and growing even bigger. It takes a larger percentage of people to agree that they're harmful to make an impact. and it's nearly impossible to get even a small group of people to agree on anything, much less stick to it. I've tried to stop buying from Amazon for a number of years now, I've certainly reduced how much money I give them, but it's hard to eliminate it completely.

Unfortunately, *their* weapons have gotten so much better than ours. Back in the French revolution, if a mob was large enough, it could realistically overwhelm a government position if it had enough rifles, even without support from the army. Cannons and grapeshot and the like were deadly, but it was nowhere near enough to massacre thousands, tens of thousands in hours. Today, they have F-35s and machine-guns and grenade launchers and long range artillery, which were made to obliterate hordes of infantry (grenade launchers were litteraly invented during the Korean war to counter Chinese swarm tactics). This is equipment too complicated for civilians to use/produce, which means for any rebellion to succeed, the army (or at least a large enough portoion of it) has to turn against the regime. At best, there's a pretty bloody coup, at worst, a years long civil war (which is what happened historically in The French Revolution; the Vendée campaign yo crush royalists elements in that region was brutal). TLDR: If the army is on the side of the elite, the people are fucked. If the army fully turns against the elite, there will be a coup, anything after that depends on whos leading the coup and their motivations. If the army splits roughly evenly: Civil War

A lot of my current frustration is that this current oligarchy produces NOTHING. The Gilded Age robber barons were involved in resource extraction, manufacturing, logistics, and many assorted other things that were actually useful to the American economy, though it must be noted that this came with massive human and environmental costs that were horrific to say the least. This current group of oligarches are: private equity that buys up assets and businesses with the express goal of stripping them for parts and cashing out, venture capital that pump stock prices with useless ventures with the express goal of cashing out, and tech companies that consume vast amounts of computing resources, skilled labor, energy, and clean water to make GARBAGE.

Nodded my head in furious agreement until Matt's final analogy on housing. I've worked on this issue from the policy side and the reality is the only people who build housing are developers (be they large, medium or small), even on government-funded projects. And many of our most expensive metro areas (I live in Boston) have horrid zoning that slows housing development to a trickle. So, cracking open the zoning for developers to put up more housing (ideally multi-family) where you need it is Plan A for closing the massive supply-demand gap. Government investment is important too, but in the best case scenario it might be able to cover 10% of the needed supply. Fortunately, there is a market incentive to build housing in high demand urban areas. That tends to address the top of the market first, where developers can make the most money, though there's ways to zone around that (e.g. limiting unit size, setting higher inclusionary housing standards or eliminating parking requirements). The key is that we need to be tackling 5-10% of the latent demand in any given year, which would reduce demand and normalize prices, as opposed to 1-2%, which fails to meet growing demand. We need hyperactive housing development.

They're not all the same. Tim Cook for instance donated personally, not via Apple. Likely (and absolutely) to buy favor for Apple, but the WHY is very important. Not to enrich himself nor take over all the world's communication like Musk and Zuckershite, but rather simply to protect Apple from careening off a cliff due to Trump's issues with China. That protects thousands of Apple jobs, and Apple shareholders - you, me, moms, pops, pension plans, etc. I'm sure it was a tough decision for Cook, but it's painfully obvious that Trump is running a Pay to Play racket.

The device used as the camera sensor is a very small percentage of the cost of the movie though, even a top tier RED cine camera is maybe a couple hundred grand which is still pretty close to nothing when you're talking about a budget of 75 million dollars. What matters is what you're doing with it, including who is driving it, how good the director is, planning, editing, etc, that's both where most of the quality comes from and where most of the expense comes from. None of that fits with "just" having your personal assistant film you with an iPhone.
