@jmm847610 күн бұрын
Thanks for this. Jesus. I really don’t get what people want. I’m very tired of “world building.” I’m good. Not every movie has to have some Inter-textually defined space with rules and logic and bureaucracy and on and on. I’m writing this from the future, but I saw Nosferatu twice over Christmas break. Unreal. No world building. You see a place, you are immersed, it hammers you with imagery from start to finish at an exciting pace and the logical cohesion of the place arises from your own visual mapping of related imagery and style, and the characters acting within that space. Overused word, but it’s visceral. And believe it or not, it reminds me a lot of Fury Road. It’s self contained and the characters and action are of this place and this place does not require a rule set to understand. Aren’t we tired of the marvel/Star Wars/ Disney mode of doing things? Can we not yet see that it’s a marketing ploy? Aren’t we smarter than this?
@forrestfire1014 ай бұрын
Great discussion. I think both movies are phenomenal, but I actually prefer the grade of Furiosa compared to Fury Road. Much more naturalistic which helps with emersion. When things are super saturated and stylized it almost feels like the filmmakers are trying to show off or compensate for something. That may not be the intention at all that's just the vibe I get and it's a little more distracting then if things are just presented with more honesty. Totally subjective and both takes have merit just thought I'd throw in my two cents on perhaps why the change was made between films.
@dominiczepeda77984 ай бұрын
I can see why you think naturalistic is the vibe they were going for. My thought is, everything is so over the top anyway, so why did they need to shy away when it came to the color grade? They established a world in Fury Road in part thanks to the color grade, so the fact that they would then backstep is an odd choice, ya know? It's by the same director, but you could honestly maybe not know that thanks to how different the color grade is.

@bearzerger4 ай бұрын
What dragged Furiosa down for me compared to Fury Road far more than any visual difference was the sound mix. Furiosa didn't just look too clean, it also sounded too clean. Aside from that one storm, the environment is almost always if not completely silent then only very selectively noisy. When they talk it too often feels like they are on a soundstage. For example there's this one scene where Jack is talking to Furiosa from like 30 meters away in the middle of a desert and it just sounds like he's talking to her over the dinner table. Completely clear, no wind or anything around them, he doesn't even need to raise his voice. Or during the action scenes, I remember when Furiosa was working under the war rig you rarely hear any engine sounds whatsover unless they are used to draw attention to a new vehicle. There's this one scene where you can hear her snip the burning fuse of a piece of dynamite with a set of pliers. Perhaps the intention with choices like these was to lean into the surreal aspect of this story, since it's intended as some kind of myth being told to us. However in a high-octane world like Mad Max with how loud and unstable the war rig must be it just feels fake to me.
@bokchoiman4 ай бұрын
Yeah improper sound mixing really takes me out of a movie. Like, I get suspension of disbelief and all that, but there's rarely any good reason why two characters separated by 30 feet should be able to just talk at normal volume and works. I'm not buying it.

I remember before Fury Road I watched some Transformers movie and I thought "I don't really like action movies". And then I still decided to watch Fury Road my first thought after it was "god damn, I absolutely love action movies". To this day it is one of my favourite action movies. Furiosa is a good movie, but, as pretty much everyone saying it's more about characters and world building and honestly I didn't needed any of this.

I just had these moments where it felt fake and uninspired. I need to see it again with the Fury Road grade to see how many of those moments were ruined by that.

"crushed blacks" is maybe over-simplifying. It's Matt's grade so he knows what he's done to it but I think it's better described as being more frugal with the true blacks. Crushing the low end is part of it but that usually describes bringing more of the shadow spectrum down to 100% black, whereas in the Fury Road grading they are more like "milky blacks" where the majority of the shadow spectrum is compressed in a brighter spectrum than true black, which creates the cohesion they discussed by forcing your brain to see all the elements as if they're in this one overcast environment, in this instance covered in plumes of dust as well, but they sell the stylization by tinting the shadows with those reds and oranges. You'll notice even though its usually a cool red it's still warmer than we expect those shadows to be so it makes the scene feel super dry and hot. It also makes the blue and green tones really pop against the background (even when they are also muddied by the warm grading) as well as separating the characters & setpieces from the desaturated teal sky and, like the guys explored in the Godzilla clip from the other channel, makes the impact of the massive overbright explosions and deep darkness stand out from the baseline and gives them the freedom of using the gamma and contrast to draw our focus towards important elements. Watch that scene with max tied to the front of the car back and you'll see how the Fury Road is able to draw your focus by injecting those deep blacks into key parts of the forground action while the background is layered with smoke and ambient light that washes it out, kinda the same way you use soft focus but the detail is still crisp

One technique I've always suggested to people is, to put a big color correct at the end of your comp(or in an adjustment layer in something like AE). Play with curves, contrast, gamma, abuse it, tweak back and forth, make it brighter or darker (or if you are already using LUT's, try all of them, tweak them, abuse them)... your comp should work in ALL those cases, not just for the "grade you were using". A good comp survives ANY grade, so try it in "ALL OF THEM".

This is a really interesting discussion, but I feel the principal issues with the film were NARRATIVE. 1. The 'Child' part of the movie went on far too long. In movies where you have a character go from child to adult, it USUALLY happens midway through Act I, and at most goes on till the end of Act I itself. Child Furiosa goes on for 45% of the movie. It's way too long, and we don't bond with adult Furiosa because of this. 2. The Revenge plot. To make this more like Fury Road, Act II would have to be CONSUMED by Furiosa's quest for revenge. Every decision that she made should have been taking her closer to her final goal, and this would only change where she decides to run away with her man. In the Film she seems to change what she wants, is going to run away then changes her mind etc etc, and this confuses the audience.

Like, stylistic continuity is supposed to be what connects two movies in the same universe. You don't see style change from the Sin City or 300 movies.
