In order to build durable, economical rural road, you need 3x things: 1. Ditches, 2. water barrier, and 3. Filter cloth under the gravel (its a must). Greetings from the andes mountains of Colombia.
@learningthelands
@learningthelands 7 ай бұрын
Can't lay filter cloth on literal water. It's about a foot of water/mud then bedrock.

Be careful with shale. The stone is thin and flat. If a piece is vertical, it can imbed in your tires, like an arrowhead. I would suggest that you spread a few inches of 3/4 inch road crush on top of the base layer.
@learningthelands
@learningthelands 9 ай бұрын
I haven't had that problem yet but that's the plan. It'll be finished with a top layer of either type 2 or type 1 crusher run. I kind of like the bigger type 2, which I think is 1-2", over the smaller type 1 which is less than an inch.

@@learningthelands You got a great deal on the land. I am in central Alberta, where an acre can cost more than $50 000. CDN.

Wow! Yeah we were comparing this to Vancouver Island where it's over 100k an acre for land that's barely useable because it's on the side of a mountain. Alberta and BC are beautiful but you just can't get this there for anywhere near the same price.

Creating roads on my land in Nova Scotia, I've learned to be patient. Clear the organic material to the side, and immediately start digging ditches, putting the material in the middle and then flatten it out let it sit until it dries. You never have to worry about digging a ditch too deep to get more material, it'll fill itself in on the low spots on it's own eventually. If you have the luxury of getting gravel delivered, great, but you can absolutely get away with roughing a road in without it. Of course if you've got water that needs to cross your path, you'll need culverts or it will cut it's own way across. I got away with mostly 6" and a couple 12" which are the cheapest of the culverts you can buy.

Factor in heavy snow bro! Youre gonna get it every winter. A long driveway will mean youre going to need somewhere to pile it or blow it and still have enough room for more throughout the winter.

It'd be nice if you were able to find a gravel vein on high ground so that you'd have all the gravel you'd need to widen that road.

Good luck, saying hello from Chicago ;)) I've been to Nova Scotia a few times before, it's very nice out there. Currently, I'm developing an undeveloped 1/2 acre lot (paid $110k) in the Chicago suburbs ;) The size is not comparable but it is also a very challenging task. I'll be watching your progress ;)👏👏👏

This looks like a fun project and I will follow your work. You may want to research road structure a bit before you spend too much more time and money. Building a road on a poor base will not last. You need to remove the organic material and possibly put down a geotextile fabric to keep your layers separate and spread out the loads. Regular compaction is also key, thin layers properly compacted will last a long time.
@learningthelands
@learningthelands 9 ай бұрын
Thanks and I appreciate your concern. I wish I filmed more of the before but this IS the base. Geo and more gravel will be going down in the spring after the freeze thaw cycles have stopped. I've been consulting with local contractors on all this. You can't lay geo down on water, and that's what most of this area was once I removed the trees and top layer of soil. The good thing is the large grave/shalel here is is sitting on rock, since that's what most of Nova Scotia is as soon as you start digging a little.

turn wet spots into a big pond,, come fire season a pond for fire fighting as you saw out there is a big thing. ask neighbors how the snow is blown, so you dont build a driveway that will be blown in vs someway that its wisked away.someone with a drone can scope the land to give an idea of wet spots . and finding an area with gravel might help being a supply.. guys buy a non safety inspected truck and run back N forth and fill their land and sell the truck to the next builder . and wet driveways you want 2-3" crushed rock, Round stuff never packs

Without the cloth, you will loss the gravel, due to the mud.

Its about a foot of mud, then bedrock. I don't think it's going anywhere anytime soon. We're debating laying cloth before the final layer to lock it all in.
