Arthur told him to run and don’t look back, John going for Micah was doing the exact thing that Arthur told him not to do and caused Ross and Archer to find him and John’s entire family paid the price for it. And Jack Marston becomes the very thing that everyone tried so hard to keep him from becoming an OUTLAW. My favorite Easter egg in this game is when the Strange Man leaves John. "This is a fine spot. See you around, Cowboy." He's not referring to his house looking nice. He's talking about where his family will be buried. But my favorite detail on top of that is in the beginning of the story, Ross meets Jack by the river. By the end, Jack meets Ross by the river. What a story.

John sacrificed himself in the end, he could’ve ran but knew it was no use…his family were in danger as long as he was alive. He went from being a deadbeat father to dying for his family to live. True redemption.
@nightmarepegasus4141
@nightmarepegasus4141 Ай бұрын
Just to say, when being a deadbeat, it's that he cared about them enough to not want to be a father and husband. John had a very low opinion bout himself, didn't want jack to have a killer father, depressed, sometimes drunk ( i like the parallele between john's father and john, his father was a drunk violent man who got blind at one point and later died in a fight, john was depressive, drunk, a violent outlaw, was near to get blind after the wolf attack...). So to say, with camp events since chap2, john and abigail talk and john says bad things about himself, that abigail should find someone else, later that he's going to try to be a descent father and husband because he loves abigail. In chap2, at an event, john looks at what jack is doing so cares about him a little, even john mourning that arthur fish with jack shows that john wanted to do it, needed time to have the motivation John is struggling and depressive, is sure to be an aweful father and husband so rather not be at all for abigail and jack's sake

What cannot be understated is the shock and awe this ending stirred up when it was first released. At the time, no major game studio had the balls to kill off their main character in such a shocking and brutal way. It was such an important first for a game as massive as this. I remember I was 12 when the game first came out and I played through the entire game in a single weekend because I was so captivated by the story and world. The ending hit me like a 100 ton boulder and from that moment forward it was my favorite game ever... Until RDR2 came out. Rockstar somehow surpassed their gold standard expectations with a game that exceeded everyone's imagination. These games mean so much to myself and many others, and I'm glad you got to experience it as well, Jett.

There is a theory that Jack, after getting his revenge on Ross, did go on to become a writer. The evidence of this comes from one of the GTA games were there's a book titled Red Dead and it says it was written by J. Marston. Again, this is only a theory but one that I liked to believe is true because it means that Jack did in fact brake the cycle and went on to possibly live a normal life.

My personal theory that I like is that Jack is the author, but lives in the GTA universe. This is why the book is there. The RDR universe, at least to some extent, is the fictionalized universe of Jack’s book. This is why the gta and rdr universes have different areas fictionalized and real (ie New York exist in RDR, but in GTA it’s Liberty City).

*Revenge is an idiot’s game* John avenging big bro Arthur is what sealed his fate back in RDR2’s epilogue. Micah was the Pinkerton’s link to finding Dutch & the rest. Once John killed Micah, Ross & the rest tracked him down to Beecher’s Hope, kidnapped his family so that he would be their unwilling errand boy, then killed him once he served his purpose. Arthur told him to go and not look back. But John couldn’t. *You’re my brother*

John's Marston death was foreshadowed a few times through the story. I know that one - the final Strange Man encounter - he says that this is a good spot. I think I remember someone in the comments mentioned to "remember that spot", I think the person meant that John's and Abigail's grave were going to be there. The Strange Man is some sort of entity that represents Death and he knows that John's death was coming. Another foreshadowing was when Agent Ross told John Marston that he will earn a medal on his chest, there's two ways to interpet that: an actual medal of achievement. Or a bullet in the chest since it is made of metal, too.

I said it once I'll say it again: The entire reason why Arthur told John to never look back was because of exactly what happened that you see. The government wanted Dutch all along, not Marston. That's why the Reverend and the chicks got away clean because the government didn't care for them as much as they didn't care for John, Sadie, Charles, Uncle, etc. When John killed Micah, the government lost their only mole on Dutch's whereabouts. John led the government right to his doorstep and ultimately, his fate. Beautiful franchise, I hope to see a RDR 3 one day. Thank you for this adventure, Jett. Take care.

When RDR2 was announced and John wasn't the main character, I was deeply disappointed because all I wanted to do was play as my favorite main character in video game history again. It's like the feeling when you are forced to play as Jack at the end of this game; there's a sort of emptiness and lack of motivation to play because you've so deeply connected to John through the whole game. I think a lot of people like me who played RDR before RDR2 felt similarly. I was disappointed with Arthur being the main character, but I also trusted R* to create another excellent character. And in a sort of surreal turn of events, by the end of RDR2 when I was then forced to play as John, my favorite MC in video game history, I felt those same feelings of emptiness and lack of motivation. Really made me appreciate both games and both characters more having experienced both stories.

"The Other Promise" at 57:24 fits Jack's character perfectly. As the song from Kingdom Hearts being the battle theme for Roxas symbolise the fight for identity that both characters have lost throughout both games and both being a shadow of their "original selves" which being Sora in Roxas case and John Marston for Jack Marston. As Jack refers to himself as "John Marston Jr." Through battle quotes and everyone refers Roxas as Sora's nobody. Sorry for my rant it was a cool parallel as Jack Marston and Roxas are one of the most tragic gaming characters I know.

