Who is advising you on the route? You are going all the hard ways. You rode past my house so I know these roads. You should have done the Mae Hong Son loop which is one of the best cycling routes in the north of Thailand and then gone down to Mae Sot and then cut across and down to Bangkok. Anyway riding is always an adventure so enjoy.

The Doi Inthanon climb from Mae Win is crazy. Anybody doing that would have a serious hard day. The MHS option or climb from Chom Thon would be a bit more doable....

The mountain roads in northern Thailand will be crazy steep in parts and you will need very low gearing if you wish to go up them with bags and an averagely fit body. Also there is no need to carry too much water and food as there are restaurants and convenience stores along the way. anyone who wish to cycle Thailand can DM me. More than glad to provide pointers and help. Thailand is a wonderful place for cyclists!
@madpeddler8263Ай бұрын
Exactly, why cycle across the central plains which will be boring and likely dangerous? Make the north a base with a proper road bike and explore the hills of Chiang Mai, Chaing Rai and Nan. Just wait until they ride out of Bangkok down south where they will be stuck on the main highway most of the time. And Phuket would be a good place to ride, but not during the high tourist season.

I feel so badly for James. While a tough day on the bike is better than most other days, there's a limit to how much suffering you can take. Hopefully he'll feel better and be able to enjoy the rest of the trip.

Sorry to put a downer on this, but lack of training/fitness may not be James's issue. A lot of people would prefer to think they've had colds, flu, chest infections, pneumonia etc, rather than utter the C word. Is it possible that he has Long Covid? It is more common than many realise. If so, this trip could do quite a bit of damage to his long term health. I wish you all the best.
