Man this reminds me a lot of building little cabins in the woods as a kid with scraps of wood and such. I remember trying to complete parts of them before it would rain or start snowing so me and my friends could hang out inside. There was something great about it and it gave me such a unique and satisfying feeling to be building my own shelter, esp when rain or storms were coming. Every bit we completed made us feel good and more secure knowing we made progress on a shelter of our own to stay out of the elements. We couldnt wait for rain so we could get inside. It was also exciting sometimes if we were in a rush against time when storms were coming. It was awesome to be able to get inside even if it wasnt all completed. Then we would go inside and tell stories and eat sunflower seeds since it was commonly the only food we had to bring outside. Great video

It looks fabulous! I'm so pleased with the way the thatching is turning out. Those home made paddles really did the job. I think that some hazel spars would make great cooking accessories for turning meat or even lifting a pot lid. Both you and Mike should be extremely proud of all your hard work on this build. Just like you, I've learned a lot from watching you.

Watching this collaborative build on both channels, my comment here is that, after the initial material collection, you could have sheltered in the structure...maybe after the second night. You were probably tired enough! I SAW that new technique where you used the 'handle' end of the paddle to fettle the thatch! AND YOU get to tell us how the cordage works to hold the system together. And, later, you get to show the very best interior roof shots and to explain about 'pruning' the sharp bits from the 'staples.' WHAT A TEAM!

A quick tip. When banging the thatch you want to form a slop with the ends in the shape of your roof. The top thatch closer to the apex and the bottom closer to the ground. This will allow water to drain off evenly. Professional thatchers have a tool similar to your paddles but the handle is on the back flat side of the paddles on the angle of the roof minus the angel of the finished thatch. You want to blend the end of each yelm with the one below it so there is no overhang between one row and it looks smooth to the peak. Check out videos on thatching on KZbin there are many.

An absolutely awesome job, guys! Well done! I bet you can’t wait to experience it overnight. Just a thought, here, but one that I think some other viewers would be interested in: concerning your other shelters, I think it would make a good episode if we got to see how each shelter is standing up, over time. e.g. what’s starting to rot or weather faster than expected; has bankline outlasted other types of line or vine; and which mix for the dawb seems best, etc. I think you guys have touched on this before, and it wouldn’t be an apples-to-apples comparison as they all went up at different times, but it’d still be of interest. I wonder which one will be the longest-lasting design.
@BUSHCRAFTTOOLS4 жыл бұрын
That's a great idea....although if you look through my KZbin channel you'll see a woodland walkthrough video of all the shelters and how they are coping. Great suggestion though.👍

I know this isn't on topic but I was wondering what kind of dog Amber is? By the way it looks great. Before you cut the tips of the spars off maybe you should use a little more cordage and tie the ends together so that they will have an even stronger grip on the thatch.

This is absolutely disgraceful to the thatching industry. What you are using is water reed and needs to be kept sheeted and dry at all times until you put the ridge on the property otherwiseyou are trapping moisturein the roof and will cause it to rot. Also you can't fix a new layer of thatch to the roof structure with hazel spars you need crooks or thatching screws or string. Also you are fixing the liggers way to low to the thatch it needs to be half way up the dressed material. You will probably find in a years time this will start to leak.
