Olá Blurewhitesishkebab, Let's see. For the kitchen, we used our remodeler to handle the work. We went to the local contractor's facility to choose the colors. Since most people only do white on the island, everyone was concerned with my color choice. don't worry they hated the open shelves as well... However, having designed multiple kitchens in the past, I was confident in my decisions. I opted for white counters, even though I love wood counters, to keep the space light since the small windows make it quite dark. We chose good appliances because we cook at home often, and we weren’t designing this as a rental. To get what we wanted, we had to use multiple sources like Wortens and Ikea. There is also a good six-week waiting time for anything that isn't basic. There are so many other details, from the floors and stair design to the air conditioning, and the list goes on. The process of remodeling and building will take at least twice as long as you think, so we recommend planning for that to avoid disappointment. Hope this helps!

Our friend bought a house there last year and is in the (slow, slow) process of renovating. I think taking longer since he visits just a few times a year and he says here is a Portuguese version of "Island Time" he didn't add into the renovation schedule. OMG! Two words: "house envy" I'm hiring you guys to do up mine just like yours! Are those green cabinets High Gloss Acrylic Panels or Solid Surface?! I love them. I wanted my bathroom in that green! For ages I wanted panels out of a company in Ohio called Innovate Building Solutions. Great products. Olá! Great to hear from you. The green cabinets are laminate matter finish the counter is a white gloss Silestone. We love it. The floors turned out great! As for the stairs that's what we chose. They aren't cheaper. We didn't set the program up for prepay. It will be ready by next week. So pop your email in. We will add in some online meet ups as we go. Leslie must have a great eye for the interior! The steps are the nicest looking especially color-wise I've seen but its the no backs that scare me. Reminds me of the steps leading up inside the back of church. I did sign up. My only issue is if it is too soon. I work mega hours and no time to exactly concentrate on one designated thing ie the move aspect. Hoping it will be something recorded to go back to or view on my own as time permits. Figuring I could always join in the actual group when my job is kaput and ready to get my personal issues done and getting ready for immersing myself in the plan. So not sure if that is how it could work by signing up or not but I did. That would work best for me currently as I was hopeful to repeat view it as need be which may answer questions not needing verbal repeat taking some burden off you and freeing me up to check out at my leisure till more fully ready. We also live in Santa Cruz...California. Houses begin at $1.2 million. We are 61 and 59, she was born on Terceira but came here in 1975, and has only been back once. But we've played with the idea of retiring there for all the same reasons. You didn't mention what you paid for the house, and how much it cost to perform that magnificent remodel, so I won't ask..but i'm so curious :)

The only only aspect of moving to Madeira and buying a home there which we can easily afford / is finding competent trustworthy contractors to make updates and improvements- even though we will be purchasing a home that doesn’t need alot of work . This is my only concern 🤔

Great video as usual. I love your new place and all the updates! I’m very curious, what are prices like for renovations? Similar to USA prices, or no? I love a good fixer-upper, but I feel I’d be over my head trying to do it in a new country! Was the process fairly similar?

Olá Meagan, The renovation prices were much higher than we would have thought. But they are less expensive than the USA. Some of that is they believe all Americans are loaded. So you don't get any deals. As for the process, it is much slower you will need patience. Double your time line. Doing it yourself other than painting us not the same at all. Buildings are concert not drywall, so we think you need to plan on hiring help.

Hi Good to hear you speak and host the show Wollfo, (although not as resonant as your dad). May I ask Home/ House /Condo? You call it a condo - because of shared walls / shared land or rates or is a free independent house? Would love to have approximate summary of costs - Original Purchase price + reno + purchasing costs to equal total $.

A lot less than most things in the island but more than you would think. If put on the market today it would be list in the 350k range.
