You can buy smaller portions. It is well worth it will save you a lot in the log run. And it tastes so much better. Very scary after eating the home range cows how taste less expensive grocery store meat is or pay horrific money at the butcher per pound for the good meat you will pay about 3.00 a pound for. :)

I enjoy watching the videos. Your family seems wonderful and I can tell you are very caring people. I did hear a comment regarding "people not wanting to work because they collect unemployment" and, to that, I would like to share another perspective. Being someone that has been out of work since November 2020, after having to close two small businesses in March 2020. I had unemployment for a short time but chose to do Gig jobs until I can find something in my field. 1. There are those of us that are now doing Gig Jobs because they actually pay more, I've been driving Uber and Lyft because it's better to stay busy and keep sending out resumes'. My background is in Corporate Training, I'm receiving interviews and making it through several rounds, however so are a lot of other people. 2. If I were one of the individuals that made $10 an hour and now I can make more at a Gig Job, why would I want to return to that type of work. 3. A lot of new opportunities have been created, due to the pandemic, thus some individuals are now working for themselves with businesses they have created, making more money now. 4. My brother-in-law was laid off in June 2020 and has been looking for a job in his field since then, again many other people are also in his field of Supply Chain and Logistics. Some may say, well just take a job until you get a new one. He's very over qualified and people don't always want to hire someone that is over-qualified. 5. It's easy to say "no one wants to work because they are collecting unemployment". It's a very blanket, stereotypical comment. I'm not saying there aren't those that fall into this category, however you never know someone's circumstances and it's best to remember that. 6. I know folks will think, this is coming from someone that isn't a believer in Christ, that isn't true. I've walked with Him for many years. It's sad to hear comments such as that because it continues to cause division in our country. Finally, doing ride share work has allowed me the opportunity to talk to all kinds of folks and hear what they are experiencing. People from all walks of life, geographically, race, economic levels, and one thing I've learned is they all want to take care of their families. We share more commonalities. Some people may lack education, they may not have had positive, encouraging families, some have ivy league backgrounds and were taught how to use money effectively. People are afraid, and unsure how to proceed, some are very confident and able to bounce back effectively. There are just too many variables to consider, thus having a blanket statement is not accurate or fair. I appreciate your content and will continue to be a loyal viewer. Thank you for all you do.

Kim.thank you for sharing so clearly. I agree with you that it's complicated. I went back to work 6 weeks ago after being laid off since Jan. 2020. With no unemployment at all. I only went back to looking for work once everyone in our home had been vaxed. Older people in our home... And being off that long.. it was hard. I turned in applications and took the job that offered me a job on the spot.. 13.50 a hour picking and packing basil.. my poor body was soooo out of shape, it hurt.. but I'm much more used to getting up and working now. Another. Reason people may not be going to work is child care... It's a lot slimmer then it was a year ago. More places are only taking a few children now so harder to find a place your trust

Hey Solo, I am a single mother that was laid off. I made $82,000 annually. My company never called me back or numerous other employees, instead they hired new people at significantly lower pay scales. I am now resorting to waitressing for $8.00 an hour until something better comes along I am very fortunate that I have parents close to watch my babies otherwise I don't know what I would do. Don't be so quick to believe that people don't want to work. Many people are in the same situation as I am. It is not right what many businesses have done to people. It's really sad to hear people say others don't want to work, they only want to collect unemployment. Stop and think about that. People not only lost their jobs but they also lost their health insurance, a stop to retirement savings and their dignity. Yes people want to work.

Thank you so much for sharing your story. So many people are willing to believe what they are told without really understanding the details. This meat packer is clearly in the country if it's 90 miles from Lincoln. That means the person has to have transportation. If the employee lives just 15 miles away, gas alone will be $3 a day. Likely, this job "no one do" is 5 days a week. That's $15 a week plus upkeep. And, it's probably not full-time because the employer would have to offer benefits. Blanket statements are hurtful and demeaning.

Where I live (Indianapolis, IN- city of around 1 million people) there are "Help Wanted" signs absolutely everywhere. Everyone is hiring and they are hiring people on the spot who apply- even less-than-qualified people- because no one is wanting to work here. It's the same in Destin, FL where we vacationed last month. They're having to close half of the restaurant dining rooms during peak season because they can't find waitstaff to work. And places are closing completely several days per week because the businesses can't find enough staff. I completely understand what Solo was saying because I've seen it in two places and along our entire drive between them through 4 other states. The Covid unemployment boost has allowed people the ability to thrive on unemployment, not just survive. Why take a pay cut to work a job when you could stay home and make more from unemployment? Hopefully they get rid of the additional unemployment payments and go back to normal unemployment rates so that our workforce can return to normal before the economy is even more destroyed.

Hey Gloria - So sorry to hear about your job situation. Hope things work out for you soon and you get a good break. Those were sentiments the butcher relayed as a struggle he was having in finding help that he easily could get prior to Covid. It certainly does not apply to all situation. It was also a jab on the system not people. No harm intended. Solo

Just a little note on the weight of your beef. There are 3 weights to consider. The live weight, hanging weight, and final yield. Usually you pay for the hanging weight-1200 pounds, and actually get about 700-800 pounds back. Just to help with your cost analyses.

I think it's unjust to accuse people not willing to work because of unemployment benefits. To be a butcher is something you really need to learn. And to work in one of these meat processing plants is such a hard work, not everyone can do it. Also these were the places who didn't want to protect their workers from Covid and didn't pay them if they got sick with Covid on their workplace.

