I know a lot of new people have found this video, if you want daily foal updates I spam my instagram @lily.equestrian because I am obsessed with her!🙈 Dakota is my first homebred, I was very emotional and a bit stressed, Crystal means the absolute world to me she has been with me since I was 11 years old and has done so much for me- she truly is everything to me! I was just very worried about her welfare yet also overjoyed that we had a baby from her. I always wished for one from her so that one day when she’s no longer with us i’ll have a piece of her left behind ❤️

same thing happened to us! got told our mare wasnt pregnant (bred by us, our stud, etc) and we got her scanned and she was clear. We just did a bit more driving and turned her out in a huge field, and that was it. She was so good, doing well etc, until we got her in one day. She was HUGE. Like, not just round, low too. I was stroking her belly too and she was pulling a 'face' which isnt like her !! Vet came out day after, and now we have a stunning little grey roan colt 🙈 hes so cute, and just vv good!! so happy for you!!

@@Leah_loves_horses we never scanned my mare because we thought she was but then we just forgot about it bc she ended up settling down a bit and then all the biting started up again when am we put on the Girth and saddle so we got the vet to look at her and he said it’s probably her being moody he didn’t even think she was in foal

We bought a mare years ago. Told emphatically not in foal to an expensive imported stallion. We rode her right up until birth. Named her Surprise, as this was such a huge surprise. An amazing horse she was too. A wonderful life ahead, I think, for your Dakota 😁

I had this happen haha - Both my vet and the previous owner's vet missed the pregnancy when I purchased my Missouri Fox Trotter mare. Previous owner's vet even claimed the mare would never foal again, due to internal "scar tissue." Had myself a fancy MFT colt about six months later - oops. LOL. It was fun at least.

We had kinda the same going on. Was looking for a rideable pony back in the time. Found one, a stunning 4 year old mare. But she was in bad shape, not on good food and also had an infection going on. We decided to take the change and buy her. Let her get checked by the vet. On a certain moment he was like: 'is she pregnant?'' We all didn't think so, but he is the vet and checked for it. She had a very big foal in her. She was close to her due date. not even 1 month later she foaled a beautiful little guy, all went fine, grew up to be a cool jumping horse. We found out who the dad was. A little welsh stallion who they decided to make it a gelding as he didn't make any foals. Sike

Congratulations on the foal! Such a beautiful little one. And Crystal still does not look like she gave birth, she is so thin (for someone who was just pregnant). Don't feel bad. Friends of us bought their first horse from a breeder, because the mare would not take. To cut a long story short: Three month later they had a little foal next to the mare. It happens, it happens to experienced people.

Something similar happened to my friend at my riding stables. The vet came to the stable and he was like "Do you know that your horse (Jessie) is pregnant?" Everyone was like "ummm, No", vet was like "well yeah, She's foaling". Then maybe about 2 or 3 months later Jessie had her foal. (Named the foal Midnight Rose, a PURE Black horse with white starish blaze and 1 white sock) Jessie runs off alot and there are wild horses in the area so it's probably a stallion from a heard.

Mares normally still look plump after foaling but Crystal looks totally normal.so I can see what you mean. What a nice little one. It happens. My neighbor across the street had what she was told by the vet was a hay bound mare. They also had a young gelding in the pasture..well he wasn't entirely as she one morning surprised us all with a lovely little paint colt.

My friend had a mare given to her from the field so we all thought she was extremely fat from being turned away for so long and the owners never said she had been turned out with stallions or been put in foal. We went showjumping one Friday night, and got a phone call from our neighbour saying did we know we had a foal in the field? 😂 summer gave birth with a rug and leg straps on, all on her own! But showed no signs of being in foal, no wax or milk only the fact she was massive!

Wow! Getting the healthy baby you always wanted without any of the lead up stress, how amazing! Can't think of any negatives. Mum and baby look great. Wonder if she'd been in heavy work Mama would have told her rider to take a hike? And that would have provoked questions. Instead it looks like her gentle regime has kept her fit. Apparently she is sneaky, she was really good at keeping her secret! She was well cared for and in good condition, pregnant mares do quiet well being ridden. No more tears just enjoy your sweet surprise! Best surprise ever!

Congrats on the beautiful filly! I had this happen to me, too, with my second horse...though the vet DID catch it before Horse was born. Candy, my mare, was 300lbs under weight when I bought her for $600 from a family who had decided to send her up for slaughter. Their reason being was she was "too old" to breed any more at 10 years old. They'd bred her to a registered Arabian and said the vet had told them she wasn't pregnant and was probably, as I said, too old. About four months later, after I'd been out for a trail ride, she colicked on me, and I couldn't get the symptoms to abate, even with the help of a much older and far more experienced-with-horses neighbor. Bear in mind, I was only 14 at the time, so I was in a state of complete panic. He, too, tried everything he could to get her to recover and none of his knowledge seemed to help. The vet was called, and it was our own vet who informed us that she was pregnant. I should also add that the previous owners came back and tried several times to force us first to return the mare AND foal. Then they tried to force us to return the foal when she was weaned. THEN they tried to press charges and say I, a 15 year old who couldn't even drive a car legally, had driven my dad's truck (and we didn't own a horse trailer but they left that bit out) and stolen the mare and foal from their farm. Eventually my parents had to threaten them with legal action and, finally, they left us alone.
