I studied architecture at University of Cincinnati and still actively work with remodeling and designing homes. The common thing I often see is the lack of air tight sealing of the home which provides huge long term benefits, followed by lack heavy of insulation. other things that would be interesting at this point would be humidity management, air filteration, advanced water systems (filtering, recycling ect), use of solar for not only power but heat / hot water collection, bonus points for concentrated solar setup. I didn't see a garage or port with the house, many other upgrades really depends on location.

high perimeter to area ratio (check), lots of glazing (check), practically no eaves (check) = Modern Architecture indeed. Even in a forgiving climate like Austin, the owners will be at the mercy of active cooling (AC) 6 months of the year. I would have aligned skillian roof to face south to maximize solar gains and employed generous eaves to keep the thermal loading off the mass - perhaps with north-facing clerestory windows to increase the internal cross ventilation. Smart houses used traditional design principles first, and active systems to increase efficiency second.
@nicholasreceveur80826 жыл бұрын
I guess my point is this: While the early modernists certainly had valid grounds to break from the stagnant cycle of neo-revivalism and seize the potential of technological advancements, today's context is far different. Our resources are becoming ever more finite, thus we would be foolish to turn our backs on the genius of past minds without becoming bogged down by convention. And let's face it, a box house is practically modern convention anyway.

I don't see this concept as eco-friendly This is great though. Why can't we use GFRC panels instead of a wood framework? I mean why to use wood anyway, why to cut trees if these can be done by other alternatives which are eco-friendly, stronger and even cheaper than wood.

House Stark yes I pointed out that I confused the two. But Tesla has announced working on a pick-up truck. Elon even went to Twitter to ask the public what they wanted to see happen in a pick-up truck, which is where I saw the numbers I mistakenly confused. There's at least 2-4 years though before we see anything official. Let's just hope it lives to the hype. It would be quite a move forward.

I'd just be happy with a cabin in the woods, I'm simple. Oh, & fiber optics with some rack servers.

Having built 12 homes for myself, and incorporated every "latest" technological advance since the early 1990's; Ive discovered that the best innovation is a very high MTBF. The cost of equipment and the subsequent wear and eventual failure can almost approach the value of the home itself. Having a high Mean Time Before Failure (or obsolescence). Integrated - this, and internet connected - that is flashy and cool, but the software and hardware support for such connected-ness is a continuing cost of effort and cash. It is better to make the house more 'self-reliant' and add the cool functionality to the persons occupying the home. Personal equipment can more easily be upgraded replaced or eliminated without the expense of upgrading the home as well. Previous homes I've built have miles of unused cables, routers, etc, that became useless once wireless technology became commonplace. Bluetooth is now eliminating many of the previous era WiFi devices. Nice show, er-rather Showcase, since this appears to be more about the gadgets than the building. Having done the one show on how to manufacture homes, the real story should be how the manufacturing plant can be modified and configured to create more "custom" homes using the same flexibly CAD/CAM systems. Keep up the good work Grant. ")
