Our Journey! How did we get here?
In the winter of 2019 we moved in to our self built van full time to begin living, working and travelling Canada. We quickly fell in love with chasing our dreams of adventuring off the beaten path, living off grid and being self sustaining. We drove our van thousands of miles through various countries-Canada, USA, Mexico & Guatemala. All of which we documented here on our channel, be sure to check that out! After many years on the open road we found ourselves 15 acres of remote woods on the East Coast of Canada where we are building a homestead and renovating our fully off the grid cabin. We are diving into this chapter of our lives in no experience, we're so happy we can bring you all along as we learn to do it all with our own two hands. Both! Put the hard shell inside the soft, then it doesn’t fall apart. Bonus points: melt a thin layer of vegan cheese or refritos on the soft so it adheres well to the hard.

@Arctic Acres, They have the topsoil against the outer wall. I believe water will get trapped between the 2" insulation and outer wall panel. In time this will cause the outer wall panel to rot. Your thoughts on this??

​@@kennorman3586 Great question! This design has been tried, tested, and refined for decades across North America. The foundation wall is treated and sealed with those thin sheets of skirting which help protect the foundation from moisture. The cedar wood in this dome is also naturally resistant to humidity; the same wood often used to construct saunas. Our fan system and the tape sealing on the outside of the dome helps in climate control as well, and keeping the dome water-tight.

A hint I learned about pounding in those foam panels without breaking them is to place a board along the length of the edge you're forcing in and hit that board with the hammer. It spreads out the force of the blow and better seats the foam board without damaging it.

@@Vanwives Can I suggest when moving heavy loads, such as garden soil or crushed stone, with the wheelbarrow, try pulling rather than pushing. Pulling the load behind you requires less energy than pushing. The difference may not be all the great per individual load but over the course of many loads the energy saving is considerable.

You may want another entranceway in front of the existing door to stop massive amounts of cold air forcing their way into your greenhouse. Hi Girls! As a fellow gardener and I mng. A garden center for years.... I believe your veggies need a bit of fertilizer, you can also put your coffee grounds and banana peels (potassium) under the mulch around the plants, sprinkle some of your grass clippings also for nitrogen🌿🌿🌿😍also around your flowers too, until your compost bin gets running and producing .❤️

You guys did a great job with the dome! I recently saw another KZbin channel where they build the exact same dome as you guys did. The one thing that they did that I think you guys might like was that they put this aerospace-engineered tape on the seams and the screws on the outside panel so that the dirt wouldn't get into the layers and the rainwater wouldn't get in as well!

I built a geodesic dome out of PVC several years ago for green house. I normally construct my PVC greenhouse in a long rectangular shape. 12w x 20L x 9tall. My beds are 3 feet high so filled half way with compost material, dirt, branches, green and brown materials then my organically rich dirt I make. Basically I build large compost beds, then grow in them making them raised beds I don't have to bend over. Broke my back along with a bunch of other bones and had collapsed lung when my Arabian mare bolted and slipped. Care-flite for me broken to pieces at age 57. It's slow going for me now,but I'm doing it!!

Hard in the soft, chalupa style... PS we painted our pool/pond outside wall black to work on maximizing the heat/cooling in the winter/summer... our neighbor painted theirs in black also but with a paint that their kids could use as a chalkboard. It is so fun to go into their dome and see what the kids draw on a rotating basis!

I have been out all day, that is why I am late posting, You two make a perfect end to my day. I couldn't imagine there is a happier couple. Your greenhouse is amazing, where have you got all your ideas from, they are so smart. I most of all like the ventilation, you need that to stop plant deceases cause by damp air. You grrrrrlz remind me so much of me! I'm 64 but am building my cabin in the rolling piney woods of SW AR. My friend, Linda, did the plumbing and I'm doing everything else. I also garden in an organic, permaculture hugelkulture way. Y'all are just like younger versions of me! I love it. Grab some cinnamon basil to grow in there. The aroma is to die for. I love it so much I rub it all over me, lol. Also called Thai basil. I'll send you some of my seeds of you can't find any.

Since you have water in the greenhouse, and the temperature will be regulated - the center would be the perfect place to put a wonderful stand-alone bathtub!!!

You guys are killing it. I was so happy to see your genuine smiles when that water system came to life. The greenhouse is off to a great start, and all that hard work is paying off. I know big jobs like this can be brutal both physically, mentally and also hard on a relationship, but you seem to be handling it like champs. Keep up the good work. You are loved by strangers....trust me, I'm one of them.
