The 80s were a pop culture goldmine. It is no coincidence that so many people love it even among those who were born well after the 80s.

I was a teenager in the 80's and hated most of the 80's music. In my opinion, there were countless "artists" for whom their outfit and blow-dried hairdo in their video were much more important than their music and who hid musically behind walls of reverb, computer sounds and synthesizers. Fortunately there were also a few exceptions like the Police, Dire Straits and Queen. Great stuff.
@80s_kid

@@stefan_becker Yes, there were weaker and stronger works. I also think that for example Queen has more value than one or another 80s pop production, but I was thinking more about the entire era and scene (music, movies etc.) because a huge amount of good songs were created at that time and even for the simpler pop productions, attention was paid to the instrumentation and for the good and memorable choruses and melodies. As for music videos, the 80s is the OG era of music videos, see MTV - in this decade (up to about the mid-90s), a music video was very important from a promotional point of view. It is no coincidence that this can also be called the "MTV era". Hair and visual exaggerations can be funny in retrospect (guys with girly hair:)) but I think it's a matter of taste again.

Many of the music videos were also ranging from short movies to totally hilarious outrageous creations. At a time when MTV actually was Music Television.

@@stefan_becker dear Stefan, you were just an pretentious teen, the 80s were really great. Every era has plenty of shit music, including the 80s. But the 80s also has more quality and innovation than most other decades. And synths are great. Just like pianos and guitars.... and drum computers.

Very impressive, first time here, yo knew a lot of the songs. You definitely have to listen to Peter Gabriel’s “sledge hammer” and some Pet shop boys. You kinda looked like a big question mark when they came up. Especially Pet shop Boys had many big hits in the eighties. Not that Gabriel was a slouch he had big solo hits and a duet with Kate Bush and was the lead singer in genesis prior to Phil collins.

I was born in 1963 but I have come to the conclusion that the 90s were the best music decade. I've come to have more appreciation of the 80s, but it's easy to look back with rose colored glasses and forget the horrible disco and a lot of synth pop after it became trendy and bland, way too much emphasis on hair spray and eye liner, etc... Suddenly almost every guitarist was playing a PRS and plugging directly into the console with these thin, wimpy guitar tones. There was some good experimentation in the New Wave stuff, and the good synth pop stuff. The Cars, the Police, Elvis Costello, Prince, and folks like that were doing good stuff. And of course there's always stuff that is completely disconnected from its era, like U2's Joshua Tree and Meat Load's Bat out of Hell.

@@deanroddey2881 I lived both eras and 90s were great until 98, after that it went downhill pretty quickly. I get what you complain about the 80s being over the top, but come on, the music was insanely amazing. My favorite era is 60s with The Beatles and british bands, the US bands and Woosdstock, so legendary, but a lot of people consider the 70s the era of real music, with Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, ACDC, Black Sabbath, ABBA and Fleetwood Mac were incredible. PD: I never ever understood the disco hate.

I cannot even begin to express in words how much I miss the 80's. It was the best possible time in all of human history to be a teenager. The music, the colors, the fashion, the optimism. @@Blackadder75 Every time in human history has a dark side. But in the 80's we were well aware of it, but we also felt that we could solve the problems. It was a time of optimism. It was the polar opposite of today where we know we have problems, but then actively seek to create more and solve none of them. If I had a choice between the problems of the 80's and the problems of today, I would without hesitation choose the 80's.

Tbf 83-84 was a hell of a time. To me it had the most bangers out of any of the other years with the songs that were in this video. 80’s in general had many bangers but 83-84 especially. But yea if that’s the case Jump probably should’ve been the most been the most popular for either February or March. Considering girls just want to have fun is March I would say it should be in February and replace Karma Chameleon cause girls just want to have fun is just too iconic. Then again it was technically made before the 80’s and wasn’t written by Lauper (but idk if we would count that).

I'm a teenager of the 80s, and I think I'm like anyone else who grew up in that time... You just took it all for granted, thinking great, new music coming out every month on the radio or the soundtracks in the movies, and endless new releases of albums or tapes to collect, was all just a normal thing, and you thought it would go on forever at that same high level and we could be hearing iconic music into 90's and 2000's and beyond. We never knew the time we were living in was to be a golden era of rock: the 80s combined with 70s and 60s too. Sure there's been GREAT music out in the decades since, I'm not trying to be totally bias, but it just doesn't have such depth and such dynamic range of sounds, and the wide difference between artists breaking new ground today as it did back then. They were on hyper-drive back then, creating such new sounds and beat and rhythms. I'm glad we have it all recorded to be enjoyed for the generations to come. And again, I'm not bias just for my own generation's of music. I liked some of my parent's music too of the 40s and 50s .. some great stuff. But yeah.. nothing beats the 70s and 80s. I think many agree. I hope a new golden age is ahead.. maybe ?

I didn't expect my body to have an internal physical reaction to some of these songs.

1983-1985: so many killing hits on the radio. What a creative explosion. Pity it wasn't a particularly happy period of my life. But the good music helped me get through it all. Thank you all artists for sharing your passion and talent with us all.

I was born January 80. This whole montage was a strong trip down memory lane. A lot of the 1985 songs brought back kindergarten memories strangely enough. And, I was fairly certain there’d be a Rick Roll!

Great video 👍 Nice compilation of music like the face you pull when you come across a song that you don't like or not getting is priceless.

Great idea for a video! I was between the ages of 15-25 in the eighties and I am genuinely impressed with your knowledge of the songs that meant so much to me!

I was born in the 70s and grew up in the 80s. Man so many great songs, there were a few I have never heard of though. But what a great catalog though.

“Even when I’m older” - Yep I’m older now 😂 they’re still good. Yep they’ll be good when you’re old too! You definitely knew most of the list!

I was born in 1970. All the 60s songs were still regularly played on the radio (and a lot of 50s too) well into the late 70s. I was in junior and senior high during the 80s.

Would have thought Huey Lewis and the News with all their number 1s would have been on here a lot more.

Verdy you did quite well. This was the decade I grew up on music. I graduated highschool in 83 and college in 87. This was basically Billboard #1 lots of pop music not much in the way of bands I listened to like U2, Bruce Springsteen, R.E.M Van Halen and Guns &Roses just to name a few. Verdy you're right about music of today having staying power 30 years from now. The only band of this century I probably still be listening to in the future is Green Day and most of their best stuff is from the 90's. Still I love your channel and how you react to entire albums

I was lucky to be young and alive in the 1980’s. I wonder if there will ever be another decade like it.
