25 years also, I lived in an apartment and was happy to pay 30.00 to store christmas items and other stuff. 7 years later, I moved and when I cleaned out my storage, all I had was old clothes and empty boxes from electronics equipment. I wasted at least 2 years of money on trash!!

The storage unit companies have actually calculated the tipping point, after which people stop thinking the situation as a temporary storage and just keep paying because the thought of transferring the stuff either back to their premises or to a dump is too overwhelming.

Just before finding the old school bell, there was a red & blue sphere with a yellow handle. It was called "Shapo" and a child was supposed to place the different shapes into the appropriate hole. That I think was sold by Tupperware at parties and was out about 40+ years ago. Stab from the past for me!!😊

I’m glad you found the nice ring. People hate to throw stuff away. It may be junk to us, but it had some value to the person who saved it there. These odd time capsules are glimpses into another time where memories are tossed into forgetfulness. We could all use the reminder to store our memories and treasures in a way that those who come after us will be grateful to find. I’m working on clearing out my closets of boxes that aren’t relevant anymore. I’m donating book collections to the library and charities. That looks like either the person paying for the unit when they got locked out cut the lock off and took as much valuable stuff out of the unit as they could get. Or the owners/managers of the storage place went in and took good stuff. I would say either one of them would have to cut off the others lock to get once unit was foreclosed on. And some people have to move fast & can’t take time to sort stuff
@kikihammond5326
@kikihammond5326 3 күн бұрын
No, those cut off locks are from a prior time when they went to sell the unit, but the owner reclaimed it before the sale went through. Watch enough of these types of videos and you will see it a lot. Multiple cut locks are a sign that there is likely something valuable inside the owners don't want to let go, so they find the money to reclaim it and pay off arrearage before the sale finalizes.

The reason why the locker had a cut lock is because it was auctioned off before, the first bidder picked what they wanted and left the rest. This explains the mess. It's cheaper to lose a deposit than it is to haul and take to the dump.
@opaqueentity
@opaqueentity 3 күн бұрын
Most places wouldn't allow you to just leave stuff behind, you have to clear it allout in a set period of time hence why Alex rushed.
@genxthings
@genxthings 2 күн бұрын
@@opaqueentity I have over well 1000 units under my belt. Yes, you have a time limit when you actually clean it out and want your deposit back. The reason you leave a deposit when cleaning out is exactly for the reason if you don't clean it. When it's this much they just put it back up for auction. Do you really think people are standing at the door chucking their stuff into a locker? Losing a $100-$200 deposit or losing $60-$100 dump fee plus fuel, time, and labor is usually a good trade-off. When you do it for a living, it sometimes makes more sense to lose your deposit.

@ if you don’t mind never being able to go back there again sure. Not everywhere has a deposit or a cleaning fee you can be charged
@genxthings
@genxthings 2 күн бұрын
@@opaqueentity Correct, not all require a deposit, however I know plenty of people who have skipped cleaning, lost deposits and continue to go to the same facilities. That is the point of the deposits. Now I'll admit I don't know of anyone who has done that when a deposit is not required. That may be the exception, not the rule. I have been doing lockers on and off for 25 years. I'm pretty sure I know how it works.

That red and blue Shape-O-Sort ball is a Tupperware item for toddlers from the late '80's early '90's. It is worth $25. Not a big deal. This unit looks like it was from someone who died and their next of kin couldn't deal with it and just loaded up the truck without going through it and put it in storage. The game table likely uses standard diameter pipe. Remove the parts and replace the pipe. Conduit might even work. You can also straighten metal tubing by forcing a smaller diameter metal pipe down the center of the tube using a wood mallet. The ring may have paid for the unit, but did it pay you for your labor and other costs? The problem with buying such units are many: 0. You can't see much of what is inside, unlike a live estate auctions where you can see everything. 1. You have to put a deposit down that you only get back if you clean it out. So if there is a hidden chest freezer in the back you are going to need to haul that out and properly dispose of it or loose your deposit. 2. In some cases such units have been used by a business to dispose of waste material that would cost a large amount of money to dispose of. They could; for instance, fill the back of the unit with many boxes of expired chemicals. Paying the rent on the unit for a couple months before abandoning it will be lot cheaper that paying disposal fees at a state approved site. Now you are stuck with paying for the disposal of the chemicals or losing your deposit. 3. You might find other dangerous items such as loose live ammunition simply dumped into boxes that could go off. You could find guns that require a permit for you to own. The largest live shells at a live auction I've seen was a 50 caliber shell from WWII, just tossed in a box with a bunch of other items. At one estate a guy had tossed live 22 shells in one of the multi drawer sorters they store fasteners in. 4. The materials inside have been exposed to high and low temperatures, rodents, insects, humidity and other harmful conditions. 5. Items such as motorcycles will most likely not have a title and it can be expensive to get one. 6. The unit can contain stolen items.

I know its hard work, but it also looks like alot of fun. I love your positivity throigh anything, very inspireing. Is there churches that do church rummage sales for vets? Or animal shelters? Donating sellable items to yhem can go to great causes. I love that. I hope your hard work pays off bigger than expected for you and your better half. Have a great evening.

“I’m going to need the truck!” You also need to consider building a a pole barn on your acerage, to keep this type of work out of your regular garage and from the sorting clutter from getting in the way of the rest of your daily life. 😉

This was definitely a picked-over locker. Someone walked over the fooz-ball table numerous times, bending the tubes.

And across America storage units have become a "thing" billions of dollars in storage rental fee's. I would never consider renting one unless it was a temporary thing while moving from one place to another. When I worked for a non profit thrift store, the manager rented out a storage unit, then another then a actually store front just to store stuff that was donated.. If it had been me I'd have put it in our store, marked the price cheap and got rid of it instead of renting space to store them because it just kept coming and coming with the donations. Anna In Ohio

great vid. plus the fact that you feed the food chain that resellers use in the thrift store market for collectables and regular consumer replaceable goods, that's how canucks do it ... jes' sayin' ...

You do know that folk LOVE vintage Tupperware? I buy the 1960s & 70s stuff as it’s fantastic. I SO enjoy your videos. The women in your life gorgeous- I love the way they just stop and help. I was about to suggest a tripod for a camera so you had TWO hands free…and what did you find? I would keep the Nigella book, it’s excellent.

If you had been doing this type of thing when my x-mother law passed, I would have encouraged her family to contract you. Her house was packed to the ceiling in a few of the rooms. When I was able to clean out one of the bathrooms, I found envelopes with cash in them. There was a lot of vintage/antique furniture, china sets, fur coats, just to name a few things. I don’t know how the house was cleaned out before it was torn down. I was long gone by then

Great vid I usually have one of those old fashion keys for old doors on my key chain and you can use a corner edge to cut box tape.

What is wierd is the back of the unit looks empty compared to the front,then when you heard that noise that sounded like something large moving around back there it was very creepy,something is in there or a box fell down,very curious now what is in the back!Great video!

So if you buy the locker online, how do you know that the storage folks haven’t sorted through it and taken the good stuff before listing it? Might explain why so much stuff was loose and unboxed.

It's always amazing to me that even a hoarder like I am would keep 90% of that or pay to store it. Grandma's Christmas decorations and her plastic grapes are one thing, but most of that...oh heck no. The jewelry I'd cheerfully make room for! (at least until sorting and selling/donating)
