This has to be my favorite vlog from anyone for a while...I love that you share from your heart about life changes (and everyone has life changes from time to time). Once you do the Renovation...the value of this place will climb so easy -- and with possible future rental to beat...sweat equity is the best kind of growth for homes. There is a quote from a movie about an island (6 Days 7 Nights- RIP Anne) that applies here -- since your little city is an Island in the high desert -- "It's an island...If you didn't bring it here, you won't find it here.". The next little while will be so great for y'all because you are bringing Awesomeness there with you...Finding JOY in your JOurneY.

@@SUVRVing The hardest part of re-doing wood floors is getting the Home depot sanding rental machine into the house lol. Doing the sanding is easy once you get a hang of the machine (go with the wood grain). If you plan on staining the floors this might take two days+ to dry and then another few days for the sealant to dry (each coat). ** Make sure that you do not have your home electric heat on when re-doing the floor you can start a fire. Had a friend hire a company in the winter to redo their floors. When their heat kicked on it ignited the sealant fumes of the floor almost burnt their home down to the ground. They ended up with heavy fire damage. Talk with Home Depot/lowes and even call the producte manufacturer to see what a good option is to redo your floors in the winter time. It's a good project to do. You will be proud of your hardwork when it's done and you will save a ton of money. Good luck! Congrats on your new home.

As an old-time plasterer/painter who's worked on 100+ year old homes all my life I can assure you that you've got your work cut out for you. First thing is I hope they didn't use tons of 'liquid nails' adhesive behind that paneling. That's headache #1. Presume you're going to become real good at patching those walls/ceilings before you're done w/house. Start in the smallest room to get into the 'groove'. You're going to do those floors last so ignore that problem now and cover/tape down the floor with 3ft wide rosin paper/edge to edge. Tear all the paneling off (and ceiling tiles as needed). Scrape all the walls/ceiling and then prime everything. Now you'll see all the imperfections/cracks/divots. Get a pencil and a flashlight and hold the flashlight flat against the walls/ceiling and you'll then see EVERYTHING that needs to be fixed. Go around and lightly circle all the screwups. That's the end of stage #1. In your case I'd buy a gallon of pink Plaster Weld if lots of the plaster white coat is easily chipped off to the 'brown coat' which is the base coat of plaster. Use plaster weld on those spots and then go with 45 or 90 easy sand durabond in the white&blue bags for your primary/first coat of patching and use pre-mixed 'mud' aka topping for your finish coat. You'll get the hang of it. Buy some 5 gallon buckets for mixing/water bucket and buy a mixing paddle and drill. Buy a metal 'hawk' to hold your patching material while patching and get a set of 'knives' aka 10 inch/6inch etc. I use a 'swimming pool trowel' but for you the patching knifes will do. Good luck!

Having a base to come back to and you own it is always a plus. This winter it will be a very busy one fixing the inside of the house, hopefully the outside is well protected from any winter storms. Once you reach to a point of having a family life will change quite a bit, so it is good to start and build a base beforehand. In your videos you could even throw in places that are interesting to live in your travel adventures it could inspire some of the viewers through your lens. Happy holidays. Cheers.

White vinegar and water combo for mopping will take away those smells. I moved into a century house once also and the owner had raised dogs and the smell was awful. I mopped with that combo and in 24 hrs no smell. The stronger the vinegar the better but just open windows to air out the vinegar smell.

