I was a Sky Marshal in 1971. Depending on your shooting skill levels, you were issued either a 4” barrel Model 15 S&W or a Model 60 S&W J-frame in stainless steel. I carried the 5-shot J-frame. The final qualification was in a mock-up of an aircraft cabin with silhouettes representing passengers. You started from a sitting position and had to qualify by shooting with both strong and weak hands. Needless to say, you were disqualified if you hit a passenger. It was a tough job. I had to fly out of LA to Hawaii twice a week. LOL. Of course, the red-eye flights from LA to Detroit to Miami and back were a pain.

@@FullCircleReloading I don’t think whether one test was easier or harder than the other is essential. As long as you can put rounds into the right target at the right time, under stress, it’s all good. Under stress are the keywords. It’s incredible how fumble-fingered you can get trying to reload a 5-shot J-frame from a dump pouch in a stressful situation. I think we old revolver guys (I bought my first J-frame Chief’s Special in 1962) are more conscious of bullet placement and firing as few rounds as possible to stop the target than the shooters with 18-round magazines and quick reloads. But that is just one old codger’s opinion. Once you pass 80, you can have all kinds of opinions. We did all of our stuff before the internet. LOL.

I was a USAF Raven (484) when 911 took place an we flew a FAA until the numbers got spun up, then back to military missions after they got them up. With a Berretta 92F we had to shoot the FAA course in 2001 and 2002 and I remember it was very fast, lots of rounds quick and accurate from a seated position (simulating an aircraft for our purposes) and yes it was harder. We were taught the very minimum to be able to fly as FAA because at the time we were the closest to an FAA there was.

I’m not LEO, but this test I’m sure was a basic qualification test for AMS , and as the marshal said , shooting mocks were required as well. One thing to consider is that CCW has flourished in this country, as has the training. I’m glad for this. We as CCW , should be as proficient as LEO, we are defending our lives or others. Because advanced shooting tactics are “ easy” for CCW shooters , should be a good sign for us. Not a reason to doubt LEO .

Good place to start: if you’re right handed, turn right. Lead with your eyes to the target. It turns your should then your hips. Everything moves at once. Pivot on the right foot, spin the left. Muzzle come to eyes on the first target. Ole USPSA trick on El Prez. Only caveat is shooting appendix at an actual match. Draw too quick, you’ll be pointing up range. 😮

With the environment an Air Marshal may have to shoot in (crowded plane or terminal) you would think the standards for accuracy would be very tight (like 4” or 6” circle or something like that). @brianb7388
@brianb7388 Ай бұрын
@@sgtbeam NSW teaches low ready exactly as this guy did it. Shooting grip, finger indexed outside the trigger guard, muzzle roughly aimed at the feet of the target. The further away the target the higher the low ready becomes. High ready is shooting grip, finger indexed outside the trigger guard, elbows bent down muzzle at roughly 45 degrees. There's also compressed high ready, shooting grip, finger indexed, elbows bent and tucked until your forearms are touching your web gear/plate carrier. The muzzle in the compressed high ready has to alway be in your thoughts as it's very easy to flag your buddies which is obviously a huge no bueno. all of them have various strengths and weaknesses. the high ready is the most combative but blocks some of your line of vision. it's good unless you're in a multi story situation with friends above you. the low ready is similar with the added plus of no vision impairment but less combative and less practical for high speed movement. Also less favorable in a multi story situation with friendlies below you.

Having had to shoot that qual for my job or be fired in early 2002 one thing I didn’t hear was the split time check on the 6 shot drill. As others have pointed out it use to be a 229 with 357 sig DA/SA from a snapped in leather hip holster. When I retired they had not yet approved red dots for duty but off duty weapons we could. What got many was the splits and the stress over making it or going home unemployed (but that has changed).

Not the end of the world, but a couple of observations: 1) Shooter #1 and cameraman should be wearing eye pro. 2) You need to be using the QIT-97 target for this qual. This is a very specific target that is more difficult than either the one you used or the FBI QIT-99 bottle target, and would have impacted your scores quite a bit. 3) For the strings starting from the low ready, you are using a contemporary "low ready," when the low ready of the 1990's (this qual is from 1992) would be a 45° angle. To keep your exercise honest, you should have been using the low ready of that era. Remember, USFAM migrated away from this 1992 qual after they ramped up their size post-9/11 because too few recruits could pass the 1992 qual. I believe they went to something easier like the FBI qual, or something similar to it (not sure). 4) When shooter #1 turns 180°, he is turning backward into the unknown, which is a big tactical no-no. You always turn forward into the known like shooter #2 did to avoid tripping on objects or curbs you can't see behind you. Shooter #2 does it right, and I like how he alternated directions between the turns. 5) On some occasions, you guys did gaming style dry run practice on a test that's supposed to be cold. Again, none of these are deal breakers, but wanted the audience to understand some of the nuances of this really great test.

