I know you like the crazier ideas, so how about a reverse format (battle then catch) where you do a battle where each pokemon is associated with some benefit for the catching phase and when you knock them out opponents pokemon, you get it.

Not really, it was Shadow Force, not Phantom Force, Shadow Force can only be learned by Giratina. Phantom Force is the one that can be learned by other Pokemon.

Y'all should do a "then we fight" tournament. Pull in some of the other guys that you regularly do these with, maybe even reach out to other folks doing the same thing, like Chilln Play and QuickGG. Could make each round a different theme: two truths and a lie, names in other languages, pick by stats, pick by abilities, dice roll, etc...

Something interesting to think about is that when you go by strongest move, that DOESN'T factor in STAB. Based on these videos, it seems like a lot of pokemon don't actually get a STAB strongest move at all.
