@Adrian Ciurea dude, but it's literally true that trans and black people face workplace discrimination. Maybe some of them are incompetent so are white and cishetero people, we should see about the same treatment for those groups, but it turns out that trans and black people have it a lot harder. Like there's literally been studies on how people are less likely to hire someone who has a "black name", even if the rest of their application form is the same. And the same can be said for trans people who still haven't completely transitioned

i think this is actually a very typical german answer. A well informed, and well reflected answer. Just about what i would say. Here in the US companies discourage discussing of salaries for obvious reasons, but a reasonable ballpark number discussion outside of work seems reasonable to me. in my field you either make less than a 100 grand a year, or more than 100 grand a year. Sales jobs are often well over 200 grand, but also a high risk job.

@@kushberlin you know on the one hand it can help to talk with each other to understand differences in salaries. E.g. women get paid less on average. but on the other hand, in my view, Germans tend to believe in equality everywhere while in reality, nobody is the same. Some people are better at what they do than others etc. now most people just see themselves and do not necessarily understand that someone can earn more... and thus, you avoid by trying to not let anyone know. (From the employer's perspective).

The subject is somewhat of a taboo in Belgium too. Also, most people (even friends, not strangers on the street) raise an eyebrow when you ask about the price of a house they've just purchased. Fortunately, they are direct enough to tell you that they don't do that here (talk about money or house prices), when you're a foreigner. Coming from Romania, house pricing was just a small talk subject :). I could, however, understand that it's not a subject Belgians like to talk about and I could easily accept that.

In Great Britain it's also taboo too - you may discuss your salary with your family or close friends but it's considered rude to go up to strangers and ask them directly how much they earn. Many will decline to answer. As there is a class system in the U.K there will be comparisons/shame attached to money and so it's best for people that they don't talk about what they earn.

Here in the U.S there is a general air of taboo about the subject, especially when working non-salary jobs I've noticed over the years. When in the service industry doing food service or retail I have heard managers make more of a fuss over that than anything else when I had been employed at an office! This has led me to believe, at least over here, that the employees of those types of businesses are even more encouraged to stay quiet under threat of being fired.

In the United States it depends a lot on social circles. I grew up poor in Maine and we would share our salaries without much issue (an hourly rate). I live in a wealthier neighborhood in Colorado now and if I just asked a random person their salary here they would likely tell me, but it’d be a weird question. Among friends less weird, but still not common. I lead a tech consulting team at a larger company from the Bay Area in California and I earn about $272,000/year, not including stock options I have in the currently privately held company. We should share our earnings more. It primarily benefits the wealthy that we keep them private.

Wirklich sehr schade...
@TheRealChiults

IMO, it's very similar to the private sector in the US, Mexico and Brazil. In my experience, most people see salary as a social status, and therefore, the greater (or fewer) amount of money you make per month or year, you belong to a corresponding social class. In other cases, it's not about how much money you say you make, but what assets you show to have: your house, car, where you eat, where you go on holiday and how often, your clothes, your shoes. All of these are perceived as indicators of wealth.

Really interesting to see how personally this is taken!! We can be similar in the UK, morseo in older generations however, depending on how it's asked I would suggest the younger generation are more honest about it and I would imagine only the high earners would be likely to be perhaps defensive, or people that perhaps feel guilt that they "make" an amount they aren't necessarily "earning" 😆

@@mackieincsouthsea 40 k is like the median salary not much money at all. You would struggle without relying on the state your whole life. You need double that if you want to live a semi decent life and raise a family nowadays. Re: the idea of guilt for making money. I first got this feeling when I made my first large sum on money suddenly. Which gave me a lot of confusion because I didn't do anything wrong. Really all I did was take some risk other wouldn't have and I was rewarded. Many people don't participate in business or finance and take risks that's why they don't make as much. That's life. Now I didn't exactly have it easy my whole life either, I spent a over a decade doing hard back breaking labor for the family farm. I don't think how much money someone makes matters much when I see them.Nor did I ever resent other who were better off than me when I had nothing.
