I grew up in Harlingen (the mainland town the ferries to Vlieland and Terschelling sail from) and knew several folks volunteering for the KNRM. It isn't just volunteering, it is a way of life in these communities. If you get paged in the middle of an important business meeting you get up and go, no questions asked and nobody thinks anything of it. Thanks for highlighting them in this video!

I am retired from the fire department I was a firefighter paramedic and I did search and recovery diving. Many places in the US are still manned by what we call VOLFD's or paid call FD's Community support are essential.
@southjerseysound73404 жыл бұрын
@@MurphysLemonadeStand our local FD is all volunteer and if it wasn't for community support we couldn't do it. It's amazing how fast our response times are, we're on average within a minute or less than a neighboring town that has a paid department. I actually got involved because I am in the towing business and we had a incident where I had to use my heavy wrecker to secure a car that went over the rail. After the incident we started a cross training program and I became a volunteer soon after. It's actually amazing the capability that we now have. Besides being trained fireman I've got 20+ years of accident and vehicle recoveries, we've also got 2 active members that are lineman for the power company, another member is a seatow captain and dive instructor and so much more. Everyone that volunteers brings something to the table from their day job/career that you wouldn't find in a traditional dept.
@MurphysLemonadeStand4 жыл бұрын
@@southjerseysound7340 Actually you I do believe it. Many departments (paid) hire people just like you with your experience. Because when you work in rescue or 911 in general the key is that personnel be a jack of all trades. Be aware or traffic situations. Be aware of geographical terrain. Be aware of down lines. Be aware of proper vehicle staging to protect personnel during a rescue from on coming traffic. Be aware of gas leaking from an automobile. The list goes on. I have sat on many interview panels (I was one month away from starting my B.C. promotion before I was hit on the road by drug traffickers. It broke my neck and I had injuries to both sides of the brain. I just started reading and writing without a computer a couple years ago) and the sad part about people with no volunteer experience going for the paid position as a new firefighter and not being ready to answer questions. People with no actual fire experience just need to know how to explain how their experience is an asset to the fire department. Even though we can see how their experience can be an asset for many larger city departments its not the time or place to teach them that during a interview. I could go on about this for hours. But I try to focus on being retired and sailboats now. lol Be safe out there and thank you for your service!

I had 15 years with the Royal National Lifeboat Institution in Lymington UK, it runs on the same system as the KNRM in the Netherlands. It often surprised overseas sailors that they are not being charged for the rescue, we turned out in any weather no matter what your problem. The only time I have seen any of our crew seasick is when we did some exercise with an old life raft like the one you donated, it gets pretty warm and claustrophobic inside.

I follow some sailboat channels. You two are the best. You did the right choice from the start. No new couch ! Upgrading UMA one step at the time. I look at say Ruth and her Garret of Salt & Tar. They've been working (their as...of) on their (real) old style wooden boat for the last 5, yes, five years ! and now, well, it floats. Traveling ? Oh gosh, not before 2 years at least ! Same with "Learning the lines", dreamers to be polite. Sold their boat, quite similar to Uma. Traveled ? Nope. Now visiting dream boats they cannot afford. Duh. Acorn to Arabella. Now that's another story. They are utmost Craftsmen. Awesome wood working. 4 years in the making. In their case, the build is THE travel. Now, look at you kids. After months, not years, of hard work and innovations (on the go) on an old, cheap ship anybody else would'nt touch, fix it you DO travel and learn on the way. From south Atlantic islands and South America countries to crossing North Atlantic in rough seas, sometimes scared to death, but you kept on going fearlessly. (My late father sailed those same terrible waters when in a WW2 flat bottom Corvette, escorting fleets of precious life saving cargo to England and Ireland for the D Day debarqment to save our world from nazies. My hero Dad. ) And now, you meet some - no, many - new friends around the world. You two are now celebrities ! But so far, you are still true to yourself, true to your goals of traveling, learn and encounter new cultures and languages. Thus fulfilling the dreams of so many people, you know. I truly love you two kids and always hope for the best and safe sailing. Like for most of your followers, you bring me fresh air and confidence for better days to come. Crippled from constant pain from my legs and old back, I thank you to show me your awesome adventures. ❤️ PS I love your hair in the wind, Kika. 😘 Marc, Varennes, Québec, Canada