I'm a cat owner and have been for many decades. I know lots of people that own cats and even dogs. The thing is it's less the animal's fault and more an owners. Congrats. As always, what you're doing makes sense. I'm a total solar eclipse chaser among other things. My millennial kids and I watched the 2017 eclipse from the Grand Targhee area. They flew out just for a few days either side of the eclipse day, but I drove out a couple of weeks early, to do the preparations and scouting while spending about a week at the Holiday Inn Rock Springs! I did hear that it's the drug capital of SW Wyoming, but encountered no problems from that myself. There was a really good diner and pretty good buffet restaurant that I frequented. Anyway, I did a couple of scouting day trips from Rock Springs to Jackson and Grand Targhee, plus gathered supplies in Rock Springs at Home Depot, Walmart, etc. It worked out well. Our party of 4 ended up being among only 10 people watching the eclipse from a nice mountain at around 10,000 feet, chosen to put the Tetons directly under the eclipse. Hence two of the other folks there were pro photographers who had chosen that location for the same reason. While one daughter and her boyfriend went to yoga in Jackson a couple of days before the eclipse, her twin and I cached water near our chosen observing site, to avoid carrying water on eclipse day when lugging a lot of astronomy and photo equipment. Very fun and memorable times. We'll be viewing the April 2024 eclipse most likely in Texas, and bringing along my grandson. My daughter decided that the 2017 eclipse-trip boyfriend was a keeper. They got married in 2019, and had a kid in 2021. It's great seeing what a fine couple you are, just as they are. I have confidence that you'll continue to treat each other really well, which is the secret to success as a couple and a family.

Congrats on your new house. 12:49 If you could panel the lower half of all the walls with the type of wood paneling in that room, it would give the house a really nice old time authentic look. Because in the 1920s most houses had wood paneling on the bottom half of the walls. At the same time it wouldn't be too much wood, like that 1960s floor to ceiling wood paneling. You could still have white paint above the wood paneling. 👍

I'm jealous: your new house is 2 years older than ours (built in 1924). My husband bought it in 1987 and I arrived in 1996. We've remodeled/renovated for the past 26 years and FINALLY, every needed update has been completed. As my own father (1926-2004) used to say, "Kid, owning a house is a money pit." Who knows if you and Cassie will spend a lot of time living in Rock Springs (which I've passed by dozens of times in the past), but modernizing an older home requires a long-term commitment. I don't know that that's the NICEST wood paneling I've ever seen, but I LOVE wood paneling. Gives is an old-fashioned Sherlock Holmes kind of feel. 3) In your list of states, you left off a bunch of western states. It's great you went with two houses. More couples need that! But so often we're hampered by conventional notions of how to live. I don't know if you've read Sinclair Lewis' 1920 classic, _Main Street_. Near the end, the husband finally concedes that just having separate rooms for husband and wife is nice for personal space, even though earlier on he's sort of taken aback by how unconventional it is. Aren't married couples supposed to share the same room?? Kinda crazy how we restrict ourselves needlessly instead of building lives naturally around our needs and idiosyncrasies.

Listening to your description of Rock Springs reminded me of my past experiences living in a small town. Granted Rock Springs is much larger than the town in my story yet the move youre making made me think of it. In 1976 I graduated from Ohio State University with a degree in forestry. Following my dreams I applied to forestry related companies in the west. A company in Hoquiam, Washington asked me if I knew where Forks, Washington was. I of course said no. As I remember it the interviewer said good, you've got the job! What he meant by that later became clear but at the time I was elated. Forks is a town 100 miles north of Hoquiam since made famous for vampires but back then it was a little know city of 3,000 along highway 101 on the western side of the Olympic Peninsula . It was a logging town with Indian reservations nearby. Working every day in western Pacific forests of hemlock spruce and fir. Great hiking along old growth rainforest timber trails and salmon fishing with a beautiful secluded Pacific coastline nearby and next door to the Olympic National Park. What could be more perfect. However, I lasted only 6 months when thankfully I was offered a job at the company headquarters in Hoquiam. It was a stark reality check that I required a little more of what civilization had to offer.

We lived in Grand Junction from 2010-2017 and it was great. Lots of recreational opportunities in every direction. Would we live there again? No. The uranium that permeates the ground causes high radon as evidenced when we sold our home. We had to give the buyer a concession for remediation. It was like 3 times the EPA safe limit! So yeah its pretty but lung cancer is a problem in town and that is why. We are currently in Knoxville TN and will be moving to Boise in about 3 years. Your videos are a big reason for that as we realize we miss the west and its mountains. Sorry about your father, mine passed in 2007 when I was a Park Ranger in Oregon. Enjoy Rock Springs! We drove through there when we lived In Grand Junction to get to the Tetons and Yellowstone when I worked there in 2010 and 2011.

