Sunny is so beautiful! I always appreciate your frequent reminders that many of your animals don't make good pets. We have no pets at my house (we lost our sweet dog to old age a couple years ago), and the temptation is strong to get somethings small and cute. The truth is we don't have the time, space, or funds to properly care for an animal right now. Thanks for sharing your animals with us!

E J I was in a similar predicament when I moved to a small (500 sq ft) apartment. In the end, I got a bearded dragon and I couldn’t be happier. Reptiles don’t need a ton of space and they don’t make a lot of noise or smells. Different species are different kinds of interactive. Ziggy loves to run and around the apartment, and will also sit on your hand or shoulder. The main difficulties are diet (insects and salads) and heat/lighting. I reccomend KZbin channels Clints Reptiles and Snake Discovery to find out more about reptiles!

@EJ I understand this feeling completely. People say that I must hate dogs as I have a cat I dearly love. But the truth is I love all animals, and because of that realize that a dog would not have the best life it could in my small apartment, especially since there are times I am out for most of the day. My cat, Myla, doesn't mind this as the apartment is big enough for her to roam/find a good napping spot, and as long as I am home at night (and I keep feeding her), she's contented. I sometimes watch these videos and think how great a bird would be, but I have watched so many responsible owners show how much work, funds, and care they take, and as I mentioned I have a cat, so I know it wouldn't be fair. It is an honorable choice, to be honest about your ability to have an animal, and I hope you get into a position to have one soon :).

I like it when she mentions that kind of stuff. I now know that hedgehogs have very sticky poo that they often roll in and it dries like concrete. Sugar gliders pee on you. So many cool animals but terrible pets.
@kagehikari42814 жыл бұрын
@@aleciastar1433 Indeed. Most animals are more than people realize and theres no "easy" pet. EasyER yes. Even with goldfish. It really is disheartening to see people want animals just because of what they see on tv or social media or because they think there cool/cute or easy and then that animal usually winds up being abandoned, re homed or dies from neglect or just lives out a miserable life. Its important to keep getting the message out there to do the research first and not impulse buy and really examine ones own life to see what even fits. Not force the animal to fit or expect family/friends to step up when you cant or that collages will allow you to move in with it. Most collages dont. That rarely ever works out.

Wow, I really needed to see targeting takes time! I'm trying to target train my Linnie Kiwi, but he got aggressive and angry at the target stick and millet reward :(. It's hard to target train when he's aggressive when you try to hand him food lol. Maybe I should stick with it though and he'll improve. Thanks for another great video Jessi!

Try looking up the KZbin channel BirdTricks (Jessie did a collab with them a while back). They have LOTS of really informative videos on target training parrot-type birds, including tips on dealing with issues like the bird responding aggressively to the target. They also put up videos of them working with difficult parrots to target train them, so there's also lots of real-life examples to watch.

She’s so beautiful! Would you by chance have tips on what is useful to teach a horse? I love dog training and want to train my new horse in some of the same methods. I think it would be good to help establish trust and give us something to do besides riding.
@Tinyvalkyrie4104 жыл бұрын
Just do some research on ground training. Unfortunately horses are harder to train with classic treat based training because of how they make associations. For me at least, have had very little success with clicker training with my horse. Other more horse specific methods work better. I have my horse do a lot of movement based tricks like turn on the fore, turn on the rear, bow, step up on pedestals, open and close gate, yo-yo, etc.

Why would you want your bird to bite a stick? I mean, awesome but, why? wouldnt it be better to teach something kind of more useful?
@erin17774 жыл бұрын
I think the idea is that you can eventually use the stick to guide the bird over longer distances, such as into a crate. That ultimately makes it easier to care for the bird as well as teach it other more useful behaviors.
@NinaDmytraczenko4 жыл бұрын
Targeting is a very versatile behaviour, Jessie uses it to guide the animals to other movements
@PonderingStudent4 жыл бұрын
Target training is what trainers use as a kind of baseline behaviour and its actually very useful. It's very easy to teach, so if you teach it as a first skill, the bird learns how training works (ie, the trainer gives a cue, the bird does a behaviour, the trainer saying 'good' or a click = they've done what the trainer wanted, they get a food reward). That makes it easier to teach more complex things, as the animal already knows how the whole process is supposed to work, with a mental link between a cued behaviour and a reward. Second, you can use targeting as a bridge to many other skills. Suppose you want to teach the bird to enter a crate. You can put the target stick through the bars of the crate, so the bird has to go into the crate to touch the target. Because it's a behaviour the bird already knows how to do and they want to earn the reward, they're much more likely to willingly enter a crate this way than if you just try to put them into it. Or if you want to teach them to jump onto an audience member's arm at public presentations, you can hold the target so the bird has to perch on the other person to reach it. Or teach them to spin around by making them follow the target in a circle. There are so many ways you can use it. If you're interested, a KZbin channel called Bird Tricks did a collab video with Animal Wonders a while ago which talks about why you should target train an animal and the many ways you can use it, with examples from several different species.
