Mazda is one of the only manufacturers that is still pushing ice engine technology to achieve better emissions/efficiency. They also produce far far less cars than someone like Toyota or vw. It's pretty amazing to me that are still managing to do as much r &d as they do on their sky active range etc. I don't think electric is part of their current MO.
@TheSonic101604 жыл бұрын
Mazda reduces more emissions by improving the engines of their entire fleet, rather than focusing on building an electric car while their engine technology languishes. They are a small company that can't afford to do both.
@harrisj674 жыл бұрын
Obviously not the only one!
@harrisj674 жыл бұрын
@Matt M. Hmmm...a bit of a cop out! If a company can inplementa a whole charging system bassed on an electric drivetrain, I am pretty certain a system for recycling the materials used in creating batteries can be implemented with a little bit of thought. Also, how long do these batteries take to fully be useless? Seems to be a long time; car batteries last as long as the car and can then be repositioned as home/commercial electrical storage systems! Unfortunately, companies such as Mazda, will be too slow to change, and may be a casuality of the move away from ICE technology. Tough times for the car market. Love to see more car manufacturers open their eyes to offering EVs.

Sounds like a great conversion. Unfortunately, conversions like this are still too expensive. The cost for this conversion would be around $25k (US), including the car. But I'm a technology fan and I'll probably do an electric conversion on a 1970's land yacht, so I appreciate your expertise. I figure an electric conversion can't ruin a car that's already big, heavy, torquey, and saddled with an automatic transmission anyway. I'll hang on to my manual transmission sports cars with raspy and engaging ICE power as long as I can. Again, all the best, from an electric car hater! ;)
@Irishrebel0924 жыл бұрын
most of the time with electric conversions, with Li-Ion awnyways, you end up with nearly the same curb weight if not lighter. the battery pack here should end up around 280lbs and the 1.6L they took out is 272lbs, the electric motor is 120lbs, and the transmission they removed was 110lbs. so right there they only gained around 20lb, and with all the other stuff they will be removing, like the fuel tank that weighs 72lbs when full and all of the exhaust piping, they should end up +/- 50lb of the original weight of the car.

I teach at the Workshop School in West Philadelphia in Pennaylvania, US. It's a project based learning HS which is part of the Philadelphia Public School System. We have an after school group called the EVX team that builds electric and hi-mileage cars for competition. We are kind of doing the same thing but in a kit car called the Catfish which uses a tube frame and fiberglass body but Miata mechanical components including the front and rear subframes. The Catfish will be significantly lighter than the Miata when done so it should out accelerate a standard Miata. For our first iteration, we had an electric motor and controller that we had used in a previous conversion of a Ford Focus. We had it mostly finished when we decided that we would get significantly better performance...we plan to compete in autocrosses in the Philadelphia area...by using the power train from a Nissan Leaf. We had purchased a wrecked 2018 Leaf and removed all the components we wanted to use when the Philadelphia Schools were closed by the Coronavirus quarantine. We will follow your project with the students to see if there are ideas which we can use. The Nissan uses an electric power assist for the brakes and steering so this project has me thinking about how to adapt them to the Miata suspension.

I think it's fine folks perform EV conversions on older sports cars, but when it comes to driving fun, it's like watching movie without sound. Sure the cinematography is impressive, the computer graphics incredible and the actors expressive and heartfelt, but without sound, it's not complete. Gas-powered sports cars require involvement with all four limbs to manage the clutch, brakes, throttle, shifter and steering, and once they're combined with sound and vibration, you've got the full experience. It's the 7.1 Dolby surround sound that completes the picture! Bear in mind, I own an EV and it's a terrific appliance in every sense of the word. Great driveability in traffic, quiet, handles well and saves a lot of money compared to gas. But I wouldn't want it in my sports car... no matter how fast it was. Sometimes a little visceral around the edges is just what the doctor ordered.

You say that but my electric r32 skyline is brilliant fun. The motor is quite loud it’s like a supercharger plus so much torque. I think unfortunately and fortunately depending how you look at it everything will go electric ⚡️

I have a 99 NB and someday plan to convert it to EV. I was planning a transplant from an existing EV but still very interested in how this turns out.

I would love to have an MX5 again but I won't have another ICE car. Will be interesting to see how this goes, especially the final corner weights.

it seems you're not really upgrading the power level. It'd be interesting to see how the power delivery characteristic affect performance.

I have used the chassis and a pipe frame kit off one of these, just take out 6 bolts and the body lifts off. Will be following this, cool idea. Just easier to do suspension rebuild