A bonus house! How nice! I may be wrong, but those ceiling tiles you want to pull out might be asbestos. You may want to have tested, or have professionally removed. My husband and I refurbished an 1880's ish home in SE Idaho. Paneling and asbestos tiles were used a lot in the 60s and 70s. Lots of older homes had refurbishments done in the 70s. We pulled a bunch of paneling in our home and removed dropped ceilings only to discover beautiful nooks built into the walls, and radius ceilings. Mahogany door frames were covered in layer upon layer of paint. You have a project, but not a huge project. Have fun with it!

So SUVRVing will be come a home renovation channel? I've been through a lot of that, you could certainly do the work yourself if you want to put the time into it. It takes a little practice to get good with drywall work but you have plenty of places in the house to practice. In my house we just had paneling removed from 2 rooms and then everything fixed up and painted. But I don't have the spare time so I had to pay to have the work done. Regarding the smell- you can buy enzyme-based products that will eliminate the smell. And a full basement! That's awesome, you could put your office in the basement. And another house where you could be a landlord, or have an airbnb. Here's my request- find out the interesting areas in northern Colorado, and particularly around Dinosaur National Monument, so I'll know where to go. Sorry to hear about your dad. It is not a matter of "is it windy in Wyoming but how windy is it?". Congratulations on your new home(s). A place you should check out is the Pawnee Buttes in northeastern Colorado, east of Ft. Collins.

I’m 100% unsurprised that you bought a 100 year old house using a “hub and spoke” model for being close to the things you love. I saw the video heading and said “of course he did.” When I watch your SUV RVing and fishing videos I always feel like we would be friends in real life because we share a lot of common interests and have the same personality traits…right down to our 100 year old houses 😂

I've been a landlord that owns old houses and allows pets for 30 years. Unscented MisterMax Anti-Icky-Poo (available on Amazon by the gallon) will get rid of the smell without doing further damage to the floors. Heat the house to at least 60 degrees, spread a thin layer on the floors and pour it down walls from the height a cat would reach. This gets the walls and baseboards and leaves a little puddled the in corners and next to walls. Leave it wet overnight, the next morning dry the floors or turn on a box fan and they'll dry themselves. You can damp mop with water if you want, but if you're refinishing and painting I'd skip that step. I believe the stains are urine. I've tried several methods recommended online, without great success, but I have successfully stained floors darker to match.

Now that you're moving to the Red Desert, You should visit the Sweetwater Rocks, in the Granite Mountains near Jeffrey City. It's a wonderland of crazy eroding, melting granite mountains, and you'll have it all to yourself. At the southern tip of the Sweetwater Rocks, right alongside Highway 287 and the Sweetwater River, you'll find Split Rock, a prominent peak that was a guide to travelers on the Oregon and Mormon Trails. Uranium mining was the only significant industry in the area, and jade was mined on a small scale as well. Jeffrey City was once a thriving mining town, now the dormitories that once housed uranium miners stand empty and derelict. There's an old uranium mill way out in the desert southeast of Jeffrey City. You can drive through the old neighborhoods in the town, and see dozens of empty slabs where houses once stood, for every one house that is still occupied in the neighborhood. Many of the houses were lifted off their foundations and moved to new slabs on the Wind River Reservation. I hope you find a piece of jade while you're there! You should also keep an eye out for the shell casings scattered around the Sweetwater Rocks. The U.S. Army Air Corps once used the area as a target range to train pilots. Spent brass casings are everywhere on the hillsides, as well as the steel links that helped the shells form a chain and run through the machine guns.

