We revive an old go kart with a Tillotson 212cc engine! This old racing go kart is special, because the rider literally lays down in the seat, and is surrounded by aluminum fuel(?) tanks on either side. We were once told that these karts were built in the 1970s for large, oval NASCAR tracks and were driven in excess of 100MPH (in the 70s!!). We're planning on taking it to a proper paved track for a race against our other vintage racing go karts!
Thanks for Watching!

That vintage, it probably had a Mac101, aka a Mccollough. Beastly little 2-stroke (12hp! Iirc) when it got on the pipe. I'd slow down just to feel the charge when it came 'on'. That's an enduro-style frame, btw. Side tanks and the laydown seat are the telltale characteristics of a 70's era enduro racing kart.

Parilla or komet is a italian-american motor buider they also made airplane motors and have won many championships with these motors they was founded in 1968. When i was a kid we used one of there 25 HP airplane motors on our kart it would top out at about 125mph . I'm not proud of this but we used to outrun the cops in our kart when we was kids in the late 70's early 80's the could never catch us we would get so far in front of them they couldn't see us anymore and drive the kart right up under the porch or the barn and other times just pull up beside a building or car so much fun. I had one of those Mac 2stock engine with duel carbs on a homemade cart with airplane tires, that sucker was fast. The throttle stuck one day and I wiped out 100 ft of 2 rows of sweet corn before it stopped. (Had scrub brakes and no kill switch) I decided it needed a kill switch. Lol

back in the 70's a older neighbor of mine raced carts his cart was similar to your's but he ran twin 2 cycle engines .he told me it had a top speed of 120 because that's when he would chicken out but it was a lot faster than that . I could never get him to let me ride it but we took it out to a old unfinished sub division back in the day to tear up the unfinished streets and it was as he said scary fast even just to watch

@@Romans--bo7br Captain Jack and Ky are dear friends of mine and they will be attempting the world rocket powered sled record later next month with Kurt Andersons Arctic Arrow. Here are the motors I had in mind. These are 4" Aluminum 1/8" wall tubes with homemade fuel grains made out of fiberglass and weldwood plastic cement. The nozzle are made of Phenolic with a graphite insert. The motors are 12" long and would require a separate tank of n2o. A ball valve is used to regulate the oxidizer flow. I designed these to be 100% homemade. My dad raced cars and karts back in the 60's when I was just knee-high to a grasshopper. They as Mr. Kuhlman notes below, ran Macs. The story my dad had told me is he was friends with Mickey Rupp and they had clocked him at 120mph running twin Macs on one of Rupp's tracks. But ya that powerband of the 2 cycle made them things a real handful! Great video!

Back in the middle 1960s the first time I drove a gocart much like that . A racing cart said to go 75 mph . I am sure it would run at least 50 because the road we ran it on the speed limit was 50 and I had no problem out running the log trucks on that road. In hind sight my parents were probably trying to reduce the family size . I was 7 years old at the time the cart was wrecked when a friend had his little brother sitting on his shoulders blast done the driveway through the machine shed wall and into a Marsh behind . collarbones were broken and the cart was hung in the rafters of the barn

I'd tuck that throttle cable away before it gets snagged on a tree branch or bush, gets pulled out of its hold-downs, and brings the butterfly valve with it locking your throttle open. I also want to see that engine get built. A performance carb would solve the throttle cable issue too.