I have always been fond of you two. From day one. Like a big brother watching you do things that many sailors gave you shit for. Like when you both decided you were going to make your own electric engine. I watched you both be brave and not listen to the negative comments. I have watched your journey learning and being better than you were the day before. I watched your confidence grow. I have watched you (from multiple YT accounts I have) be more than kind and always nice enough to answer questions. I watched prior video last week and was so happy that you both are so aware of your surroundings that you thought of local rescue groups to donate to. My heart just melted a little bit. Just one more thing proving what kind of people you both are. I couldn't stop talking to Annette about how proud of I was of you both. Then this episode. You expose how that local organization operates and how they are essentially not funded. Which you may not know this, but us public safety types LOVE to VISIT other stations. So thank you for sharing that insight. So many times, even in the US many first responding agencies are not funded at all. They have to hold pancake breakfast and crab feeds just to get money for equipment. Many men and women volunteer their lives and time to aid others in their time of need. As a Marine Veteran. As a retired firefighter paramedic. The actions you both took donating your own money hit me so deep. I actually shed a tear. Thank you so much for your selfless acts.

A little reminder to keep the stop cord attached to yourself when driving the dingy (2:40 and onwards). Not much point to it if you don't. I have personally seen the horrors that can result in the pilot being thrown overboard and the RIB attaining "free will". I have almost been killed myself by a loose RIB (I was in a Laser regatta once when one of the coach RIBs threw the driwer overboard after hitting a wave, it kept going in big circles full tilt for a long time until somebody managed to ram it so it flipped over, really scary stuff).

Sorry to disappoint. We left Bergen a week or so ago. We don't often get the time to read every comment, post, email, message, text, tag, or thread we receive every day. Try not to take it personally, there simply aren't enough hours in the day to get through them all, and film, and edit, and route plan, and cook, and provision, and sail, and go on adventures, and run a small business, and manage to post new content. It's just the two of us running everything. We don't have someone editing our videos, or building our website, managing sales, feeding us content idea, fixing our boat for us. And we would like to keep it that way. So, if you'd like to be more involved, see where we are and what we're up to currently, feel free to join The Uma Nation, and/or sign up to The Uma Vault, where we post more up-to-date information. Otherwise, please enjoy the content we post here and on Instagram for free. Jon's offer was generous and appreciated, but no need to get snarky.

But i'm equally impressed by Kika's editing. It's Fabulous. And I've viewed a lot of other stuff on sailing & others. U guys shoot a bunch of video & then Kika gets it. She does in her editing something that can't b taught. It's a natural talent (Like Spielberg & Lucas have). No bull. The camera likes both of u so that's a good start but then Kika takes it & only picks the stuff that she decides will tell a good story. Just genius. Thx & Happy Trails.

In the UK they were invited aboard a British warship for an overnight trip. In the Netherlands they are invited for a cruise aboard a KNRM rescue boat. Without getting kumbaya it strikes me how their open nature, real interest in others and generosity open doors for them, and we get to be there when they walk through.

Interesting non use of the kill cord! And en-route to a lifesaving rescue centre😳

Please can everyone use their kill cord. It is a simple piece of kit, and yet not using it can put yourself and also your potential rescuers at huge risk not only when dragging you out of the water - but also when stopping the craft before it hurts anyone else. If you have any doubt please look up Kill Cord videos on this very website.

Great organisation, no problems with the English language there 🤟, good international Dutch - well done for profiling them; so reassuring to have them in the background for the sailing community 👌👍👍
