Yes Budapest is something of a gem, again it was 34 years ago when I visited. I remember eating in a very good restaurant in Buda, which must have been close to where you visited, but without the tourists. Pest is equally interesting, especially its Art Nouveau architecture and worth returning to. If you are going to the Balkans do visit Sarajevo its a truly unexpected incredible experience.
