We Begin Refurbishing our 1840s Tiny Cottage on the Isle of Skye, Highlands, Scotland - Ep10

Willie, Sarah and their dog, Jack Spaniels, continue their biggest adventure yet - leaving their suburban life and moving over the sea to 'Live The Skye Life'!
In this episode, the 'Skye Lifers' start the renovations of their stone-built outbuilding, or byre, which was probably used well over a century ago to house livestock on the cottage croft.
In this week's art section, see Sarah take on a challenging art work, as she paints one of the semi-wild Highland ponies that roam free in the glen!

Sarah, your horse is fantastic. Willie, dont feel left out the wood store is very good too. I liked Jack Spaniels cam a very interesting perspective. Curious to see the Byre progress - was that a very small door/window at the back. What would have been the use? When you said supper, was hoping you were going to treat us to a receipe. Great to see progress on the wood store and byre. Insulation is going to be a challenge, it is an extra cost but I think a wooden floor may give you a little more comfort and warmth from the elements of a cold concrete floor. Thanks Stuart - yes we are about to start construction on the Byre, shorty after the shed construction, which begins tomorrow. An insulated wooden floor is the first part of the build, along with a fully insulated wooden internal structure. Glad you're enjoying watching! 🙂

To be clearer, a byre is for cattle, and a barn is for general storage--often of hay.

Thanks Terry! Yes, we have barns here too, but they tend to be much larger farm buildings whereas byres are for individual homesteads and traditionally used for livestock, as Janet has said 😊

Yes, we just burned the pieces that were a bit smelly from mould and rot outdoors - and some parts that were jammed with old rusty nails.

I was always out and about during the day, no matter what the weather was like! Tinkering with bits of wood, taking long walks, getting home when i was hungry. Happy times! @@livingtheskyelife I will be 70 in August and since I’ve retired and we have downsized to a 2 bed bungalow I have become obsessed with logs for our logburner. I’ve got an electric bicycle and I ride around the villages looking for fallen branches, then when I’ve spotted enough I get in my fiesta van with my Stihl battery chainsaw.I can normally get a full van load on one charge. I’ve had to build a second log store,one for wood to use and one to season. I feel very happy walking past my full log stores.😊would you be able to put solar panels on youre roof.we have only been in the bungalow 13 months.but we have had 16 solar panels and a Tesla battery in the garage the battery runs the house when the sun goes in. Keep up the good work I love you’re channel.👍🇬🇧

Hi Guys, my great grandmother Sarah left Skye in the early 1840s and sailed off into the unknown…… Australia.. imagine that! I feel such a connection to where you are. I’m now 70, and my grandfather was 75 when I was born. He was her youngest child. Gracious.. cheers for showing your home, and the area around. Hi friends, My family and I visited Scotland last year (March) and we were lucky enough to visit Skye. We stayed in Luib, hiked the Fairy Pools, visited Portree, and we loved every minute of it. We loved it so much so, that we are coming back next May. We follow your channel, and love seeing all of your adventures, the beautiful area, and Jack of course. Keep the videos coming. We can’t wait to come back! 13 months and counting. We also have 3 of Sara’s prints proudly hanging in our home. P.S. We live in the U.S., Southern California in a city called Temecula. Great job , well done. Thanks for an entertaining video. The tool you found Willie is a bill hook which is used for trimming wee branches off trees. It’s lethal after being sharpened. May I respectfully suggest that you repurpose the half door you found as it looks like old oak and will come up beautifully with some tlc. Maybe power sanded and oiled to make a table top? Wow you have been busy! The fuzzy works very well, the wind really didn't bother me though as it just added to the walks. Jack is Very happy in your new home too! That is so good! I have seen and heard of pets who pine for the homes the family had moved from. The work you did making the wood shed will pay off time and time again. I was laughing at seeing the camera on Jack from front and behind view. Lots of bouncing around. I think Willie has done a good job in dismantling the timbers in the byer and making the wood storage place. Can't wait to see how you finish the byer.
