I am legit researching building a fence myself and live in an area with a 4 foot frost depth, and routine 40 mph winds with 70 mph gusting. I love your channel and will probably keep watching after i build the fence. Im going to build more than one fence, right? And you guys are staying on the leading edge of residential fencing construction techniques, thank you for caring to do things well!

Personally, living in Oklahoma, I'm not a fan vinyl fences. I think they actually look cheap...which is sad because we know that they are not cheap. I totally believe in using the steel, driven posts, but it was kind of satisfying watching those vinyl pickets flying everywhere vs the wood pickets staying in place.😂

I'm wondering if the steel post of the future will have something like a coil spring at ground level to gently rock with the wind yet return back home with no bending. 🤔
@robertb88242 ай бұрын
The one thing I would have liked to see was vinyl fence, with steel post and good concrete. This would show us how much of the improvement is from the post and how much is from the set method.

One other thing that would happen in a real windstorm with a real fence is that the wind wouldn’t have space to escape on each side like in your tests. So, would probably fail even faster.

I would be interested to see a similar test on the no concrete posts but when the ground is saturated with water. More like a hurricane.

I love the idea of the steel post and driving them in so as not to disturb the ground and weaken it. If the posts are bending, why not make stringer posts and place them in the ground every 3 or 4 feet apart. I too am a belt and suspenders guy...

Great fences! and great video!!! But in an open field in front of a monster wind machine? Better eye protection might be a consideration next time? You know the old saying - it's all fun and games until someone loses an eye. Great video - unbeatable!

We had a 94mph west wind here in like late April so trees and fences suffered. But then last year the teen fools pulled pranks all around town and did tackle plastic fences just to be jerks knocking them down. 20 yrs back, vinyl fence installers didn't mix eater to the bag mix, they'd tell you that ground moisture would solidify the 60 pound mix in ground.

Nice to see in real world test how well driven posts work. My only issue is if driving posts why not much deeper like 4-5ft deep? It wouldn’t cost much more to buy longer poles.
@peeweedan92 ай бұрын
If I recall correctly, one of there previous videos touched on this subject. Something about it not needing to be any deeper due to the failure point at 3ft deep always being the pipe, as well as the deformation to the top of the post using their driving method.

Galvanized fence with 8 foot pole 2 1/2 inches. Small 2 Acre farm for Security and sheep. 50 foot rolls at nine or 11 gauge. Plan to pound poles 2 feet in the ground,no concrete, just me to build. Plan to use my 4 x 4 pick up to stand on and pounding the post. Do you think it will work? (Maverick)

@SWI Fence, thanks for doing this. During hurricanes, the ground is usually water saturated. Any chance on replicating some of these tests with soggy ground?
@SWiFenceАй бұрын
Unfortunately not any time soon just due to logistics and life. It's not quite the same thing, but here's a video where we test how deep no-dig posts have to be, and we set some of those in saturated ground: kzbin.info/www/bejne/o5ScY6asq6iFfNE It's a different kind of post but the principle still applies.

Option 3 - You buy a massive fleet of air boats and whenever a hurricane hits and is pushing on the fence, you line up all of your airboats on the opposite side of the fence so that they are countering the hurricane wind. No digging involved and only requires maybe 3-4 million dollars. My ideas are usually so good they make too much sense.

Does it make a difference if the steel pipe center is also filled with concrete? I set a post then filled the center of the pipe with concrete and that made the post near impossible to bend or flex. Only the ground moved; however, it did not put a bend in the post itself.

In Japan we also get strong hurricanes and nearly always build fences with gaps between the slats, sometimes on both sides to provide more privacy. You cannot beat Mother Nature so best to allow it to pass through. From my own experience pressure treated pine will rot out in much less than 25 years, Only Ippe or something like that would last so long.

What is best method when replacing a fence that had 4x4 in concrete if you want to use postmaster posts? Set in same post holes with concrete or move posts over and drive where possible. Corners are not moveable positions. We have hurricane force and just had derecho winds prior to hurricane here in Houston.
@SWiFence2 ай бұрын
Those are basically your two choices and it's up to you which you'd rather do. The corners will obviously have to be concreted.

In an upcoming Q&A video, could you please explain the Wyoming/ Florida relationship? Those aren't really border states. Why does one of you live in Florida and the other live in Wyoming? That really seems random. Also, what are your travel costs like? I see each of you in the other's states in these videos, so how does that work? Florida has lots of large airports, but Wyoming... doesn't. I have so many questions.
@SWiFence2 ай бұрын
Our other channel @successfulcontractor has more info on that whole transition. Mark moved to Florida for a while to escape the cold, but then ended up moving back to Wyoming because the family didn't prefer it down there as much. While he was there he started a fence company. And no, Wyoming has no large airports. But you don't need a large one, you just need a connection to Denver and from there you're good to go.

@@SWiFence OK. I just watched the bucket video and the failure video. Wow. Yeah. Wyoming and Florida make more sense now. In a weird way, I'm happy for you. I think you have a better idea of what you want to do, and don't want to do. And that's a good place to be in.

What about a wooden horizontal fence that the 4x4's has a dado on both sides that the decking boards slide into the 4x4's ? And maybe also using different type of wooden fence material instead of decking boards with 2 80 pounds of concrete in each hole .

#1 hurricane Debby didn't do any damage #2 Florida is mainly sand no matter if you drive your post or dig and set when we get a lot of rain in a hurricane the ground gets so saturated it's still going to lean over I've seen post 5 ft deep with 200 lbs of concrete bend over after Ian I've seen no dig fence drove 4 ft lean over. I admit the no dig does perform better in wind but it's going down in a hurricane

Should have had the exact same specs on each fence with the only difference being concrete vs pounded. Start with 2ft concrete vs 2ft pounded then move to 3ft and 3.5ft. When you are using steel then concrete is protective of the steel. The dirt will (slowly) rust the steel. I don't see how post masters in concrete wouldn't be better than pounded, not that I would recommend it because pounding is just way better for me as a contractor. I would imagine steel in concrete to be close to a life time solution Another comment is that almost no one in my area uses 4x4 posts, 4x6 or 6x6 are used. Still agree with the logic in the video that in 10 years the wood fence would get absolutely destroyed compared to the strength loss in 10 years from steel

Why you guys don't build the post using concrete and rest of made of wood or anything else. As far as i know, you guys have insane amount of hurricane. I mean yes it would be little bit more expensive but it's better to build once then multiple times. In this video, all the tests are really nice and shows that first part that fails is the post. Alternative solution is the letting the air pass.

Seems like you guys are trying to prove how vinyl fences are better than wooden ones. The vinyl fences failed on their own and you had to make the wooden fences fail. Yes wood can deteriorate over time but so does plastic. Wood will eventually rot or dry out and the vinyl will become brittle and crack. It is clear that the wooden fence is much stronger from your own testing.

Vinyl fencing is tacky. The crap deteriorates in the sun and looks terrible. A pallet wood fence treated with used motor oil even looks better. If you shoot a vinyl fence with a paintball gun on a cold day the fence will loose.
@IMZReady4AnythingАй бұрын
Why are you forcing the wooden fence to fail is my question are you trying to find the best fence or are you trying to prove an opinion that you have which you’ve kind of already disprove that vinyl is better than wood because your wooden friends hasn’t failed even though you know it’s going to fail did not fail your test or your vinyl fence did fail.