This is the single most insightful and helpful review of the ENTIRE thread. The guys not wearing eye protection are adults and can make their own decision although I don’t disagree. We used the target that was mentioned in the video we referenced but we will be doing a part two with the correct target. With so many definitions of low ready we used the one we were both taught in the military which was to aim at the “feet” of the target but we can address that in the part two. The turning thing wasn’t specified in the drill. I’m not sure why he turned the way he did but I did both just so people couldn’t make comments about it. We did run the drill cold but I can understand where you’re coming from with some of the weapons handling. I’ll make sure to truly address that on the part two as well. I really appreciate your comment. Most of the responses on here are trash. I’m glad to see a couple outliers.

To be fair, first shooter has staged his reload. Irrespective of the method of carry, as he is configured you would not be on an aircraft as presented, the weapon and any supporting equipment must be concealed. This is not only an agency requirement but an airline regulation. The garment or garments must completely “conceal”. As far as the qual itself, it isn’t particularly difficult. The standard was restructured to reduce the number of failures. This has been an aggravating theme in regard to minimum standards across all of the alphabet agencies. I do agree that this is a great minimum for a private citizen who chooses to conceal carry.

@@FullCircleReloading I personally agree with you on this, but most don't. In my home state of Indiana, all you need to do to get a carry permit is pass a background check. I have shot all types of scenerios in competition events over the last 40 years, and it is humorous and scary to watch because you can tell the ones that never practice or practice very little. I darn sure wouldn't want to be close to the perp with these types grabbing iron. Also, I can understand the reasoning behind not recommending appendix carry for an Air marshall because it would be difficult (I think??) to hide it while sitting and to engage it from a sitting position. As a lefty, my preferred concealed carry is either IWB or OWB at the 8 o'clock position with my extra mag at the 3 or 4 o'clock position. I also position my extra mag with the bullets facing forward because that it how I have them on my competition rigs and during a stress fire situation, my muscle memory kicks in and does what I have practiced.

It’s not. While the times seem generous, it’s only true on a static 180 range. You need the faster proficiency so when you have multiple layers, you can still get the muzzle up to work as quick as possible. Shooting is 90% visual. Breaking the shot is always ALWAYS dictated by proper firing solution. And proper in an airplane is near perfect. Proper for the point of qual, is to qual.

@FullCircleReloading From my understanding the correct qit target is is the 21.75"L x 12" w bottle with the 6.25L x 4" w center box and a 3" x 3" upper box. And the scoring should be 5pts in the box, 2pts in the bottle, but out of the box, 0pts out of the bottle. Line breaks assume the lower score. There are several variations of the bottle target, none of which should have the scoring rings like your example, to my knowledge. The hit boxes should be outlines only, with no special colors in the bottle. Nor should you use the extended length bottle (26")

But...... you have to have a gun range that allows freedom of movement and drawing from holster. Most are square ranges either indoor or outdoor that are restricted behind a shooting table with no drawing from holster behind the table. You will be lucky if they have one range set aside mainly for shotgun with from holster and freedom of movement with no tables. The best most can do is starting from pistol on the table rather than in the holster. So drawing from holster can be restricted to dry fire only due to ranges that restrict drawing from holster and freedom of movement.

90% of this drill can be practiced at home in the basement and just dry firing. None of the movements are complex and accuracy standard is low. Making sure you are proficient in your draw, reloads and transitions can all be done at home.

These are cool drills. My only issue here with things like this are the types of targets. I’m no expert on gunfights and hopefully never gain the experience but how often does someone get presented with a full silhouette? My limited exposure to life or death situations has taught me that I won’t be given a full silhouette…at least I wasn’t, your experience may vary. If someone’s shooting at you they’re likely to be taking cover or behind concealment allowing you only a sliver of the target to be presented. Think peeking corners, cracked doors and behind other people. We’ve all seen the “hostage” targets. Maybe I’ll go out and duct tape two vertically parallel lines about 4 inches apart to mimic a cracked door only allowing for a sliver of the target to be exposed to my sights.
