M. thank you SO MUCH for taking me to the zoo today! I had a great time. And thank you for saying "venomous" rather than "poisonous" in reference to the snakes. I can tell y'all home school. And I also want to thank you for being so free and open on camera. I loved seeing that brotherly kiss, and your dancing and how all of your children, even the teenagers, are so loving and kind to each other. Yes, I know that they are human and have their bad days too, but you can tell by watching that they are pretty laid back. What a refreshing change.

at the San Antonio zoo there was a white handed gibbon named Samantha. (I took my children to the zoo 4 times a week) I would start "calling" (a loud whoooop that gibbons make) as soon as I got out of the car. and she would answer, we would whoooop back and forth until I was standing in front of her enclosure then we would touch finger tips and I could watch her for hours (she was the oldest gibbon in captivity) one day she didn't call back and I cried all the way to her empty enclosure found her keeper and was told she passed that morning. the keeper and I sat on the bench in front of her enclosure and cried for what seemed like an eternity (about 20 minutes) I don't know why I'm sharing this story. Maybe just to let people know zoos are special, magical places.

My son volunteered at a zoo one summer, and it was an amazing experience for him. Every single week they gave him a different job - working in the greenhouses growing the animals' food, trash pick up, working the register in the little candy store, aiding the zookeepers. He didn't work directly with the animals for safety reasons. When he finished that summer, he had done so many different things that I think he has a more varied job experience than I do. And then he decided he wanted to be more hands on with animals, so he started volunteering at an animal shelter and has been there for over 2 years now.

since you home school your kids, the next trip to the zoo could be like a school lesson.. what country do elephants originate from, were do rattlesnakes live, that would be great schooling for all of your kids.
@BrettStubbs8 жыл бұрын
That's a very traditional "schooled" approach, rather than a true learning approach. Those quandaries come quite naturally if they are interested in the subject, and in a particular exhibit. If they don't care about elephants, they will just move on, or not retain anything you might be eager for them to learn about elephants. If they care about lemurs, they will naturally be drawn to read the signs, and google them when they get back home (in this case the RV).

Awe, I miss Houston. We lived in Splendora for a while and it was so beautiful ❤. I love the Texas mentality!! It's like they are their own country and people take care of their own. The leopard y'all saw was actually a rescue from a private home. He was extremely overweight. The zoo took him in and put him on a diet. When he walks, you can see all of the loose skin on his belly! His favorite treat is cream- the zookeeper will stand outside and squirt it into his mouth. He often stands with his front paws up on the side of the fence while he laps up his treat. 😊 He is always a favorite to visit when we go.. Houston zoo is the best!
