Hey guys we need to just to fix one wrong information we said on the video and also address a few concerns you guys mentioned. - We are not doing the installation ourselves. We hire an engineer that is and authorized dealer and installer for Yanmar engines. - The area of a 2.1/4" hose plus the area of a 1" hose is not the same as the area of a 3" hose. It is smaller. But it was suggested by the engineer that assures it is big enough and he is the guy that will sign the technical delivery of the engine so we make sure we have our 2 years warranty. - About insulating the stainless steel connections we talked to him and he said it is okay as it is cooled down before entering the exhausting hose. If it was a turbo engine it would be different. And also even though it looks like the metal is touching the wood, it is not. And where metal touches metal we will add protection in between. But to make sure about it we will talk to him again. - About the exhausting fumes coming back through the bilge pump: we will have a one way valve, but just in case we will add an alarm on the bilge and run some tests, if we have any problem we will take the bilge pump from that through hole and send it to another true hole.

One suggestion. Label all your wires at both ends, AND when it passes through a bulkhead. That way you will later be able to identify the wires if you ever need to in the future. A small and time consuming exercise at first, but if you ever have a problem thousands of miles away with electrical, it will greatly help in trouble shooting. The labels should be with permanent marker, and not easily removable. Cheers from Winnipeg.

The cross sectional area of the 3" pipe is 7.07 square inches. The cross sectional area of the 2 1/4 inch pipe combined with the 1 inch pipe is only 4.77 square inches. That's a 33% reduction in total size. If Yanmar is requiring a 3 inch exhaust to keep your warranty, then you still might have an issue.
@aldo95353 жыл бұрын
The important thing is the Yanmar engineer has approved it so it falls on their lap. Like others have said, I expect the engine would have worked perfectly well on the original 2 1/4" just had a bit more back pressure (which it should be able to cope with anyway).
@david60543 жыл бұрын
@@aldo9535 Yeah for a 4cyl NA making about 45HP a 3" is just overkill. In fact if you look at the exhaust on the engine, you see it that only the end is 3" but from there to the engine it is smaller so the bottleneck is on the engine side. But then again depending on the boat it has to run for a longer more complicated path so that might be why they made it wider. And if you are doing a engine swap it is always smart to replace the exchaust, don't want a leaky exchaust inside the cabin, might as wel do it right.
@WilliamPozo3 жыл бұрын
Yeah. Agreed. I did the area calc before realizing that someone did it. The area is not enough........ Hopefully the yanmar has a min/max.... Good progress though!
@povlrueger38983 жыл бұрын
I also commented on this. Lol. I also understand 3" for a 54hp motor seems like overkill, but I believe the exhaust will also need to carry cooling water so that takes up some of the area. Maybe not though, I'm just a dummy.

The valve is unlikely air tight and even less likely to be pressure resistant. Even if it is, carbon will soon enough ensure it is not 100% sealed. Please monitor the other bilge end over time to ensure gases are not making way into boat.

Also, a 2.25 inch outlet plus one inch outlet combined is far less capacity than a single 3 inch exhaust . You need to compare the surface area of the circle . A 3 inch circle is 7 sq inches, and a 2.25 plus 1 inch circles if only 4.8 sq inches , so you are creating back pressure .

23:57 - Though Duca calls the exhaust system an "exhausting system" he's kind of right, it's an exhausting exhaust system. Great work guys, so fun to see you both so positive as you work through the challenges and find the right solution, solution, solution!

Normally I would say please don't start ripping stuff out, but you two do seem to have a clue what is needed or not, but I would have just made the holes for the path of the exhaust an inch bigger chain drilling like you did with the ply.

Looks like you have the “solution” thought out. Is there anyplace the metal and flex exhaust passes close enough to interior cabin wood that radiant heat could cause combustion, fire to the wood? You both are so determined in all your projects. 👍 I look forward to your travels around the world. I am happy you have a new engine. The installation will be very interesting. Odd Life is worth a lot of money now. I think much more than you have spent getting her sea worthy. Be safe and thank you for sharing. Respects sent from Georgia USA. Soon you will be ⛵️🏝🎉

Hi Duca you have your maths a little wrong a 1inch circle and a 2.25 circle does not add up to a 3.25 circle though relax you should be OK since you need a 3 inch circle. Obviously the whole point of the exhaust system is to allow it to breath out (Exhaust) the waste gases and it is all about the surface area just like if you had to breath out through too small tube. Not an engine mechanic but I also think having too much surface area to exhaust through can also be bad though I think not as much. Anyhow it is all about the surface area so a 3 inch tube has one of Pi X R squared = 7.06858 For a 1 inch that is .7854 and a 2.25 = 3.97608 or a total surface area of 4.76148 a difference of 2.3071 inch square of roughly 2/7ths or 30%. Of course I could do the maths exact but I am too lazy. This is the law of Pizza's and why shops will sell you a special offer of 2 6 inch pizzas for the same price as a 9 inch because the ingredients are actually less. However I did say you should relax because If the engineer has ok'ed it there might be a little more back pressure than ideal but the worst possible outcome is that the engine wont run. More likely you might lose a little power at top revs. Since all your modifications have been to get an extra 1/7th area and of course it is the smallest diameter that counts I would of been tempted to ask the engineer if 2.25 4/7ths of the required area is OK and tried it but a moot point now and If you have to bite the bullet and modify your 2.25 hole then at least the other work has not gone to waste. Well apart from splitting it into 2 pipes. BTW if you have a hand sander and lots of sandpaper you can polish that tank to a mirror finish it will take many hours but look much better than paint. I hope Fred's Dad makes a full recovery and is soon back on his feet and Fred can return to the boatyard.

You are definitely right Glen. It is not the same area. To be honest we talked to a friend the works with marine engine for around 30 years and in his opinion even with 2.1/4 we wouldn’t have a problem. But we decided to add a little bit anyways as this modification was really simple and we could get the approval from the Yanmar representative. But you are definitely right we didn’t get to the area of a 3” hose. And to do that we would need to cut the hull of the boat and it would be a mess that would for sure generate rust in many places of the boat for the next couple years due to the metal dust that is impossible to contain and clean 100%. 😅

I am bit scared of number of connections needed in your new exhaust design, before it was four, and now it's multiple times of that. Exhaust leaks in the boat are deadly. And don't put any other functions in the exhaust port; diesel soot + hot seawater will destroy any check valve very fast.

A 3" exhaust on a 54hp motor sounds like overkill to me. But I'm not an engineer, just some guy who spent a few years building hot rods. I do know what a pain it is to design and build exhaust systems though. Keep up the good work, I can't wait to see you fire it up for the first time.

On the exhaust pipe, why didn't you just use a 3" to 2 1/4" reducer. This would increase back pressure and horse power. BTW, thank you for using Roberta respectfully in your videos. A 3" exhaust pipe on a 50 hp (or so) engine, is completely unnecessary! I've seen 300 hp engines with smaller exhaust pipes than that. Personally, I would have recommended you kept using 2.25" inch, all the way downward from your manifold.

This is a wet exhaust, so most of the volume is occupied by the cooling water. 3" is just about right. I have two boats with a similar setup. 60hp and 3" wet exhaust.