One peculiarity of Rock Springs is the enormous number of nationalities represented in the population. The town takes pride in it! During various periods through history, Rock Springs was hiring at times when other parts of the world were starving. Immigrants came from all over the world to find work building the Union Pacific railroad and in the coal mines. (Rocks Springs has a network of abandoned coal mine tunnels, scattered all over underneath downtown!) If you take a stroll through the cemetery, you'll get a sense for the geographic diversity in the population, just from the names on the headstones. They used to brag about the crazy names in the phone book in Rock Springs, but there aren't many people using phone books these days! I'm amused to learn that you've chosen to move to Rock Springs and you're happy about it. In my wife's family, they tell a sad story about poor Mary Bernard, back between the wars, when the depression in eastern Europe drove her family from a particularly beautiful part of Slovenia to find work in the mines. Mary stepped off the train in Rock Springs and took in the bleak landscape, with no forests, few trees at all, and lots of bleak sand and sandstone. She cried on the train platform . The town in Slovenia where she moved from, Skofia Loka, is a jewel of a town in a fairytale setting, on a mountainside in the foothills of the Julian Alps. I'm grateful that some of her family remained there and that they are still in touch with those who migrated! When the crying was over, Mary Bernard stuck her nose to the grindstone, and started building a new life in Rock Springs and the Red Desert. She married into a family of Croatian butchers named Radosevich, and soon she and her husband operated two butcher shops; one in Rock Springs, and one in Eden. To supply the meat for their shops, they also built a ranch on Little Sandy Creek near Farson with summer pasture near South Pass, at the southern tip of the Wind River Range. I hope to see drone footage from Adobe Town soon, now that you'll be so nearby! I imagine that a drone must be the best way to take in the majesty of the giant hoodoos, and the sheer magnitutde of the place. I'm really looking forward to see what kind of video you'll make there!

I lived in Green River for 3 years. Winters suck because of the wind but the summers at Flaming Gorge are awesome. You'll meet at least one friend who spends every weekend at the Gorge in their fifth wheel campers. A lot of great fishing in that area, Flaming Gorge Days is always a fun event, and I'd always float down the green river 3 or 4 times in the summer with a few friends. I'm a Colorado Native and live back in Denver now but I met a ton of great people in Green River/Rock Springs, I'm sure you will too.

Be wary about wall work in a house that old. Nearly 100% chance of lead paint and really good chance of asbestos (those acoustic tiles could also be asbestos). Stay healthy and especially if you're thinking about kids, you don't want any of that stuff floating around. You may be better off just painting over stuff.

Congratulations on the new house. Lots of work but it will be beautiful when you are finished. RE: the dropped ceilings. During the mid-60s to mid-70s, many owners of older homes with high ceilings installed acoustic tile because of heating cost. If it is like most, a grid was installed and the tiles dropped into the grid. Best wishes..

Utah Jeff …. Here ….. I am a rental property manager and to get rid of any bad smells is to use an ozone machine. Ozone kills 99.9% of all smells if it runs for 48 hours…. Ie. Pet smells , smoking smells etc …. A lot of carpet cleaning companies are now using ozone machines regularly…. Car dealers in Utah have used ozone machines for years

Go to your local Home Depot tool rental and rent a wall paper steam removal tool. Rent a square floor buff sander, it’s like a palm vibrating sander but for floors. Sand with the grain. I’ve worked at Home Depot for four years. I’m retired from teaching Special Education and computer technology

This is a great move for you! we've done something similar. We sold big house and moved away from city into a nonincorporated town that literally has much of nothing but is conveniently located to mountains, hikes, lakes, bike trails and full of history. It's dusty, windy with cattle, stray dogs etc. but nobody bothers us and we travel a lot as it is, therefore we don't miss anything. We also spend wy less money because there aren't any major stores nearby. It's an upgrade we've learned to value only over time. Have fun restoring. We gutted our entire place and redid everything when the beetle kill pine planks used to cost $4.95 a pice, good luck now.

Congrats on the house! Fatal mistake, though, being on the road so much... Cassie is used to having the house to herself and you'll be stuck in the guest house forever! :-) Your reasoning for why you picked the town you did makes sense, though I do hope that your new neighbors don't watch the video... (because of your lack of enthusiasm for the town). Hope the town ends up being more than you expect.

Tristan, I have great sign wording idea you can place on or near the small house "Tristan's Dog House" and in small letters below that ( Not a Crack House ) , I think you have a sense of humour to at least chuckle over such an idiotic suggestion ? , or perhaps Cassie will at least see the humour ! LOL.

Tristan...Im a retired flooring guy. YOu said the hardwood had carpet over it and cat pee smell. Those spots are likely the same! Major sanding on the hardwood floors and then a GOOD sealer! Then finish. The cat smell will come up if you dont seal it. Best of luck in your new home! wr
