Light weight PVC or metal pole stock made into a low upside pen with chicken wire Top and Sides, attached with zip ties. Put skid's on the front of each side, with the front tip angled up to make it slide easier ? Maybe two middle skid's if large enough to need them. Tow it with the for Wheeler??? :-) Everyone is losing Chickens because the predictors just jumping or climbing over their high fences!!!! You get to figure out the opening to feed them that easiest for you???

Goooooood Afternoon , Al , Gina & Olivia , I learned something today ! I didn't know that you could buy Bumblebees. I have heard that they are actually better pollinators than honeybees. Of course honeybees also give us honey. Life is full of surprises with a Chinese wife. Ling had asked me if I wanted to have some pancakes for lunch ? I said , sure . I was expecting , you know , pancakes with blueberries and some maple syrup. What I was served were very thin pancakes made with chopped up onion tops , lettuce , and no maple syrup ! Tasty yes , but certainly not what I was expecting. No wonder she gave me an odd look when I suggested that she use some buttermilk to make the batter. lol In the garden , Ling also picks the male squash blossoms to pollinate the female blossoms. And then she brings the male blossoms into the house and cooks them for supper. Xaioling boils them I think. To tell the truth , I don't like them very much. She loves them. I've heard of the blossoms being dipped into batter and then fried. I might like that better than boiled.

I learned to pet our native bumblebees when I was a child, and they were gathering pollen from hollyhock flowers. Never been stung by one. They are so soft, not aggressive at all and will walk on people. No bee suit even when Dad and I raised honey bees, just veil. Loved it.

Chickens still getting out, we had a few and after clipping one side "short" (that is down near the flesh and bone area, they could no longer fly in a straight line, so could not fly over our 6-foot tall fence. So clipping and raising your fence would solve your problem keeping your egg layers from laying eggs elsewhere to attract critters, that may very well start killing your chickens. I like your operation and how you have created a natural loop ecosystem.

My hubby took an old trailer frame, built a simple frame on top with just a few cross pieces out of wood, then stapled a tarp over it. We let most of the tarp drape to the ground but cut one end so that it was halfway to the ground for them to get in and out. We pastured them inside a Premier electric fence. The first batch, we moved around the raspberry patch with one end in the shade. I attached a 14" x 45" bird netting over the other end to prevent aerial predators. The second batch we have in a more wooded area with tall grass inside to protect them from aerial. So far no losses and they were far happier outside than in a small coop.

Al, we have our meat birds in a chicken tractor AND they free range. We built a small door in one side of the tractor so the birds can go in and out, and they’re contained in an electric poultry fence with a solar charger. We open the door every morning after we’ve moved the tractor and shut them in every night for safety. Gives the birds the best of both worlds.

Al I've never seen watermelon raised vertical like you. in Alabama we grow them on the ground . it seem like it vines would break from the weight of the melons
@cayhaughey11264 жыл бұрын
You could always do an experiment with the meat birds. You have many that were raised in the tractor, so it would be easy to see which tastes better, and is easier to process, and which ones are larger. I'd assume that keeping them in a smaller area would lead to larger birds, and therefore more meat, as they're burning less calories to get around. And in the tractor they're definitely going to be cleaner! I wouldn't be surprised if they -do- already get grasshoppers in their tractors. I'm excited to see what works best for y'all!

Thank you for sharing your life with us. I look forward to the videos each day. As to the free ranging your meat birds or for that matter any of the chickens I will share what worked for me for the years I raised from 15 to 40 chickens on my small farm. I built a approx one quarter acre enclosed chicken yard with the smaller chicken wire. I turned it outward about a foot at the bottom so no predators could crawl in under the fence. Here's the key to this yard. Within the yard I placed randomly spaced upright poles throughout the yard. I buried the posts approx 1 foot so as to stand up on its own I placed wooden 1 x 4's at the top from each to each until I had the entire yard crisscrossed with these. Then I stretched the small chicken wire across the top of the entire yard and fastened it to the boards thereby covering the entire chicken yard. I made the enclosed area high enough for me to walk under the overhead wire. This is a permanently enclosed area which the chickens will eat to bare ground in a short time. The chicken house was inside the enclosed area. In all the years I never had a predator enter the yard.

1:04 What about creating hot panels? You want them to be be tall enough to make the predators have to touch the panel to get over it and energizing them would dissuade even a bear from trying to climb it. So take a couple of cow panels, or turkey wire, turn it on it's long side, then create a wood frame around 2 panels. Put hardware on the panels so you can drive a t-post through, then clip your hot fence wire (like whats around your pigs) to each panel. The wood frame would keep each panel from grounding out too. My great uncle was a horse rancher, and did something like that years ago to protect his chickens from raccoons, coyotes and feral pigs. He also had "hides" setup for the chickens to duck into if spooked. Worked great, and I know for a fact that it hurt like hell if touched. He even had the gate into the pen energized.
