I agree, you only have to look at Tally Ho which must be nearly a 100% replacement of the hull structure, planking, deck etc. It is still Tally Ho and not, IMO, a replica.

I remember Leo on Tally Ho's restoration covering the subject of restoration or replica. His view was that as long as what you are looking at resembles the original boat then its a restoration. If you think about the life of a wooden boat then as parts break or rot then they are replaced so a minor repair might only replace a plank or a frame but a major refit could replace 30% or 40% of the planking and how many major refits has southern Queen had over her life time and how much of the planking that's there now is original. I suspect none.

It's absolutely a restoration. Even if you had to replace all the structural parts it's still a restoration. A restoration is a process you go through to bring something back to its former glory. It also takes into account the materials and techniques used to make the boat also paying homage to the changes during its life. It's also another part of its story. Awesome project.

It all depends on how bad the boat is. They will probably try and restore/repair as much as they can replacing what can't be repaired. More importantly they are keeping the history and story alive. So does it actually matter what they call it. Probably not. So all down to opinion/choice.

Leo of the Sampson Boat Company have almost completed the "rebuilding" of an Atkins designed yacht over 100 years old. Ive watched from the beginning and much less than 5% of the original is incorporated in the rebuild. If you have 70% good grown oak frames, you are very lucky. A great, well worthwhile project. Hello from Cleveland, Ohio. Since you are not starting from scratch like from plans, this is a restoration and it's even better that you have at least 70% of the original boat that's usable. I do have an idea. Dry out the old wood that's not gonna be used on the boat and for those who donate, laser print there name and a picture of the boat on an old piece of wood and send it to the patrons. ($100 minimum I say is good.) Looking forward to the restoration. On with the show chaps...

The important thing about restoring a boat is using as much of the old lumber and planking as possible it may mean using it else were on the boat but as long as it placed back into the boat . If say you have a rib and the lower part of that rib is rotten but the upper half is still solid that you just replace what is needed to make that rib hole again no matter what that is better than just replacing the hole rib . That is the differace between restoring and just replacement of what's there.

A soft fading cry from Southern Queen was heard. The heart and soul of all those that were touched by her and were are a part of her thru her service were asking for assistance. Another great video Dom, I see it this way, since she is a wooden boat and part of a wooden boat's life is having timber replaced as needed it is 100% a restoration when 70% of the frame is viable, especially taking into account the time she sat unmaintained. If she had no viable frame left then it would be a replica but that is not such a bad thing you see from my point of view a replica faithfully constructed is as valuable as the historic beauty it replaces

Ive studied to be an art restorer (antiques). i left that field a couple of years after i finished my degree (no money in it). but i remember the difference between a copy and a replica. a replica would be a more accurate copy in as much one replicates all caracteristics, weight being also one of them. Now, the fruition of Art, and boats are Art as much as they are a product of Science (evolution thru millenia of observation) (look no further than a bristol/scillonian pilot cutter as one of the epitomes of naval design evolution) is different from the fruition of a sculpture, paint, or what have you. In the end we are preserving 2 zeitgeists: one about the "happening" of Dunkirk, the other about the physical object: the boat itself. Yes , there will be a time in the future when all the pieces on that specific boat will no longer be the ones present at Dunkirk, but their spirit remain. Im a fairly crazy person myself, thus i think objects talk to one another so do the pieces that make them, thats how the spirit of things gets thru Time. And when pieces cant talk to directly to one another directly they use us as messengers. This is why we restore and keep things Alive.

Rebuild is the term I use. That means replace what needs to be replaced, keep and preserve what is still usable. It is part of the life of a wooden boat to have parts replaced over time. But, what is important is that the spirit of the original boat is retained.

I think I might have been one of the first to ask the refurb/replica question on KZbin. The answer I got, that it’s about the keel timber, made me try to put numbers on it and I think the numbers you gave, would make it for me a “refurbishment”. 80% of the original timber is a good amount to say it’s “original”. Good luck with it all and I look forward to more info on it. 👍💪

So yes it is the same boat - this has actually already been to court on several ocasions - it's absolutely a restoration, there's more to a boat than its planking or its structure - it's an entitiy in itself. If you think about the amount of yachts sailing around the world with pretty much everything replaced on them it's not really that different. To to mention the famous long lasting hammer that had had several new heads and handles over the years :-)!

I would consider that the keel is the intrinsic component that constitutes the fundamental element of a boat. Provided that you're working with the original keel intact, you are working on the original boat. Every other detail of the vessel will through time be replaced, time is the only factor. Every plank, section of the transom, even the stem, is likely to be replaced as a matter of maintenance over the life of the boat, nobody would be counting replaced planks over a 50-year period and one day claiming that it was no longer the original vessel. Utilising the original keel will ensure that, ribs, stringers and deck are all complying with the original design. It will remain the original boat. In my opinion.

