Cavin' also! Wood floors over basement that has furnace. Cat hair easier to sweep up on wood! Thanks to the family who built this cabin 100 years go, thanks to the family that upgraded the warmth by tearing off the aluminum siding and putting on pink board and fiberglass, thanks to the family that moved aside the wood furnace and put in a modern gas and enclosed the open porch. Thanks for the forward thinking that installed thermopane crank out windows as part of the upgrade from uninsulated house to insulated. If I live long enough, the garage sloped roof will be raised to allow a second story for my son. And this acute triangle lot may even see a tiny house on wheels at the edge of a slope. Lots if possibilities, due solely to the strange triangle shape accumulation of these 3 lots. On this too steep hillside that should never have been built on but that is what so many of the houses are now: the conforming lots are gone and only the problems are left to be adjusted and lived with. C'est la Vie!

Hi Gina and Al, for the heat master for the chimney you should look at getting a chimney hat this will act for stopping the rain all year round and by placing wire mesh over it it will stop any animal or small birds from trying to make a nest in the cold unit during the summer time. The radiated heat will be bliss that’s for sure. We installed a solar hot water system just after last Christmas and in all that time it’s not used any electric to run even during the long drawn out cold wet weather this past winter.

I love radiant heat. If my feet are warm I am usually comfortable. Cooking with cold feet is not fun. Our house is on a slab and it is cold. Even carpeting is not warm when the snow starts flying. 1:15 I think that is just a shipping cap... why don't you just get a chimney cap? Duravent makes one that should hand screw right on to that flange, they are easy to take off and replace with the shipping cap in the summer. With a wood fire you need one with a flame arrestor screen, you can cause a forest fire with the embers going up your pipe... its probably required by the state... plus rain and snow will get in and may cause your fire box to rot out... Last winter my chimney cap top blew off my boiler and it made mess in the basement during a large storm. Looks like a DuraVent DuraTech Chimney Cap 6DT-VC for 6" pipe...

We can see it has a screw-type fitting on it to allow attachment of more insulated or non-insulated chimney pipe. Another 36" (3 feet) might be in order - may even help the fire draw better, but something tells me it's all microprocessor controlled to adapt to whatever it senses.
@rupe532 жыл бұрын
@@samvalentine3206 ... I have several neighbors in town with similar boilers and the process of adding flue pipe seems to be trial and error, depending on what you need to disperse the smoke enough to not be bothersome by the house. Sometimes it's 3 feet more and sometimes it's 10+ feet. Whatever works. Not to state the obvious, but the smoke is blowing toward the solar panels. I wonder how much added dirt they will collect.

I see a boiler house in the future to prevent snow build up around and on top of the boiler, also to keep snow and rain from going in the chimney. A bonus would be wood storage and keeping you dry while putting wood in the boiler.

building something around or on top of the boiler is a bad idea.... and a fire hazard. I'm sure it's in bold print within the owner's manual. All he is missing is a proper chimney cap.... and maybe a slightly taller chimney.

@@plurmingo1 ... I won't stoop to name calling so I'll just clarify what I said... if it's UL listed as an outdoor unit then it's a bad idea to try using it indoors. that's not necessary. Once they get a delivery of propane and the dirt settles for a month or so, it's just not an issue. If there was high ground water, then you'd strap the tank to concrete from below. That hole was open overnight and stayed dry so nothing else is needed.

Suggestion recommend that you stock up couple circulation pumps or 3 now may take time to get replacements last thing you need now is to lose one in the winter and not be able to get possibility a zone valve or 2 and thing that actually have moving parts I would recommend just to have on hand peace of mind security

Another major task checked off the to-do list. You two must have an immense sense of pride in what you've accomplished in a fairly short time frame. I'm looking forward to seeing all the animals there and when you start work on your big house.

Hello Al & Gina I also been waiting patiently for you to started the Outside Wood Burner. Great Job with your design in your floor plans. I'm sure you will have to build a structure to protect it from Harsh winter weather and with that structure you also can have place to store all your unseason and seasoned wood for burning

Put some large boulders a few feet away from and in front of the propane box. This will hide the box and blend in with all the other boulders. And, no maintenance!

I've been eager for this day since you first routed the PEX through the radiant heat floor panels before pouring the slab. I'm so glad that it all went smoothly. The results achieved due to your prep work, eye for detail, and multiple inspections of every step validate the extra time investment. Quality workmanship 💪

Two tips having built the same system, your hot water cylinder coil should be plumbed in at the top and out at the bottom so that the circulation cannot steal heat. And your floors should be on a controlled mixing valve with outdoor reset. The thermal mass of the floor means that an indoor thermostat will never be able to control it smoothly. Have a look at Tekmar controls they are the Rolls Royce of radiant floor heating.

Mooi huisje waar heerlijk gewerkt word, en in een mooie omgeving. Ik ben in Delft geboren, maar zijn in 1952 vertrokken naar Canada. The Lumnah’s are a great, hard working family, hoping to move from there smaller farm of around ten or so acres to this new five hundred acre property, initially all wooded or bush, but now partly cleared and waiting for further development, including a permanent home! Wish them well!

Where I live every house has one of those boxes in the ground. Most are at least 6 inches above ground. Those that are lower get grass and dirt collecting on them. It is hard to keep them cleaned off and uncovered. Hope you don't get dirt washing down the hill and burying yours. If you leave it high enough that won't happen. Enjoy watching all your projects.

Al and Gina, congratulations on getting the wood-fired boiler up and running - it’s been a long time coming and a lot of hard work. I loved watching Tanner inspect Al’s work on the water system in the bathroom - is his official title Dog-Spector? He such a sweet boy!

Wow, cool boiler! Shouldn't there be some sort of rain cover/spark arrestor on the top of the chimney? It looks like it's threaded for it.
@LumnahAcres2 жыл бұрын
It’s doesn’t need any. It’s threaded like that so you can add more chimney pipe on it if you’d like

i hope you are thinking about some kind of enclosure for the boiler. Its going to be very uncomfortable feeding the boiler in a snow storm.

Are you planning on putting up a shelter over the entrance to your wood boiler? I have seen people around here do it. You probably need it more up there.
@danielniquette51872 жыл бұрын
The feeling of radiant floor is unbeatable! One great advantage is that it takes no place in the house. You can place the furniture anywhere you want without restriction. I have the same setup in my house for 17 years and I don’t regret it a bit. I also have an outside wood boiler to heat the water. If you have the chance to have a wood lot to make your own firewood, it reduces greatly the cost of heating the house and it pays the extra cost of the set up. Keep on the good work.

How exciting! How cozy! I can’t figure out why it is that you need a generator. Did you try the shower?!😊❤️
@StoneKathryn2 жыл бұрын
When the solar isn't very good in the winter and their power draw on the batteries is too great they can run the generator to get the batteries charged back up. You don't want to let your batteries get too drained.

Good morning Lumnah Acres and all the modern steaders watching! Al, I love how you start the fire with the propane torch because that's similar to how we start our fires in our fire pit, with a propane weed torch. Love the kindling you use. So exciting to see the wood stove start working. Yay, up to temp and circulating the water. The trash can drawer looks amazing Gina! I think it looks better with the wood being blank! Pretty leaf colors in your woods guys, Too bad the 90 leaked but you caught it right away. Still a lot of wood in there for going all night! Nice! So great that it came up to 84 degrees for the slab inside and that upstairs is warm too. That box you built to insulate the water pipes looks great. Wow, that grade looks really nice. So much progress guys! Thanks for this Lumnah family.
