Have you watched Doug & Stacey's channel where they talk about bees? They've had Dr. Leo Sharashkin on their channel a number of times and I see that you're using his instructions for the hive which is great. He also recommends catching bees from your own area because they have the best chance of surviving since they're adapted to your local environment. He explains and shows how to go about it--really interesting.

I'm a beekeeper, I recommend that you buy a nuc instead of a package. A nuc comes with several frames of honey and pollen, bees and a queen that is already laying. This allows for the bees to have resources and for the hive to be more productive earlier in the season thus having greater over wintering success. Good luck!

We will also have a rescue pony named Nacho, I’ve worked with his rescue for years and the poor little guy just cannot seem to find a forever home. He’s been returned twice because both adopters other horses didn’t like him! The bees will be 100% my hobby. My fiancé is scared to death of flying insects 😂 he’s already slightly upset that our kitten will be decorated in bees 🐝

I love bees and we own a few 1000s 🐝. If you have bigger frames (by hight) it would be better for the warmth of the beehive. The less space you have in the bottom of your beehive, the warmer it will. Ours is 2-3 cm space. The extra big space creates wind circulation coming from the entry of the beehive. I wish i could explained it better, but English is not my first language, I'm so sorry. Loved this video for once more 😍❤️ God bless you and can't wait for piglets, baby goats, baby chickens and bees 🌾🐖🐐🐣🐔🐓🐝🌻 xo's Marios from Greece 🇬🇷

@@LumnahAcres - The top box has these mechanisms in them that the bees store the honey into and cap off. When it's time there is a long metal bar called a key and you stick it in and twist and there are tubings you connect to it and it drains straight into the jar.The mechanism is just like a honeycomb. Here is the link so you can see them. www.honeyflow.com/shop/flow-hive/p/129?US%20%7C%20Search%20%7C%20Brand&msclkid=5a1530df5c56177de83c6ee9b4195bcb

@Lumnah Acres - Upkeep is pretty much the same as in all types with beetles and just keeping a healthy hive. The awesomeness is you can harvest in about 15 minutes. Here is a video of us harvesting. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eKbWoJZ9Z5uLZtk Other video kzbin.info/www/bejne/i3fZhWyJbtaLgJY No cons at the moment except price. We get the boxes/parts we can cheaper and support our locals as much as possible, but the top box has the mechanism in it. Replaces all the wand and centrifuge process and time. Everything else is the normal hive. You are very handy at building and could probably build everything and then purchase the top mechanism and tools used with it. You would have to see how they would break it down as in parts or if you might have to purchase the the whole top unit. not sure on that since we are not builders and have to purchase the whole unit. My husband does all of it and I watch and put up the honey. He loves them. From hive to jar to storage within an hour. Most of the time we have them sold immediately.

Al, Gina Glad to see you making Dr. Leo's horizontal hive (Modified.) as I intend to one day make one for my allotment. I've decided to try and catch my own bees like Doug and Stacy showed on their channel. The plan is to put a box on a cut down telegraph pole and build the hive directly beneath. I'm seriously behind with allotment work having been ill over Christmas and New year, combined with the weather being so poor. An opportunity for another day. At least now I get a how to from your good selves. It's getting lighter here and our chickens are starting to lay more regularly. I'm sure yours won't be far behind. Have a great Sunday! Regards Stephen. Forgot to say, paint your two hives with different patterns, so the bees always know their own home!

Not sure if you've done research on Housel positioning yet, but it's SUPER important information. It all has to do with the up Y and down Y positioning in the bottom of the comb cells. It's also highly beneficial for the bees to be allowed to build free comb, rather than be given comb foundation to build on. Housel positioning and natural comb size helps eliminate issues within the hive....like burr comb and varroa mite infestations, and all around temperament of the bees. Creates less work for both you and the bees, and it's super simple once you identify the up and down Y and mark your top bars. Hope it helps!

Al, I believe you may be making a mistake with the long hive. In my opinion it may be the wrong choice for such a cold climate. Bees cluster for warmth in cold weather. They "eat up" (move up as they consume honey) and have difficulty moving to the side in cold weather. I think the probability is high that they will not survive your first winter. I also recommend against 'top bar" hives. It is difficult to use any kind of mechanical extractor with "top bars" so basically, you will have to consume comb honey or squeeze the combs by hand. I would guess that the Nucs that you are purchasing will be on Hoffman frames which are not "Top bar". I think you did well by selecting the Saskatraz honey bee. Keep us posted!! To harvest "top bar" honey

Have you seen any Swiss or German bee sheds (aka Bee Swiss/German bee hotels, and Das Bienenhaus (The Bee House))? They look a little bit like the goat parlor out by the feeder, but they are filled with bee hives. They are designed to overwinter bees in harsh winter climates.

You might want to consider purchasing a biscuit joiner. Much faster and will eliminate making all those cuts for a lap joint. Stronger too.

Years ago I looked into and downloaded free plans for the WARRE hive. If anyone else is digging into options, consider this natural hive plan too!

Your new horizontal give looks good. However, the frames should be full size, and not short ones. The bees would add wax to the bottom rail, making the frame full sized. This would cause quite a mess.

Hi there. Love your channel. I’ve learned so much about building from watching your work. I live in Saskatchewan. I wouldn’t be too terribly worried about how cold it gets where you are in the winter. If the bees are coming from here they winter in -40c. I think they will be fine where you are. Thanks for your videos.

You should paint the base color of the hives diffrent from each other so that if there is an issue with the hives or an issue with the bees in the hives, or you need to get honey from one and not the other, it's easier for you guys to explain to each other which hive is needing attention. "Red hive has a wobbly leg, blue hive has honey for us" ect.

I am so excited you chose this type of beehive to make! Love the knowledge of Dr. Leo Sharashkin! Learned about him on Doug & Stacy's channel. Paint each hive a little differently, it helps the bees. Love your channel!

You live relatively close to the 'Master of Bees' (IMO) Michael Palmer - French Hill Apiary St. Albans VT. Michael has been keeping bees for 42+ years in VT. He successfully get his colonies through winter; which is really saying something for northern VT. We purchased two nucs - best decision we've ever made. These nucs were so strong; we could have split them the day we purchased. We've purchased Russians, Carnolians, Italians... never have we had the quality of stock that Michael breeds. check out Michael Palmer Sustainable beekeeping on youtube. Also highly recommend these channels: Canadian Beekeepers Blog and Little Bits Honeybees (Indiana).

Apparently white is normally used for the colour of a hive, which is good for reflecting the heat in warm climates, but a dark colour is better for when it gets colder as i does where you live,

Dr Leo and his horizontal hives, great design. I personally like to use the Warre hives (the peoples hive). Very simple and easy to build and cheaper than Langstroth equipment/frames.

I don't understand how 79 people can "not like" BEES OR PIZZA! Both are yummy, LOL. I can't lift heavy boxes with 1 arm so these new type hives sound like the perfect answer for my life. I have wanted bees for years. So exciting.

You could make two tops for the hive. An insulated one for winter and one not insulated for summer. You have to be careful bees don't get to hot in the summer. I know you have a big difference in temp between summer and winter where you are.

Al, I think that you’re going for a long hive, it is great. Though we cannot dictate the lives of future generations, we must do our considerations in generations. 500 years is a very short time, though many in our culture do not view it as such; they themselves think more than 5 minutes, that is eternity. Your hopes and desires ought to inspire 10 generations from now.