We buy a beef each year from a local rancher or head to my family's ranch two states away to get one. It is so nice having grass fed beef that was butchered just two weeks before it gets into our freezer. I also like not worrying about pink slime or a problem with production (like the ransomware attacks on the big producers last week!) I remind my neighbors, friends, and extended family that if they go in together they can split a beef into halves, quarters, or even eighths so not to feel like they can't get beef directly from a rancher because of large quantities. This also helps family ranchers who can then sell their beef cattle directly to consumers and not have to take low prices from sale barns.

We also purchase a whole hog from a local farmer. $250 to the farmer and another $200 to the processor. We raise cattle for showing and for emergency expenses we can sell one if needed. We havent been able to afford to butcher one of our own in years. But most of our steers are in the 1200 to 1500 pound live weight. And at about .75 per pound for processing and a $40 to $60 kill fee that's a very large chunk of money to come up with at once. Plus space for freezers is minimal

The people who would normally work the lower paid jobs are the ones making more from unemployment than they would working. Obviously those who earned more from your careers are not in that same boat. And you're also choosing not to go work full time at a fast food joint for $600/week and instead are collecting unemployment for $600/week. Which I don't blame you! But the ones who normally do work those jobs are making more staying home and collecting unemployment and it's leaving massive job openings in the economy that need to be filled.

@@ericas1458 What fast food joint pays 600 a week? Very few offer full time to more than managers and employees are sent home sometimes almost as soon as they arrive to keep payroll down. I can say that with confidence as I managed places like that and I certainly didn't earn 600 a week even as a manager. Even if companies go to 15 per hour, a 40 hour week would get 600 before withholding. After withholding not even close. Part time certainly would not. Also there are many factors for people not finding work right now. Those affected by post covid syndrome. Those who have children whos childcare is no longer there. Those who are trying to get their children through the last part of the school year because theirs is still online.

@@allyoop6552 I think you're proving my point. That's $600/week on top of the normal unemployment rate for states. That's $900/week where I live. What job can they get right now that will pay them anything close to that? So why would they return to work if they can sit at home and make more money? Also I was easily making $600/week take home waiting tables. Not saying that's making anyone rich but my husband and I both worked full time as restaurant servers (and not at upscale restaurants) and averaged $600/week each. I'm not arguing that $600/week is enough I'm just saying there are jobs that don't require a degree or experience where you can make that. And I'm saying there are ALOT of people right now who are choosing to stay home and collect the same or more $ from unemployment than they would if they took any of the available jobs right now. If the Covid unemployment bonus goes away- those jobs will be filled. Whether that's a good thing or bad thing is opinion.

@@ericas1458 I miss understood. But now its only 300 a week federal stimulus which makes it still less than 600 after withholding. And I don't deny there are those taking advantage of the extra. Because there are always those bad apples. But what happens when there are dozens of people trying for the same job? And where I live companies used the pandemic to downsize. I live in a town with at least half a dozen factories and they aren't hiring. And many food establishments have decided to downsize to 5 days a week from 7 and only serve 4-9. But heres to recovery. And I totally agree that 600 a week take home doesn't make one rich. When people heard I was working 80+ hours a week either at 1 job or between 2 the first thing they said was "wow you must be rich". Not "wow it takes a lot to provide".

Love your family! But I was quite disappointed by Solo’s phrase “free money” . the majority of the families (myself included) would have gotten denied for unemployment payments if they had no prof of employment prior to 2020. We all worked for this money. Some finally have the opportunity to raise their new born babies, see their children more and teach their children their own values. I have worked in USA since I was 14 years old, 2 jobs at 16 and I am in my late 20’s helping raise my younger siblings. 2020 was the first year I could ‘rest’ and actually think about my own career and life. I was able to go to doctor appointments and take classes that I wouldve been excluded from while working my 9-5 at a hospital. Please keep in mind that there are people who would love to be able to make a sustainable living as well as giving your full attention to your families needs like you all have. But most companies, small businesses included, do not offer MORE than what the government is offering right now. Minimum wage in my state is $14, which is PRETTY darn high for most states. Average monthly rent is $1650 a month in my state! Nobody should be forced to leave their families or drop out of school to work for less than they’re worth. I hope this was not offensive, just another view from someone who does appreciate your opinion. Much love

$3 per pound is probably hanging weight cost. What you get is not 1200 lbs of meat because of the skin bones and such. You probably got about 700-800 lbs of meat. Still a great savings. Our beef has ended up costing around $6-7 per lb cut and packaged. I weigh the boxes when I get them home to calculate finished cost. Since even organic ground beef is $6 per lb here i feel like we get everything, roasts, steaks and burger at ground beef prices. It’s organic and we know where it came from and how it is finished. It tastes so much better than what you get in the store. There is virtually nothing to drain off the ground beef when it’s cooked, so I know I’m not getting a bunch of ice added in for weight like they do in the supermarket. We get a half which usually lasts 3 adults about 18 months. In so thankful we got our meat in December 2019 as we has a freezer full for all of the pandemic. The lord provides.

Quick hack on picking up your cow order.. if there are some that don’t fit in your cooler, place meat in hefty black bags, place inside a box & throw a blanket over them. They will stay frozen till you get home. I get mine 3.5hrs away & have never had an issue. I’ve also used Aldi freezer bags (which I store in the coolers) for the meat. Saves me from buying another cooler that I have no where to store!