When Michael took her on she had already been rebuilt a couple of times, She started clinker. then was doubled carvel, then totally replanted with many new frames. I'm not sure on the percentage, but in restoring old/vintage/collectable cars, as long as the chassis and engine are matching numbers from factory, most everything else can be replaced and it would still be classed as Original. 70% of the skeleton/chassis original and most else being replaced 'like-for-like' would stay well in the "Restoration" zone. Definitely restoration, imo. The bare structure of the boat is reasonably intact (70%) which is quite impressive for such an old boat that has worked hard most of her life. The skin is less important. Call me fussy, or a PitA, if you want but the 30% oak that you will need to source should ideally come from the UK or Ireland - perhaps Northern France, for strength and quality reasons. It is very much more expensive, though, than American oak or Spanish oak ... Cadoha's issues sound concerning and serious, "months of work" I think you said or hinted at: I hope it can be resolved at reasonable cost to you ...

Because of the age and condition of the Southern Queen, my recommendation is to build a replica of the boat and incorporate some of the original timbers, etc. where practical and time saving for the rebuild. I would think that because of the amount of deterioration of the boat that trying to rebuild it from the original remains would be more continuous and costly because of the present condition and age. Just my humble opinion.

I’ve worked on and flown aircraft from the era of Southern Queen. On aeroplanes I’ve seen as little as a maker’s data plate be the only original part in the whole aircraft (one original data plate was valued at £500k the rebuilt aircraft sold for £7.5m) personally, one original part is enough to keep it as a restoration.

This is the Question, when History meets reality?! Is the History Greater than the Reality? Or is the Reality Greater than the History? In this case I believe the History is the winner on this boat. You 70 % of the Heart or Bones of the Boat. So it is worth saving. As far as the planks of the Boat that is something that would have ben repaired or replaced in time anyway. So in my opinion I would save the Boat for History. Because once she is gone you can't get it back. Thank You for this video and giving us a chance to put our opinions out there. I my experience the hull planking below the waterline can be regarded as a consumable, constantly being replaced or repaired so if 80% of the entire hull need replacing, then maybe 50% of that is below the waterline then only 30% of the planking might be counted in as the total %age of restoration. The same goes for ground tackle, rigging and the sails of a yacht

Here's my idea: 1. build a second frame which is a perfect replica of that of the original boat 2. remove whatever softwood that needs to be replaced, and replace it with fresh wood 3. take the old softwood, and attach it to the replica frame in the end, you will have two vessels that are half-original, although only the restored original will be more seaworthy

Ultimately there is no definative answer to the question of where it stops being original and becomes a replica. Usually known as the 'Triggers broom' question, it affects the preservation of anything, from a steam engine to an antique chair to a house or even a boat. Personally, I prefer to see it as an ongoing part of the items history rather than thinking that its history stopped at a specific moment in time. However, everyone will have their own personal view, some of which will be positive and sadly some wont. That's life.

First, it is absolutely a restoration, the boat is substantially intact and you’re replacing the bits that are missing or in poor shape. Second re the ongoing project, nothing is ever much valued unless it has a contemporary commercial value. So the great trick with old things from the past that we want to preserve is to make sure they have a commercial value in this day and age so they continue to be valued without the constant drain of applying for government funding, which always ends. By putting her to work, you provide the commercial value, which will allow her ongoing preservation. And of course, nothing falls to bits quicker than an unused boat!

Even HMS Victory has very little of the original material left within the current structure. As for the cash for the project, could it be lottery funded ?

It’s immaterial, a wooden boat is a organic entity and wooden boats are by there very construction biodegradable and circular. They are also infinitely repairable and thus it’s not uncommon for any wooden boat to rebuilt several time through its life. So the answer is…………… if it looks like the original, is made in the same way and has one gram of historic DNA, then it’s the same wooden boat! ❤

i think this question about how much of something can still be original before it becomes a replica of the original, is a question that appear quite often in other categories in the restoration field, especially in restoration projects of things like Steam locomotives, but i think the answers are the same. no matter how much of it you replace, doesn't mean that it's no longer what it was, it just means that it's continuing to go through it's natural life, eventually everything you restore given enough time is going to have nothing left of it's original self, that's an unavoidable fact. a good example of this is here across the pond in the U.S.A in my state one of the most famous Frigates from early American history, the U.S.S. Constitution affectionately know as "old Ironsides" calls the city of Boston, Ma it's home port. at 226 years old is is the oldest ship in the world still afloat, and furthermore still capable of sailing under her own sail, and still listed as Active on the U.S. Naval Fleet registry, crewed and served upon by naval officers and crews daily, and receives repairs from the same dry dock in which she was constructed in back in 1797. but today in 2023 only roughly 10-15% of the vessel is of original construction. despite this to the people of this great state and this great country, she remain a Symbol of freedom to the American people and a Stalwart defender of the country in it's infancy. i think the short way to sum up such a long statement would be best said as "just because nothing original remains doesn't mean it's not that thing anymore, it only stops being that thing when it means nothing to the people who see it, something only truly dies when it is forgotten by all."

