Justin, thanks so much for this video! I just ran across it this week while researching a choice between the 12700k and 12900k as I upgrade from 9900k. Currently have a full-size Torrent and Noctua NH-D15 cooler, which do a great job with the 9900k and a 3080 - your video convinced me that I should be able to manage the 12900k with that gear (and maybe an additional rear-panel fan added to the Torrent just in case, using a little undervolting and overclocking. Will also be adding a new CPU holddown frame, replacing the stock lever system, to keep the IHS as flat as possible to optimize cooling. Avoiding liquids in the box is a high-priority to me, but still want a system good for the next few years with GPU and VR-headset improvements along the way. Your work here is much appreciated, buddy - just the sort of info I was searching for, and more!

Hi bro, how about D15, is it working with the 12900k ?
@RJ-kr4bs Жыл бұрын
@@ViniCLplay the D15 works great but at the last minute I went with the 13700K - slightly lower cost, a bit better performance and lower power for that performance. With the fantastic D15 and a 4090 in a full-sized Torrent case I ended up with a silent monster system that will never spring a leak. Big thumbs up for the D15 although it looks like Noctua is prepping its successor from the rumors.

@@RJ-kr4bs awesome, I'll try the D15 too, thanks! I saw that the 13th generation has much higher temperatures than the 12th, this is the only aspect that caused my preference for the 12th.
@RJ-kr4bs Жыл бұрын
@@ViniCLplay Me too, at first, until I learned more about the 13s - the 13th-gen defaults to max full power with an excessive voltage (apparently to please reviewers, the high voltage means marginal non-binned chips can still hit the numbers but adds more wattage and heat unnecessarily since the chip doesn't need that much to run at peak performance), as I recall. So, allow it to run overclocked, but lower the max voltage - JayzTwoCents has done several good vids on this - find the one called "How to keep your CPU from melting" released about a month ago - a very simple introduction about making just one easy change to get started; you decide if you want to go further. My 13700K has "IA Offset" at -0.036v (your CPU may tolerate more or less, so you have to try/test to find out) and it lowered my CPU temps by 20-30C as I recall in Cinebench, even after boosting the clocks a bit. Easy to do with the Intel XTU utility as Jay shows. Good luck and have fun!
@ViniCLplay Жыл бұрын
@@RJ-kr4bs Another thing that can help lower the temperature is to use a "cpu contact frame", to prevent CPUs that use LGA1700 from warping. Research this problem, it may be happening on your computer.

I originally cooled my 12600k with a Big Shuriken 3 but was getting up to 100C on Cinebench. I switched to a FrostFlow240 and replaced the AIOs fans with Noctua 120mm PWMs and also changed the 92mm 3-pin DLH21 case fan to a Noctua PWM unit. I did the same undervolt but no overclock and dropped the peak temps to consistently less than 80C. The other caveat is the GPU (6950XT) is a gd reactor and is the source of most of the heat exhausting from the case.

How are your temps this good? With this exact setup (just in a Torrent Compact case - shouldn't make much difference) I'm hitting around 99-100 degrees with Cinebench R23. I tried reapplying the paste 3 times and ended up swapping the NH-U12A for an NH-D15 (which dropped my temps around 2-3 degrees) and with the addition of the -0.075 undervolt it now sits at around 89 degrees, which seems manageable. But still, your temps are way, way lower. How was your room temp during this testing? Or is it just a binning thing or something?

Great video, thanks! I have one of those N7 NZXT cases you have in the background, I managed to squeeze in an NH-D15 for my current 8700k but I'm looking to upgrade to 12th gen. I have Noctua fans on the front, on the rear, and on the top (getting THAT in place with the NH-D15 was a nightmare!) and with my 3080FE in the build my current CPU doesn't go over 70C. Should I suffer the pain of trying to get the NH-D15 in again or would you say the U12A would be enough for a 12700k in that case (with its really limited front air intake)? [EDIT] July 5: The NH-D15 wouldn't fit the new motherboard, so I am using the U12A with the 12700k and it's perfect! Temperatures mostly in 50s and 60s when under load. Hey Saeid! I read your comment and deliberately tested the difference for you when building my PC (Fractal Torrent, i2900k, Noctua U12A, Asus z690 Hero MOBO, basically mimicking this video’s build). My results came from stock voltages and only read in BIOS, so I did not use Cinebench because I got these readings before installing on OS. I kept the test perimeters the same with only orientation changing. (including thermal paste). in BIOS readings was 40C when vertical and 32C when horizontal. This is of course a huge difference! It showed me that despite the heat pipe concern, horizontal was significantly better.
@evanromansky54982 жыл бұрын
Adding onto my comment, I let the computer sit in my bedroom, ambient temp 75F, for an hour. Then I ran memtest86. Then I let the pc sit while I did other stuff. Each time it was pretty consistent, vertical would start at 36C and then stabilize around 39-40C, where the other orientation would sit around 32C stable regardless. Obviously getting cinebench points would help more and undervolting would help temps, however I do believe a stable change of 8C is enough to answer that question! I also did the 1mm plastic washer mod to the lga1700 bracket preemtively, so I do not have a comparison with or without, but I had that same washer mod for both orientations. I used the thermal paste that came with the noctua cooler.

I just bought a NH-D15 and ran it in a fractal design torrent case on a Asus strix z790-e, 13700k at 5.4. The d15 was only 2 degrees cooler than my NH-U12S with 2 fans. I sent it back and ordered a NH-U12a

Your under-volting demo is informative. Your dosimeter observations are erroneous. You need to learn about sound and how to measure.

find a air cooler with copper heat pipes, don't purchase aluminum heat pipe coolers they aren't as efficient at pulling heat into the heat sink. My 36$ arctic cooler air cooler keeps up with my i9 12900kf under load because it uses 5 copper heat pipes

Look man these old bloated pc cases aint it. Im sorry but no. Enough is enough we the consumers want compact ATX cases
@wolololololol39882 жыл бұрын
Speak for yourself and not “ALL OF CONSUMERS”, pretty sure I’m not the only who likes big cases. By the way, the Fractal Design Torrent has a compact version that still supports ATX motherboards and power supplies (and a “Nano” version for ITX motherboards). You should do your research before talking so much bs

Speak for yourself dude I'm sure most people prefer these "old bloated cases" and not some overpriced compact case that increases build difficulty, thermals, and noise.
