✔️ About the Episode:
The Grand Canyon has been on our "Travel Wish List" from the beginning. We are so excited to finally be in Arizona and see how impressive the views are from the South Rim. Incredible journey and breathtaking experience! From the trains in Williams, AZ to roaming wildlife in the Grand Canyon National Park this experience is truly a once-in-a-lifetime memory.
Williams, Arizona is a wonderful town and we are so excited to come back and ride the train to the Grand Canyon. It looks like so much fun and what an experience to have indeed. The Grand Canyon area is full of exciting restaurants, gift shops, Canyon tours, and more. Well worth adding more time to discover.
Our trip was packed full of twists and turns and it ended, unfortunately, with damaging the Rig. Always be prepared for the road and make sure you are ready for each and every challenge that RV'ing will bring your way. We hope you enjoy and can't wait to hear about your trip to the Grand Canyon as well.

Hi Jeff! Glad to know that we aren’t the only ones. 😀 We thought about putting diamond plate on there, but when you’re on the road you just go with what’s available. We definitely didn’t laugh on that day. But now we have one heck of a campfire story. Thanks for sharing! Best, Lee

@@discoveryboundrv I agree with Jeff. Foam fill that damage, cut it off and make sure its sealed and then get a custom cut piece of diamond plate and cover it. A new or repaired door will be extremely expensive, good luck.

I love watching your videos. It’s never good when we damage our stuff but thank you for sharing. We’re trying to learn as much as we can before getting on the road this summer. Square the hole, fill with foam then cut and attach a piece of thin diamond plate over the door. It'll look like it was place there for protection from rocks. You might even diamond plate the entire front for protection from rocks.

We have the same truck. We have a problem with the tailgate opening all the time. Ended up hitting our door on our raptor but not as bad as yours. My husband fixed the door. He straightened the frame and fix the small hole in the fiberglass and repainted it. Had the paint mixed at the auto paint store. Looks good as new. Ford really needs to fix the tailgate issue.

Good to hear that we are not alone on the whole tailgate issue. We thought we might have left it down, but both of us swear we didn’t. It happened in Virginia and then again in Arizona. The last one really made a mess of the rig door. 😀 We will look into a tailgate lock. Maybe it’s just for our piece of mind. 👍

Hi Helen, it’s amazing how 5th wheels don’t really have any protection from rocks in that forward area. Diamond Plate is a great idea. I think they should all come with something. Mud flaps don’t stop everything! 😀

The tailgate down was not your fault! I have known RV transporters having this issue with your model of truck, to add a way to use a chain to be able to hold it in place to prevent it from being able to open on its own. It seemed like it was mainly the ones with the push button tailgate release.

A good old hack to deter tailgate theft is by opening the tailgate and installing a 2" hose clamp (worm gear style) around the passenger-side tailgate hinge. This is the hinge that lifts out in order to remove the tailgate.

We met someone in our last RV park that did the same thing. It is actually very common. He had tape holding his bay doors on. Bless his heart. I'm sure he got the look from his wife. We also met a guy that hit a tree branch and did a whole LOT of damage to his roof air conditioners. We felt so bad. We gave him duct tape and garbage bags to tape everything up before it rained. You really need to loose that type of bed cover and look into a folding style that lays flat under the back window. Ours folds back to front in two sections, or the one front section folds back so I can access the extended fuel tank and toolbox combo. I got mine from E trailer. I also got one of those plastic stick on convex panels and cut it in half and placed it in the center window. I can see the hitch, plug, breakaway cable and the tailgate.

Hi Matt. Good catch. We are actually looking into getting a fuel tank and toolbox combo with a sliding cover. It's on our list of upgrades before we go out West again. When we ordered the truck, we wanted a hard top and it only cost $100 dollars to get the Tonneau cover from the Ford factory. After market install was a LOT more. Basically, we will consider this a temporary cover until we figure out what we really want. Thanks for the great tip.

Yikes but if it helps, in my business we tow trailers everyday. I made it mandatory that the driver get out and double check connections this includes coupler, jacks, chains and electrical connections. This helped a great deal, even with that somethings bound to happen. I have had my tailgate on my f250 come down once on its own like you mentioned.

Hi Michael. We agree. We fold up the hard-top cover because in certain situations it can hit the 5th Wheel. We just side with caution. Our camera system shows when the tailgate is down.....but we have to actually look. We also have a big red warning that pops up on the dash. It just shows that even with all the precautions, the road will throw wrenches in your plans. :) Thanks for sharing. All the best and safe travels.

Hi John. You are correct. We priced the door for repair and decided that we were going to keep our patch repair on the door a little longer. 😋 It was pretty pricey. We got out of this mess very lucky. We figure if it was going to happen then at least it was just a door. Everyone has their “rig damage” story and some are much worse than others. We met a guy with a beautiful Class A and had a huge dent down the side where he hit a concrete pillar. I think we were very lucky indeed. Thanks again and Travel safe! 👍
