Well guys it’s another late one, with us finding it hard to have enough hours in the day I manage to tell you about today’s gossip. I inform our Landrover customer it was probably a scam he was getting into!

Years ago I had a diesel defender four pot come in running rough. He regularly went off road and through water but the vehicle was in good order and regularly service. Checked timing and it was way out, bottom pully was difficult to remove because somehow the keyway on the end of the crank was totally mullered. Priced up crank or getting it machined but the cheapest repair was a short motor with Land Rover guarantee. Customer kicked off big time calling me a rip off merchant, got an independent engineer to come round (without asking or telling us) and when he looked at the cost of stripping, repairing (if it was possible) machining and rebuilding it we were correct in our suggestion. He now accepted we were right and was quite happy, became a regular customer. The danger of these companies saying they’ll do the job cheaper is that you may well get someone else’s engine fitted rather than yours repaired.

Be careful of the relationship with your "regular customer" as they'll change colour at the drop of a hat. Just his attitude at the front end, I'd have told him to shove off, calling me a rip-off.

I've been a machinist for 40 years and there's nothing I love more than machining engine parts. I spent 7 of those years machining billet cranks for race engines.

The engine stand on that Lotus engine is sweet. You could get your local fab shop to build similar stands for Cossie engines, then sell them to your customers, as a way of protecting the completed engines during shipping.

Agreed. They don't have to be neatly finished like this one - bare metal would be fine. The side hoops/handles should be universal with only the bits that pick up on the block changing to suit the use.

Charging an additional 2k just because the head's been off makes me very suspicious of their intent. Beware working with anyone other than directly with your customer. You already know he's not invested in good maintenance, so if something goes wrong, you're his whipping boy.

Reminds me of Heathrow Engines, they used to demand an exchange dud engine, then painted an old non-rebuilt engine, and fitted it as an overhauled engine. I used to supply tooling to Perkins in Peterborough, and one day I was told that if I was quick, there was a skip load of Mahle pistons destined for the Iceberg engine project, and now cancelled. Security would not let anyone help themselves, but a lot of engines went out throught the back door then. Its all in old issues of the Peterborough Evening News. Sheds in Whittlesea full of crated engines with no engine numbers. WE had ten tpns of engine compnents which had no paperwork we could not send back.

Ive been out to cars that have broken down on their way home from the dark depths of Birmingham's back streets, the workmanship was awful, wires and cables left not clipped in, coolant hoses not routed correctly etc etc. I always spend a minutes looking around at stuff like that when ive done head gaskets and the like. Yep sounds like a scam,.

Are you sure that the 4 cylinder bearings are different that the 6 . It’s worth a look . Landrover won’t give you anything for either the 4 or the 6 engium engine. But I was watching salvage rebuilds and rob got the part number for the shells and then phoned up Landrover’s with the part number and he got the shells . I thing everything will be the same on that’s got 6 cylinders

Scam .... Absolutely right , and it happens everywhere. Usually automatic gearbox "specialists" are the worst . With commercial / 4×4 diesel engine "specialists" not far behind. A genuine business has no need to offer " much cheapness , best price my friend" discounts .

9 out of 10 times if it's too good to be true it usually is. I got lucky once got a killer deal on a transmission overhaul everybody says I was getting ripped off. But I got lucky 6 years later and 200,000 MI still shifting great.

If you find it hard to get parts, dealership don't offer full selection of parts on a late model vehicle alarm bells have to be going nuts that the company can access all parts. BE SUPER AWARE i say
