I think the reason Americans are more optimistic is because we get way more sunlight than the UK. I don't have the chart, but it showed that the least sunny parts of the USA are far sunnier than the sunniest parts of Britain, in terms of hours of sunlight per year.

Its a good point actually, grey skies for months on end can get wearing, the nordic countries are allegedly the happiest places on earth but then again the weather and northerliness there contributes to them also having some of the highest suicide rates, a similar thing happens in the UK but instead everyone is just really cynical about everything instead

True, the environment your in can form your mindset. That why people who are even in poor countries who have lots of sun always are happy and you see them smiling despite being in extreme poverty coz idk the sun just does something to the mental health. That is why seasonal depression can exist where some people report feeling dull gray and depressed when autumn or winter comes or just when the weather ain’t all sunny and colourful and vibrant

Honestly nobody hates America more than Americans and nobody is more patriotic about America than Americans. We can take being roasted because roasts are fun but we will get patriotic and defensive about our country if we feel like we're being looked down on BECAUSE we're American. That being said, when you go across the Country and visit states for a few days you'll immediately realize that not every state is gonna be the same.

This makes me think of a restaurant right down the street from me I was at one time. Way too fancy, especially for the area, like $50 for nothing an app, totally outta place there and two guys had the audacity the WHOLE TIME to be sitting right next to me with nothing better to do than making their whole chat about someone being unable to get off their phone and just enjoy their meal! NOT MAKING OTHER REFERENCES! Acting like they were about to cut stuff off and switch topics when I tossed a look as it was me, it was like 12PM on a Monday and I kept getting calls from my doctor as I had just gotten off of a broken leg in 2019 then it was around the time of the COVID rumors in 2020 and I have immunity and other health issues! I had absolutely zero idea they would be finding the time to call people in the confusion, especially me being in DC! I guess as rehab still wasn't quite over she decided to be even more over the top than she already is in a good way and call me due to how bad my health is piraide

There may not be any classism in the US but I think that's mostly because the US is still brand spanking new and still has that new car smell compared to the "old world" like Europe. In other words, there hasn't been enough time for a class divide to really form and ingrain itself in the culture. So I'd say give it a few hundred more years and see if that's still true. Depending on your *race* however you will feel off and will be treated differently in higher class areas.

@@mabiniss2 : The thing you aren't factoring in is that much of the racism was promoted to _support_ classism in the US- easier to establish the class system if part of it is literally color-coded. And indeed, "aristocracy" is a fairly good description of the cultural aspiration of the South, and at least some of the old Northern established families as well. The trick is that there's a ban on _enshrining it in law,_ and there's also been a fairly large amount of travel, so it's tended to be fragile.

Ahh... classism. Nothing like making fun of people for being poorer than you. Weirdly enough, I thought that would be more prominent in america as I got older. Not really, I'm sure it happens, but it's usually asshole kids. I haven't met an adult that goes "Is that a Nike T-Shirt. HAHA!" that being said, I've never met someone who was born into immense wealth here. Some people I know had wealthier parents, who were lawyers or something. But, they weren't getting like everything spoonfed to them either.

Americans are the biggest critics of America tbh. Wouldn't say we are all happy as well. But when I think of us compared to the UK..... maybe..... I have never heard of a hotel giving toothbrushes anywhere. That's cool. And I have heard many stories of rich folks dressing very casual and probably lazily walk into these big expensive car dealers and get laughed right out. But then they buy from a competitor right across the street.

Airbnbs are terrible for the city itself tho. It turns residential neighborhoods into hotel districts, all the local businesses turn into tourist based ones. That’s why there’s hardly any venetians left actually living in Venice
@absalomdraconis

That's hardly the only reason. History and tourism are better justifications for the city these days than the city itself. The whole place is going to need either a permanent sea wall, or to be jacked up and new foundations installed.