@The-ArthurMorgan
@The-ArthurMorgan Ай бұрын
There’s an underlining theme, or moral of the RDR series and it’s that revenge is a fool’s game, and what you do will never simply disappear. Arthur told John that he needed to run away from it, to step out of the darkness with hurry and run as fast as he could, to never remember nor look back on what he had, or what he was doing. John failed that. He doomed himself and his family the moment he indulged the darkness he was running from and unsheathed it for what? Revenge. It cost him everything in the end, and by continuing the cycle he doomed Jack to live the very same way. Did you notice that when Jack kills Ross, he looks at his gun for a moment? Almost as if he looks at it and is going to throw it away.. But he doesn’t, because he knows he’s going to use it again, as if he *wants* to use it again. And by that alone, he is going to take revenge on the world, on the people that took from him, he’s going to indulge that very same darkness and by doing so he’s going to doom himself to the very same fate his father, and that Arthur before him had. Because revenge is a fool’s game.

@@Qwertyuiopaz Maybe there's some wiggle room though? John killed a lot of people in the end, and did a lot of bad things, for his family and protecting the innocient. Consider God apperantly was really big on crusades back in the day, leading the faithful to strike down and kill those he considered the 'bad guys', that might mean John equally gets a pass. This is coming from someone who isn't religious in the slightest. Just my 2 cents

The thing is, since rdr2 the gang wanted to sort of protect Jack from the life they all lived. Like Arthur who helped John to escape. Arthur said to John to run and don’t look back but John went against Arthur’s wishes by killing Micah for revenge. Jack also shared in this path of vengeance by going after Ross and becoming the one thing John and Abigail didn’t want Jack becoming. It makes me wonder if Rdr3 would involve Jack and the federal government for the fact that he killed Ross but let’s hope not.

John could've absolutely singlehandedly beat the Pinkerton's assault on his home. But to him - it was him they wanted - so he figured the only way that Jack and Abigail could truly be free is if he sacrificed himself. ALSO, remember how I said to remember The Strange Man saying to John "This is a lovely spot."? It's where John gets buried after his death. And remember when John shot 3 times at The Strange Man before his gun jammed? It was signifying the deaths of John, Abigail, and Uncle. The fourth shot jamming was Jack being spared.

What makes John's death worse in my opinion is that he was screwed over AND he thought he got out. With Aruthur, he made peace with his coming death and with John's escape there was a degree of closure in that for him. John didn't get that.

If you listen carefully, the lyrics of the song in the credits (Deadman's Gun) kinda talks about Jack's life and how his "hand's upon a dead man's gun." Also, I don't know if you noticed but Jack shot Ross with the same gun that he gave John in that one mission. Just a fine detail. Thank you for everything and have a wonderful rest of your day!

@gamingden444
@gamingden444 Ай бұрын
Hey Jett, idk if anyone’s mentioned this but even though Jack’s ending is very bittersweet because of revenge and the “outlaw legacy,” there are references which point to him leaving outlawing and becoming a writer. With RDR and GTA5 being created by rockstar, there’s evidence which suggests they exist in the same universe. In one of the storyline’s characters’ houses theres a book collection with multiple different parody / serious books in usual rockstar fashion. But one of these is titled “Red Dead” by J. Marston. The ‘J.’ Is ambiguous because it could be Jack or John, but judging by the fact that John is remarked as practically illiterate (especially in this game which released before GTA5 and the journal in RDR2 wasn’t implemented until after this Easter egg), this def suggests that Jack ultimately became a writer in the end. I imagine this is him retelling his entire life story, under the guise of it being a western like the ones he loved to read. That or an actual autobiography. It’s super fitting, and adds a bit more happiness to a very VERY sour ending but it’s one of my favorite facts ever and I hope you see this to find out about it.

when John shoots the strange man he only does it 3 times because the gun jams on his fourth bullet. None of the bullets hit the strange man, but those three bullets represent John, Abigail, and Uncle. The fourth bullet is Jack, he was the only one to live and the worst thing is where they bury John and the rest is in that exact place. And at the end of RDR2 John and Abigail talk about the future in the place where they are going to be buried... Flashbacks of RDR2: Jack kid: when i grow up i want to be a Gunslinger....😊😊😊 Abigail: Over my dead body.... RDR 1....

Like the TLOU series, the RDR series is also sad. Arthur sacrificed himself knowing that he would die from TB to save John and John sacrificed himself to save his family and Jack grown up becoming the very thing that John and Abigail didn't want him to be, an outlaw. Most likely that after Ross's murder, the feds might send someone after Jack. Someone worse than Ross and Milton. If you asked me who is worse between Milton or Ross then I would say Ross. Milton may have been a cold-blooded killer but at least he was honest. When he said he going to do something he does it, like when he promised that he would kill Dutch and the gang and he killed Hossa. Ross on the other hand is not only a cold-blooded killer but he also dishonest. Kidnapping John's family and promising him to leave him and his family be if he hunt down and kill his former gang members only to kill him at the end of it. What Dutch said "they just find another monster", in a way he was warning John that this was going to happen, today Dutch is the monster and tomorrow, John is the monster. Pretty sure that the only reason Ross wanted John to kill Dutch was to give his supervisors a reason to go after John. So... yeah, in my opinion, Ross is worse than Milton and it's a good thing that Jack took him out to avenge John.
