In this USA vanlife vlog, we overcome the challenges and finally end up buying a vintage camper van in the USA (aka our holiday home on wheels). Buying a vehicle in America as a tourist was not easy but we managed to find some hacks which made the process a lot quicker and easier!
We are now the proud owners of two camper vans: one is located in the UK for Europe van life adventures... and the other is now in the USA ready for our Great American Road Trip to begin!
The rules around buying vehicles in the US as a tourist are different everywhere, so if you're thinking of doing the same as us, just be sure to check out what is required from your relevant State.

The two of you are just lovely and I’m so glad you’ve got everything sorted! The US has so much to see! We live in Northern California but I’ve lived and traveled all over. We love visiting the National and State Parks, especially the Redwoods. San Francisco is fun as is Lake Tahoe. I always enjoy getting back to the East Coast as well. Northern California is so beautiful but there’s something about a tiny midwestern town that has its own charm. Milwaukee, Wisconsin is a great city and Chicago has tons to do. Yay! Have a blast planning!

My mom has a similar 89 ford van sitting in my backyard, decent shape for it's age 100,000 miles I'm hoping to convert into a camper van. Wish I had a high top roof kit & extended rear (I was curious how many miles yours has?) Yours probably has the 351 V8 those vans are pretty reliable but have electrical gremlins from corrosion getting into wire harness connections. Sitting in Texas instead of rust belt Illinois it probably has way less rust & corrosion though. Example, my moms was having trouble starting/(fuel pump wouldn't stay running on/then off/then back on) the fuel pump relay (looks like large black plastic fuse, next to the fuses) had corrosion on it. Took it out, cleaned the corrosion off the terminals & harness, fixed for free. Also some turn signals & tail light bulbs didn't work because of corrosion. Cleaned them up & they started working. I'd check to see when all the fluids were last changed & change what's needed. Change the transmission filter, air filter & fuel filter if it hasn't been changed in a while. The rear differential gear oil always gets neglected & should be changed. These older vans are much easier to work on than modern cars. You can DIY much of it & save money by watching some YT videos. Like changing transmission fluid/filter is easy, power steering fluid,gear oil in rear diff,etc...Since modern oil, trans fluid & anti freeze is much better than it was in 1989 it'll help it last longer. I suspect if it has say 50,000 miles on it & you change all the fluids & filters needed. Then your only issues would be electrical gremlins from corrosion. Easy diy repair for that is just unplug & check/clean wire harnesses connections & relay, fuse pin connections/sockets. Also clean the corrosion off the terminals inside the distributor cap & rotor Sometimes the cap & rotor can have moisture/condensation problems in rain. It's an easy fix but hard to initially diagnose. Also there's a product called "AT205 Reseal" that actually works, might wanna add some to engine,trans,pwr steering & rear diff gear oil to help recondition all the old seals.

Wow. I wish it was that easy for a Canadian to buy a camper van in Europe. Have fun. In Canada, if you only do one thing, drive the Dempster Highway. It’s the only public road on this continent that allows you to drive to the edge of the Arctic Ocean for a very cold swim. You have a great vehicle and there are tons of places to wild camp with hundreds of kilometers (miles) of wilderness in every direction & the midnight sun. We had the best adventure there.

Pro tip: if you need to stop for the night while traveling there are rest stops along the freeway and also any truck stop will allow you to stay overnight. We have a 40' converted school bus so these are our options when we just need to stop for the night but with a van like yours you can park almost anywhere! Lucky!

You will definitely have some pretty great days, as well as some crappy ones. Smile 😃 and take them all in stride. And you WILL meet LOT of VERY, um, "interesting" people along the way. Take the good. Leave the bad. And you will be absolutely amazed at WHAT you LEARN!!! GOD BLESS YOU AND "FRANK". MANY HAPPY SMILES PER GALLON!!! 😃😊 👍

Have a shop do a very thorough check out of this van . These vehicles have set parked most of its life . It’s going to have dried out rubber parts like cooling system hoses and fan belts . Also the brake system should be checked for things like leaky wheel cylinders. These always go out at worst times - like when it’s 100f outside and you are 50 miles from Anywhere .

We bought a 1997 Ford E150 Custom Van. Built us a bed in the back. Put in a cabinet for clothes and storage. We have a portable toilet and no shower but we have bought a hand held one and open the back doors and have a tarp on top of them and a magnetic on both sides for a place to shower on nice days. We are 75 and 73 and nothing better than being Vintage with a Vintage Van. Just convert it to your liking as you go. Doing it slowly We have been satisfied and not changing things over and over. We have been doing this for 2 years and love every minute. No more hotel hunting when traveling as we have our room and kitchen (airfreight & grill) with us. The money we save just in those 2 areas means more places affordable to go.

In California you can go to many state parks in a camper van. There are some really great ones, especially in the north. You can also go to Forest Service camps. They might not accommodate your van in all places, but worth doing some research as they are usually in lovely spots. You can also book a stay at a Fire lookout through the CA state parks and you stay in an old Fire lookout with views for days....

