@Free Speech I think Dr. Leo advocates that there are cover boards set above the whole colony, that way when you open the lid the hive it is still enclosed. You remove these small boards only over the area that you wish to inspect, this ensures that the disturbance to the bees is minimal. You can check for honey and leave the brood intact, or you can uncover only one or two frames at a time and check each brood frame without disturbing the whole. The use of follower boards is also advantageous. Check out some of the long langstroth hive management videos, they explain it very well.

Hello Al, I was watching your bee hive build and noticed you put three entrances into it. You should only have one at the end. You need to make a separation board that drops in like your regular frames. You can move it to enlarge their space as they grow. You might want to make a queen excluder also. This will make harvesting the honey easier for you because you don't have to worry about finding brood in your honey frames. Just a few thoughts to share with you to help. Don't forget to cut slats to fit on top of the honey frames . They lay on top of the frames in the same direction as the frames and cover the entire length of the hive and are between the frames and the top. Watch the video of Doug from Off Grid with Doug and Stacey, where he is setting up his new hives like yours . You will see the slats that I am talking about. I really enjoyed watching you build your hives. Bees from Saskatchewan should survive where you live as Saskatchewan generally has really cold winters.

Please plant clover and other pollen crops to feed the bees. If they have to fly far for it they will move their hives further away. Your little gardens won’t be enough to sustain them. Also make sure to have a safe water supply. The creek currents might drown them.
@madampolo4 жыл бұрын
If you ever get cattle, you'll need to fence off the beehives. Our cows get into everything and would easily knock over the hives. So, plan for that when you determine where to place them. Also, I've seen where beekeepers put the legs with water under the legs to keep ants from getting into the hive. I'm not sure how they do that, but you might need to do research.