To my mind it’s a restoration but either way it’s keeping the memories alive and respecting our nations great history.

It's always got to be a restoration in my mind! Do you know you have the original boat as it was built? If it was maintained in the past when it was in use, potentially some of planking may already have been replaced and perhaps the odd frame here and there or perhaps at some point it may have been damaged and needed broken frames replaced and also some planks, so is what you have the original boat as the first shipwright made it. Alternatively if you replace 70% of the frames at this stage and leave 30% original, at some point in the future the 30% will need to be replaced, would it then become a replica. Or if you reuse only 20% of the planks now, again at some point that 20% will need to be replaced, that is the nature of a traditional wooden boat. They are not throw away items, they can be maintained, if the boat had been properly maintained for the last 100 years then it would almost certainly have had many if not most parts replaced in the last 100 years just slowly, would that make it a replica? No, I don't think so myself. A replica of a wooden boat would be to start from original plans or measurements and even if you did that at some point in the future that replica would not contain any parts of the original new parts of the replica boat that you built, as those planks and frames would have to be changed at some point in the future. And if a traditional wooden boat without the use of modern epoxies and adhesives is always being maintained and continuously changing parts does it matter, if it is a restoration or a replica, if the story and history of the original boat remains. On many old boats parts are changed even names change it does not change the history, just because the name plate has been changed it is keeping the story/history alive that is the soul of the original boat. Great channel keep it going, Guys

It's a restoration! Because wood rots! Wood needs to constantly be replaced! You can go way beyond 50% and it's still a restoration! Oh but the bell, definitely save the bell!

Now that Matt and Amy of sailing Florence are finishing their Carribean adventure. I think it is time that the Cadoha crew set sail for the West Indies and apply your dulcet David Attenborough tones to the channel. No 1 new adventure. No 2 it is perfect for you both and the Hank lad. Have a think about it.

Hey peeps. In my thoughts as the ship or boat is in a condition of almost being named a (wreck) but a wreck with a historic story perhaps all vessels of age having been kept alive as it were are no longer in their original state or used in the specific manner the original design intended for the particular vessel. I would lean towards keeping the history of the vessel alive for future generations, yes it’s a now new boat in its restored condition. The true romance is the vessel itself. No matter what you replace it is still the same vessel. Romantic and poised to live on.

Ah, The Ship of Thesus paradox. To my mind staying faithful to the original ship's design and recycling its usable material makes it a restoration and not a replica.

Restoring old wooden boats … my view is that all wooden boats have to have parts replaced over there lifetime , planks, ribs, equipment etc . The older it gets the more of the original gets replaced. Major refits just replace more over a short time . The “soul” of the boat remains the same . So 70% or 7 % it’s still the same boat☺️ . Check out tally Ho project - Leo has an episode that discusses the issue . Plus his restoration work is great if u like woodwork . Maybe see u along coast ( we’re currently trying to get away too (from Plymouth) . Hope Cadoha issues not too serious , soggy deck ?

Restoration/replica/or….? These terms are well defined in the historic aircraft world. I’m involved in work on an aircraft where there are no complete surviving examples. We have a lot of original material from crash sites. We also have the original drawings and material specs. Our aim is to to achieve a complete example, using as much original material as possible and where new material is incorporated, it is to the original spec and identified as new. After a lot of discussion, it’s described as a rebuild. A replica contains little or no original material and may not be entirely true to the original design. A restoration will not necessarily result in a complete or serviceable project - it will concentrate on conservation, preservation and restoration of original material. A project which includes both restoration of original materials and incorporation of new material to original specs is best described as a rebuild. Maybe that description would work for Southern Belle. Wish you luck with the project and your new season.

For me it's simple: if you are repairing the original boat and a goodly chunk of the original frames are intact, and it's a question of replacing rotten content on the original timbers, that qualifies as a restoration. If however you are building a new one from scratch based just on the dimensions etc of the original but with no original content, that's a replica. Yaba is a restoration. Not a replica. In IP terms 25% of the original hull would be a good start. For me, Triggers Broom applies:- Think Men of War in the Napoleonic period. They were often massively refitted and replaced much of the hull but were still considered the real McCoy. Jmho
