This song was inspired by a conversation Mr. Joel had at the end of the 80s, in which the other guy (who was 21 years old), said it was a terrible time to be 21. When Joel said age 21 was no picnic for him either, the other guy was like "yeah yeah, but it's different for you; you grew up in the 50s! The world just sucks these days!" So Joel went home and wrote this song to say "what, you think this is _new?"_

Yeah, Billy is baby boomer. His generation experienced things later generations can only gleam from books, tv, movies, pop culture. My Mother was baby boomer. She had similar experiences. Billy was talking with his heart with this song.

Imo he's just pointing out every generation blames the one before ...but they didn't lite it but they're trying to fight it. Your boy was on point. Its one we learned all the words which wasn't easy in the 80s Lolololol btw you're focus face is adorable. (if a bit scary lolol) and all of his songs are amazing imo

I LOVE Billy Joel's music, I am so glad you checked this out! From what I remember, this song mentions everything that happened during Billy's lifetime up to that point. I think he wrote this when he turned forty years old (if I am remembering this right. This came out while I was in High School and my memory is not the best anymore). You did pretty good with your synopsis. I am glad you could appreciate this. It does get people interested in history. No, Billy's songs are not always socially conscious like this was. He normally goes for funny or ironic. Yes, he did Piano Man, that's one of his most iconic pieces! I am glad that got mentioned! :) Billy has done LOTS of stuff in music and he also gives to charity, a real cool guy. For something from his sort-of 'weird side', try 'River Of Dreams' (still good, even if it is a little weird). For something more 'fun', try 'Uptown Girl' and 'For The Longest Time' (there are 2 versions of FTLT, one is a cappella!). After that, I am sure that whatever you feel like listening to on his channel will be great (and I bet Billy himself would appreciate the people are still finding his music to be interesting). There is another band that does history lessons like this with ALL of their songs. That band is a Swedish Metal band called Sabaton. They have always done AMAZING stuff and there is a sister channel to their main YT channel. Their main channel has their music videos and the other one is Sabaton History Channel where they go deeper into the actual story behind the songs. ALL of it is AWESOME and I really hope you get a kick out of watching all of it (whether you do reaction videos for them or not). Have fun! :)

@@CC2Cents_ OH! I almost forgot to mention to you: Billy was married to supermodel Christie Brinkley for somewhere around nine years and they share a daughter. They met while shooting the music video for Uptown Girl. Christie has always been a real beauty. Just thought you might want to check that one out first. Of course it's up to you, it's your channel. :)

Cece, You'll love Billy's "Piano Man", "Just The Way You Are", "All About Soul", and "Scenes From An Italian Restaurant". Bangers and ballads, Billy is one of our great singer/songwriters/piano players! This song is the basis for a great history lesson, but not representative of his body of work.

I read somewhere that an ancient tablet was discovered in Mesopotamia. Whoever wrote it was complaining that in his time everyone was writing stories and that the youth didn't respect their elders anymore. Essentially he was saying that the world was going to hell in a handbag and that it was better when he was young! Things really don't change much! Check out Billy Joel's - Only The Good Die Young.

He is using the events of his lifetime to show how history can repeat itself. The song spans from roughly the ‘50s to 1990. It’s an attempt to reconcile the generations to move forward to “put out the fire“ and to change the things that one generation may blame another for, but were actually always here and always happen. It’s a call to change. That’s what he said in an interview I watched when this song came out years ago, I was still a kid in school. I didn’t get it at the time, but now at 45 years old I feel that. That sentiment hits different.

The song came about when Billy Joel was talking with Sean Lennon (John Lennon's son) and Sean was complaining about how bad things were in 1989. So, he wrote the song to say that the world has always been bad. We didn't start it but in our own way we fight it everyday. We live in a broken world. People who love Fascism and Communism don't know history.

Y'all nailed it. It's a jarring call-back to our history and the history of the world (even if you were there). He has one called " We'll All Go Down Together" - a salute to all the soldiers who came back from Vietnam (and those who didn't). He was actually quite vocal about some of the social issues of his time (not exclusively) but when he penned these kinds of pieces, he was good at it. Thanks for posting this one.

China under Marshal Law portrays the Tianamen Square Massacre, when Communist China began its Total Crackdown on any kind of resistance. If you have not seen the video of a lone man standing up to a group of Tanks standing in front of them, begging them to stop and back the Freedom Take over of the square, and then moving left and right when the tank tries to drive around him, and then climbs on the Tank, it is the most Heartfelt attempt to take "on the man" of my generation, knowing he could be run over or shot down at any moment

If you don't know the historic references it can be confusing. It's generational. If your born after Gen X it will difficult to get the many of the references in the video. Even Gen X will have a few gaps in historic knowledge in regards to references in video. Millennials and later generations will have greater gaps in historic knowledge.

We all have those singers or musicians that we really don't like, Billy Joel is one of mine. I'm very familiar with a whole lot of his songs, but they don't click with me. This song pulls at events to create interest in it in my opinion. Bruce Springsteen is another singer that I really don't care for. I enjoyed your reaction though, you always pay attention to the songs, and actually put some effort into trying to understand them which is unusual for the mainstream reactor. Take care and stay safe.

Okay, you may have a point. But he was suddenly under pressure to get a record out. Hooray for having no choice but to work under a record label back in those days... I think his earliest music was better because he was writing in his head for years before anything got produced. Signing with a label, they demand at least a record's worth of content within a matter of months. :P
