I have been on a deployment in Beaumont Texas for the last 5 weeks or so due to the virus outbreak. We just had Laura skirt next to us and we had hunkered down within the city. Late in the evening I was like why did I not demand that my crew and I move an hour west or so. We weathered the storm and when we came out we had gotten lucky. We always prepare for the worst and hope for the best in my business and you two benefit from that practice as well. You guys are so precious and the world needs more of you... please always take the harder more cautious option.

You can use your pole as it is but you would need to store it on deck which makes it very difficult to deploy and use . The ring car won't work for mast storage as you have found out. Save the spinnaker pole and just change the end of it to a "TS" socket. You really should have a toggle car which has a "TS" or universal joint type pin on it. I got a car off a Catalina 42 and swapped a pin over to it. You should have an Isomat NG86 mast and any Isomat car except the one that fits the NG150 mast will work. They are hard to find new and outrageously expensive. Keep an eye out where ever a hurricane passed through and used boat parts places and maybe you'll get lucky. RigRite in the States has new Isomat parts. Glad Gonsalvo passed without issue. Looking forward to the cutless bearing video. Glad you put the Bruntons in. Al V42CC hull#98

Thanks al, will keep an eye out for old mast parts, the spinnaker pole is too big anyway so will look out for some old parts and we can finally use it again!
@scubaseas14 жыл бұрын
@@SailingMillennialFalcon I had thought your pole looked a bit undersize actually. A 3" works fine if you fly a full symmetrical spinnaker. If too long you can cut the pole easily. If you are using it just as a whisker pole a line control pole works better but LC poles won't work in compression. i.e with a spinnaker. A full chute running down wind with the main sheeted in tight to control roll is a great way to go "downhill". Once you get used to (I mark my guys/preventers) setting the pole up it's pretty painless to fly a big chute if you have a snuffer. Used spinnakers are pretty easy to come by. Snuffer socks not so much.

Growing up, we took the boat of the mooring and hauled it when bad weather was forecast. Except for that one time...and it flipped on the mooring. Luckily it was the small motorboat and it was salvageable. Our neighbor wasn’t as lucky. 30 footer broke the mooring and flipped on the beach. Would rather do the work and it be unnecessary than deal with picking up the pieces.

After living through cyclone Tracy many years ago the success of your preparations are entirely dependent on the preparation of others in close proximity. Structures and boats that would have easily survived a blow are battered by someone else's poorly built or neglected whatever falling apart. My father was vey high up in the NT Housing commission at the time and he made the remark after the cyclone had wrecked Darwin that they should sue the government for damages because their houses had all been build by the cheapest shoddy builders to inferior standards and fell apart destroying commission houses. I clearly remember a hurricane in the Caribbean in the last couple of years where hundreds of boats and marina's were destroyed yet there were undamaged boats moored all by themselves out in a huge lagoon. Except for wind and rain nothing else hit them.

@smiling millenial falcon .... doesn't even have to be an epic direct hit to particularly hurt boat'n crew in a panicked-out roadstead dissolving in that deadly brew of bad seamanship, malfunctioning underdimensioned gear and "save-themselves-who-still-can" sort of anti-solidarity spreading as soon as *_everybody_* will be caught in all-hands! manoeuvres out there. Your gear from pole to clamps could use some TLC, too - good to recognize without 70+ kts wind already blowing. For the Spi-Pole fitting: Harken; does cost an arm and a leg, but does pay itself in the long run for absoeffinglutely sure. www.harken.com/productcategory.aspx?taxid=380 And no, I do not hold any assets, I just started my sailing on competitively raced regatta boats (aka overcanvassed to the point beyond which You tend to throw the whole bloody rigg in the drink each time essential outfits suddenly stop behaving properly or even fail like Your mast ring ....)
