She's so gorgeous! One of my cousins rescued a monitor lizard from his friend's apartment - they think someone had abandoned or lost it because it was malnourished and had scars. But my cousin has been taking really good care of it, and just built it an enclosure very much like this one! And he definitely has a good bond with the lizard, taking it on frequent walks and letting it swim in the kiddie pool :)

I've defintely dreamed about it! We could upgrade and enlarge all of their enclosures if we could afford an expansion. It would be a huge undertaking financially and structurally, though. I don't think we could fundrais enough with everything going on right now, but maybe we'll be able to in the future!

How often do you expect to have to fully change out the substrate? Or do the bugs act as a bit of a clean up crew for waste?
@Tinyvalkyrie4104 жыл бұрын
I’m not animal wonders and I don’t know their procedures, but with a bioactive enclosure like that you should only spot clean. If you do a full replacement of substrate you would be destroying the established ecosystem. Obviously there are limits to that and sometimes it doesn’t work out, but that is the goal generally.
@animalwondersmontana4 жыл бұрын
Yes, the bugs are the clean up crew and do the work for us! With a large enough colony of worms, pill bugs, and springtails we should hopefully just have to keep it watered, replant when Jade destroys things, and sit back to watch the cycle regulate itself 🤗
@Dachdogoriginal4 жыл бұрын
Very nice enclosure. Do you ever swap enclosures occasionally with other creatures so they can explore, get new smells as they would encounter in the wild? Or is that risky? Just curious.

Mad you admit you let her go a little..it’s all very well rescuing..feeding alone is not enough for most animals especially when kept in a smaller than perfect in closure..I’ve been looking for a perfect cage for my harlequin macaw chick..I renovated the apartment for him so he has his bird room but I still feel he would be better having something to sleep in and eat in...and poop in if he so chooses..but he has a poop perch...

Catherine, were you ready for the pandemic? Animal Wonders is doing an AMAZING job just staying afloat because they WERE ready for many different types of traumatic events. But they weren't ready for NO volunteers or employees not being able to work for MONTHS! Don't forget that they have several young children that need care also. They actually built on instead of spending time with Jade because in the end it was more important for Jade! I think Jesse's honesty is amazing. She tries to keep things as transparent as possible. I'm glad she was able to get some help from her family.

Monitors are cool. They always seem to be a brighter than your average reptile. Where do you actually get isopods?
@animalwondersmontana4 жыл бұрын
They're so smart! We got our isopods from a variety of places. Some were purchased a years ago when we first started transitioning our reptiles over. Those colonies thrived so we use them to start new colonies in new bioactive spaces. We needed quite a few for this project so we took some from existing colonies and also harvested some wildlings from our garden. They're thriving!
