Al and Gina get more done in one day than some other homesteaders get done in a month. I'm tired of watching homestead channels that just complain. Thank you Al and Gina for showing us how to get it done (even while dealing with your own personal problems). You are continuously inspiring and never dwell on the negative. Thank you again

Good Morning! Al, I was totally impressed when you had the trench dug to get power & water to the barn & workshop on the first LA. Now when I consider, the septic system, the huge solar system, the propane tank - - it's mind blowing what you've accomplished. That doesn't include everything in building the house itself. It's beyond incredible. Not only will you have a monumental inheritance for your children, grandchildren for generations to come -- - they will have the complete documentation of you & Gina doing it in "living color". Blessings & prayers to Gina, her doctors, nurses, & family as they support her in her healing process.

My thoughts as well. Move that row of big rocks forward, add some smaller ones to create a rock garden around it. Or, buy some plastic rocks, a large one to cover it and several around it, some buried partially, to create a fake rock garden around the tank, if you don’t want to move the row of big rocks.

Hi, I'm a Minnesotan too. We had our power out last night and it was lucky it was Homecoming too. One of our boys stayed out till 10:30pm with his friends from school and another I picked up from a friend's home so he could get dressed for the Homecoming dance at 6:30pm. Right as I was leaving to get him I found out our telephone pole out at the street had caught on fire and they were going to have to turn our power off. We came home to a dark house and I delivered him to the dance a little after 9pm. After I picked up my one son from his friend's house at 10:30pm, my other son wanted a ride home from the dance. We got back home a little after 11pm to a dark house. At 11:27pm after my two boys had gone to bed the lights came on! At least they had some fun! We parents had a very quiet night at home in the dark.

the tank dome (that's what it's called) is supposed to stick up several inches so water doesn't collect in the recessed part. Basically, the water will freeze and prevent you from getting a delivery. @@vickyoakes4584 ... well, there's other problems..... if the dome is filled with water and it freezes, you can't refill the tank. Last but not least, if the tank valve is frozen over and you need to shut off the gas for some reason, you are out of luck. This is why they write the code book.

Al, you need a Gorilla Cart for times when you can't get the tractor bucket or excavator bucket to where you need to dump something. Load it up with one of the heavy tools, roll it to where you need it and either shovel out or tip it into the dump position. They make many sizes. Would be helpful for the garden beds as well. Grading the soil up to the "trash bin" will also be a good way to remind you to keep the heavy equipment off the area where the tank is (build up the whole tank area). Plant some sort of low flowering plant on the little rise when done so you don't have to worry about mowing grass or weeds.

Al, those anode bags should be at opposing corners of the tank and not bunched up like they were. Also that foil tape should be a minimum of 4" above the line so you get the tape without the line if somebody were to dig. I hope they threw a level on it otherwise the gauge will not work accurately. Otherwise it looks good. I retired from the propane business and I don't miss it one bit!

@@clarencewiles963 I would have definitely put in a drain as a safety measure, especially considering the amount of water that was in the ground during the wet season when he put in his spring water system. In addition, there's a ditch running parallel to the tank, and pretty close to it. The breakout force for that tank to float up is going to be lower because of the narrow wall of dirt on the top of that side of the tank. That propane company should have recognized that. That is also a brand new tank, there should be a vacuum in it to verify there is no leaks when they first go to fill it. Not sure why he said "there isn't enough propane in it to run the generator". There should have been NONE in it. Anode bags are definitely in the wrong place.

Al, your skillset is just amazing. Doesn't matter what the job is, Al will get it done! Can I hire you???? The only suggestion I have about grading is make sure the land is graded AWAY from the house. We get a LOT of rain here in the Southern Appalachian mountains and even though we are on the side of a mountain, no water accumulates at the house. It all grades away and/or around the house. How many gallons is that tank? It is going to really sting getting that filled. We have a 500 gallon tank and pre paid for our winter fuel. Got it for $2.89 a gallon. God bless all y'all.

Nice to see you installed a large LP underground tank. So many times when we installed LP generators people would under size the fuel storage and find them selfs running out of LP when the generator is needed. Note with a generator you should never let the tank get below half a tank 40%. also it prevents the tank from popping out of the ground in a high water table situation. Usually a concrete cap is placed over the top. I would have had a drip leg at the regulator to collect oil that travels with the propane. Shouldn't be a major issue since there is one at the generator if you don't run the tank dry.
@StoneKathryn
@StoneKathryn 2 жыл бұрын
I always heard that too that to keep the pressure up you needed to keep it at least half full.
@RJ-er3gv
@RJ-er3gv 2 жыл бұрын
@@StoneKathryn The pressure thing has to do with the cold. Propane is a liquid and it produces gas that forms at the top of the tank. If its to cold it will not what we call boil and product gas fast enough for use. 1/2 tael is for generators because murphy's law states that when you need to use that generator is when the tank is almost empty.

It's never big enough. We got a 500 gallon tank years ago, which we thought was plenty for our uses in NC for a year. Now we have to fill it twice a year and wish we got a 1000 gallon. You always find more things to run on propane when you have it, and use more than you think some years.
@patriotmama
@patriotmama 2 жыл бұрын
We have two 500 gallon tanks and all we do is cook and heat our water with it. I have a gas dryer, but hang clothes out most of the year. Our power usually goes out for a day or two (at most) in the winter due to an ice storm and our whole house generator kicks in. We have outside wood boiler for heat. That generator is a Generac and uses about 1 gallon per hour for our electricity. There is just the two of us here. Kids are all grown and gone. Not much laundry. I do cook most of our meals here at home. We don't go out much. We have to fill our tanks twice a year and the last time, because of the price, it really stung. You always use more than what you think you do. Our wood boiler is strictly wood, not duel fuel so we don't us any propane for heat.

If you have no building department regulations to satisfy, most insurance companies will rely on NFPA 58 regulations. Good luck!