From owning one yours most likely has a C6 transmission. Great unit . An external RV heavy truck transmission cooler would be a strong recommendation . This eliminates the chance of the existing cooler in the radiator from cracking and mixing coolant into the trans fluid therby destroying the trans in short order.

In a van that old it may be a good idea to replace all the AC components with new. I would also replace the water cooling and heating components. I did that in my '94 and it has been smooth sailing since. These old Ford vans can be really reliable if they are kept maintained.... One other thing, every plastic cable end on the door openers broke on mine from heat and age which will make opening and closing impossible. Since I was a machinist I made my own end replacements but a regular mechanic will probably make you buy the whole cable.

The great thing about those plates is that you have a permanent tag and will not need to renew them ever. Any vehicle over 11 years old can get permanent plates. Come to Montana on one of your trips and we'll show you around.
@badgerpa9
@badgerpa9 2 жыл бұрын
When you store it make sure you remove the plates from the outside so they are not removed for you. Make sure you have copies of the LLC and document showing you can drive the vehicle as part of the LLC, and the insurance lists you also. Some insurance companies will not insure LLC owned vehicles and if you store it in some states they will want you to pay the tax and license it there since it is there more than the months allowed in the state law. Multiple states went after people using the Montana LLC to license vehicles. States want the tax money, State Patrol watch for it. You may have issues taking it to Mexico or Canada.

One big advantage to the Montana LLC registration is that on a vehicle 11 years old or older, you can get permanent plates, like they have for Frank here. No need to renew registration, just have to keep your insurance up to date.

@@geoffmaloney2717 hopefully but not necessarily. My camper is heavy and I tow a trailer. I've had plenty of tire problems on the trailer, but I change the tires before I travel in the heat if they are even close to 5 years old. Too easy to lose control of a heavy and top-heavy vehicle with a blowout or if a tire comes apart. Being parked in a field like that sitting on one part of the tires for extended periods of time is not good either.

If you’re doing major outdoor trips go to more places than only National Parks. The National Park program is amazing, but there are a lot of State and County recreation areas that are just as amazing. They will cost less than National Parks and be less crowded. Two examples are the Black Hills in Custer State Park and the White Mountains in New Hampshire. Plus there’s already so much Content on national parks.

Your insurance will also have to be changed to the LLC which may require business, not personal, insurance. Also note that every state has a different requirement. Hi guys, Boycie UK here. Great adventure ahead. I would recommend Branson, Miami, Fort Lauderdale, New Orleans, Memphis, Nashville and everywhere else. Do Vegas and Reno too. I'm so jealous and need another US fix. I hope Frank does the job. Safe travels bean's 😜

Congratulations, Beans! Did you get the air conditioner checked out and fixed? Maybe taking the old Route 66 would be a fun trip. Best wishes and safe journey! Jay, Dracut, Massachusetts

You should actually go to Montana. It's beautiful there. I'm in canada, but pre covid, I headed to Montana every summer to camp, and spectate at a super fun horse event. If you happen to find yourself in Kalispell Montana on saturday July 23rd this year, I couldn't recommend stopping by Rebecca Farm enough, even if you aren't a horse enthusiasts (aka crazy person)

I would just reupholster the coach, change the curtains, paint all in clearer tones, etc.., but as for the overcab bed I think is not comfortable to hop in and out, so I would use this space for storage space and convert the current couch into a double bed like in your other van.

In terms of license plates and ownership, it depends upon the state. In most states, what you have stated in the video is true. However, in Texas, the license plates remain with the vehicle regardless of who the owner is. The only exception to this rule is if you have personalized license plates. Had you continued to register the van in Texas, you would have continued to keep the same plates that came with the van when you bought it. Either way, congratulations on becoming van owners!!

Get the Air Conditioner working, do a shake out trip close by. Then head North, it is too hot and humid in Texas this time of year. There are many things to see here. One might make you miss home, there is a thing called Car Hinge, North of Alliance, NE. Then take in the Black Hills and Devil's Tower.

Take a look at Grand Circle routes! I finally did it last year and it is an amazing experience. A national park pass is totally worth it if you will be driving around the West especially.

I saw your channel today and it looks interesting. If I can make one suggestion, get an "America the Beautiful Pass" it cost $80 and good for admission to National Parks and other federal recreation areas nation wide. You can get one at any National Park, US Forest Sevice, US Wildlife Service, ect. Camping in the parks is not included. It's a good deal when you figure a pass for just Yellowstone is $30.

TIP!!!! KEEP the registration certificate in the drivers purse or wallet! NOT in the glovebox!! That way if anyone steals the van they will not have access to those documents and you will!!! It will make it so much easier when dealing with insurance and any authorities about the theft and so much harder for the thieves!!!! NOT IN THE GLOVEBOX!!!

I wouldn’t do this personally. Just scan all your documents and save to the cloud so you always have access. You are more likely to lose it carrying it around with you.