Double WOW!!.... an old endurance kart (aka Enduro Kart class) for a $100.... and Congratulations on your 500th video!! That's fantastic... now, for number 1,000 - Yes? All the "lay down" Enduro Karts were 2 Stroke powered..as were ALL Racing Karts back then. They had Three (3) classes back then if I remember correctly... 100cc, 135cc and 150cc and your Kart looks to me like it may be a Margay (but not sure of the exact year other than Late 60's to Early 70's)... which is one of the Few remaining Go Kart companies in the US still surviving from back in the day. Some of the enduro races were very long... 12 - 24+ hrs, and those large aluminum tanks on there indicates that whoever had it back then was probably participating in some of those longer race venues. My 2nd job (starting at 12+ yrs old, in the evenings & Saturdays during the school year) was working at new Go-Kart shop / store, that had recently opened where I lived, in 1962... setting up engines on new chassis, running them "in" on our engine dyno, etc, etc.. and wound up being able to race, as the shop received a team sponsorship from McCulloch ("Mac"), we ran 5 karts... all "Mac" powered of course, in various classes. All the various engines we sold in the shop, whether for cruising the Mall parking lots on Sundays (stores were all closed on Sundays back then), or for racing.... were ALL 2 cycle (American "Reed valve" design), Clinton, Power Products/West Bend, Homelite, McCulloch, and European rotary valve, Komet & Parilla, etc. They're still running the enduro classes. Back in the 70's, on the "long tracks" (road race type circuits) of the south west (AZ, NM, TX, So.Cal. and in Europe) these Karts (depending on engine class) were typically good for 80 - 125+ mph. Of course the modern Enduro class Karts are much more sophisticated with tunable chassis, much more reliable & powerful engines, full bodies on them for better aerodynamics, etc. Some of the "Super Karts" (shifter Karts) today (250cc) are running 160+ mph speeds... depending on the track & overall gearing of course. The "lay downs" did run some races on a few of the NASCAR tracks, such as Daytona... but the last time, at least that I know of... was back in 2007, but that's not to say that they don't now... I haven't "followed" them in recent years. For a while back in the late 90's and early 2000's there was an "outlaw class" of "Super (shifter) Karts" that were running at Watkins Glenn, NY and at Louden, NH.... seems they had two classes, 750cc & later an 1140cc class, and from what I read about them (back in 2004 or so), they posting track speeds at well over 200 mph... apparently faster & quicker lap times than the cars were. I don't know if that "outlaw class" still exists or not. I never ran the enduro class karts myself, just the sprints during the 1960's and later again between 1979 and 1983 under the WKF (World Karting Federation) rules. Love your channel.... reminds me of my younger years... Enjoy your youth, while you have it... it DOES go by Fast!! I'm 70 now... and thinking about going "riding mower" racing, as there isn't much for Go-Kart racing in this area where I'm living now. : ) I subscribed to your channel a few years ago... right after watching the first video that I found of yours... keep it up, your efforts are Very Much enjoyed and appreciated.

People still race karts similar to these, just with bodywork. They're called enduro/laydown karts and they're meant for road courses and ovals rather than kart tracks. Some people put higher-powered 4-strokes in them (for example, the Briggs Animal). These 4-stroke ones can do around 80 mph on a road course. Some people put 1x or 2x 100cc 2-stroke engines on them, and some people use 125cc shifter kart motors, which make around 40 hp.

Back in the early 80'sI bought an old Margay Enduro chassis and managed to install a Honda 250cc Motocross motor/trans on it. My own shifter kart (still have a picture of it) :-) That was some serious fun.

Almost bought a Kart similar to that back in the 90's at the WKA Northeast Regionals at The Magic Mile in Loudon NH. It had duel Dap 100cc engines it was impressive. These actually weren't that bad on the road course. The one I tried had been lengthened. I'm 6'4" and fit like a glove. Man was it fast coming off the course into turn 3 on the oval and down the front stretch. Yours might be a Hornet.

Along with some endure carts like this one and a few sprint emmick/bug/dinos. So much racing equipment for these classics. And a shifter 250cc cart as well. Had to say something jic! Love the video btw!

That is a really sick go kart. I didn't know they made lie-down go karts like that. I hope you restore it to its former glory, but then also have a separate performance engine for when you want to do runs. I imagine you'd get some crazy speed on that thing! Ya know, for your next project you guys should build something completely different... Perhaps an actual track on Ike's land? xD Or maybe some sort of vehicle or attachment for use on a track..? (i.e grader blade of some sort might be useful.) And then you could film a series around it. :)

These where called enduro karts, definitely pavement only karts. I remember seeing these towards the end of their popularity in the mid to late 70's. They had two stroke motors, McCulloch engines and later on they had Yamaha 125 two strokes. Sometimes they even had two motors. Running at speeds of 120 mph and more, you did not want to crash on one of these, especially with all that fuel 2 inches away from you. They had such big tanks because they did a lot of endurance racing via the name enduro. The thing that worries me is how close your right arm is to the clutch, with that big 4 strohe on there it does not leave much room. Cool to see one of these again.

It is a Meyers Lancer Bullet, built in Bellflower CA in 1974-75. Yours is a customer version with the fiberglass drivers compartment. A total of about 30 were built, with 10-12 like yours. the others were custom built from '72-75 for a particular driver/class/engine. They won 8 National Championships and ran in different classes from 100cc to 270cc (80+hp - 140mph). Two team Lancer Bullet drivers, who later became Indy Car winners, were Scott Pruett (100cc McCulloch 91B) and Kevin Cogan (100cc Komet K78 - 30hp - 14,000rpm, 110-115mph).

I don’t know I was asking my grandpa about this he said they got banned from a lot of tracks in the middle 70s in my grandpa said about 70 to 73 I don’t know how true it is but in his heyday they had a short life he ranks right up there with lawn darts also he said how are species they get super twitchy because there’s not enough weight on the rear

I remember when you guys picked that retro cart up along with 2 or 3 others if I remember correctly. This one was hanging in the rafters of someones garage I think. Just remeber with the fuel fanks on the sides im sure it was designed for the fuel in them to play into the handling in some way. Better figure it out and bring some weight to compensate if need be.
