Just about anyone can go rent heavy equipment and be in charge of something very dangerous. In this vlog you'll see why operating heavy equipment cautiously with safety on your mind is so important as I experience a bush hog failure that could have easily been a lot worse had I not been operating the machine safely.
We've never owned land over a quarter acre before, and now we own over 100! Come along with us on our journey to build a self sufficient homestead while we DIY and learn everything along the way.

I think the house reno could get you a lot of views and as house construction methods vary across the globe so I’m sure you’ll get a good viewership from the DIY crew 😀.

Glad that you and your family are staying in our beautiful Province. You have great adventures ahead of you. The old man in me is glad to see you using appropriate safety gear and working cautiously. I will enjoy watching your progress on your land but also with your new (old) house. I renovated a house built in the 1940's in Digby. Quite the learning experience dealing with old drilled wells and old septic French drains! Thanks for taking us along with you. By the way, Walter's Bruce Roberts boat is still unsold in Gold River marina in case you know anyone looking for a good deal.

Thanks for the feedback. Great to here you're local! Also, yes. Safety is my top priority, especially now that I'm a Dad. Also, maybe Walter's boat deserves a revisit then.

I’d recommend a drum mulcher over a brush cutter for what you have there, would make quick work of everything including the spruce.

I wish, and I tried. No one rents those anywhere in Nova Scotia. I think mainly because it's so rocky here.

Documenting the house renovation could be interesting to watch. At the same time, I'm sure you know how much extra time that can add to a project. Yeah... really scary about the blade coming off the brush cutting attachment. Yikes!

Not sure where you bought in Nova Scotia but I have a flail mower for sale for an excavator that would mow just about everything you were doing with the skid steer. Might take alittle longer but probably cost the same as the rental

I don't own an excavator unfortunately, although I'd like to!

Man you got a shitload of work to do 💪, wouldn't it be better to buy the machinery then renting it with the amount you have to do? You can always resell them if money gets tight? Unless renting is cheap where you are? We bought a mini excavator 2ndhand for this reason. Anyways good luck with your project!!

Problem is I'm too new to the country and I don't have a "normal" job so it's still too risky for lenders. I'd have to pay cash and I'm not forking out all our cash for an excavator right now. Maybe in a year or two when we're more established in the country financially we can get a loan.

Do you have lions tigers and bears ,do you carry and or have a rifle to protect yourself , i have been in the forest and have been approached by wild dogs ,foxs n coyotes. Never know in the moment if they carry rabies, I was carrying n neer my tree stand . ,did you get your money back for the brush hog failure, or maybe a discount . God bless yall real good.

Bear spray. We don't have any big predators here, or if we do it's rare. Eventually I'll get a rifle. They came out and fixed the bush hog.

Cape Breton has Bears, Wolves, Coyotes, and some large cats. However, Nova Scotia is very sparsely populated. IIRC, humans only occupy 12% of the land, so generally speaking the animals are able to do whatever they want without ever encountering humans. The worst thing he'd likely have to deal with are foxes that might try to steal any food left out.
